Is Canada (or the US) becoming authoritarian?
TreeBeard replied to Moonlight Graham's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
You think there might be some signs? You think it matters more if it’s the “leader of the free world” exhibiting these Hitler-esque signs? -

You don’t understand my point? -
It’s not a legitimate gripe. Sounds like Eby may be trying to deflect from what is a provincial responsibility. “Don’t look at me because of our ferry costs! Look over there! It’s the feds!” All I ever hear from Islanders is how expensive housing is. How expensive ferries are. How bad homelessness is. How it’s full there, so don’t come. Do they ever say anything good about their island?

So I’d be correct if I said the US Constitution had freedom of expression as one of its clauses? Of course not. I’d use the proper term, since I’m not retarded. Did any of you pass grade 10 social studies? (Other than being an American. Apparently, you don’t need knowledge about a subject to have really strong opinions about it)

It’s not. It’s freedom of expression. Thats like saying the US constitution includes freedom of expression. It doesn’t. It includes freedom of speech. It may seem semantics, but the differences go beyond merely semantics. So you’re still here with an opinion on a topic of which you’re ignorant about.

You don’t even know where Canadian legal rights come from. You’re not equipped to debate about Canada. Learn something about the country and the rights you are trying to argue against and come back another time. Clearly you can’t be bothered to be informed, but you sure do have an opinion about it regardless!

I would go back much further than that. Turner warned of this when free trade with USA was being debated. https://dominionreview.ca/john-turner-has-been-utterly-vindicated-on-free-trade-with-the-u-s/ Let’s take a look at what John Turner said in 1988, a lot of which resonates today. Having first made the case against a free trade deal in the form rational argumentation, Turner began to realize that Canadians wanted to hear the issue distilled into more fundamental and emotive terms – they wanted to hear how what economic dependence on the U.S. would mean for the country they held dear. He didn’t pull any punches: “I believe that Canadians are not going to vote for Brian Mulroney, a man would be governor of a 51st state. They are going to vote for John Turner, a man who wants to be Prime Minister of Canada“. In the first English language debate of that campaign, Turner delivered a stern rebuke of Mulroney’s support for free trade: “We built a country east and west and north. We built it on an infrastructure that deliberately resisted the continental pressure of the United States. For 120 years we’ve done it. With one signature of a pen, you’ve reversed that, thrown us into the north-south influence of the United States and will reduce us…to a colony of the United States, because when the economic levers go, the political independence is sure to follow ”

Is Poilievre screwing up again?
TreeBeard replied to Barquentine's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
That’s less than half of the increase in the public service during the Trudeau years. The unions will be upset because that’s their role, but everyone knew this would be coming. Carney promised cuts to the public service. That was another election promise Conservatives were whining about being stolen from their platform. -

They didn’t defer to experts. They hoped the experts would give them the answers they sought. When they didn’t confirm their biased opinions, they tossed the results. -

1920s Hitler didn’t start off being late 1930s Hitler either. None. -
Utah Gender Affirming Care Study Released

Because they were hoping it would support their predetermined conclusions. When it doesn’t, just dismiss it. Republicans in Utah won’t care. In fact, the Republicans in Utah are probably glad they don’t listen to experts in this case.
