  1. The Old Testament (often abbreviated OT) is the first division of the Christian biblical canon, which is based primarily upon the 24 books of the Hebrew Bible (or Tanakh), a collection of ancient religious Hebrew writings by the Israelites believed by most Christians and religious Jews to be the sacred Word of God. Strange, when I was a kid the church did not have a Bible that was cut in half.
  2. I can't see the halo over the head of someone like that. Back in the day they'd put one on them but lower it slightly.
  3. I'll admit the gun laws on defending yourself here are a bit patronizing (basically they imply that if you have an intruder in your home call 911 and hide under the bed) but there are exceptions: https://www.ctvnews.ca/mobile/canada/saskatchewan-farmer-not-guilty-in-fatal-shooting-of-indigenous-man-1.3796394
  4. https://gun-shop.ca/product-category/firearms/rifles/page/3/ There are still hundreds of available munitions. If you're a hunter or skeet shooter any one of those can suffice. I've only fired a gun thrice (my uncles six shooter) and I bet I could bag a deer with very little training with most of those.
  5. Honestly I don't see what the big deal is. I've always said that if you need an ak-47 type of gun to defend your home you should start looking for a new neighborhood. Chances are whatever gun you come up with, so will the criminals, if not worse than yours.

  10. Cite? I can't find anything on power outages in Germany. I did find this: https://m.dw.com/en/berlin-blackout-raises-questions-over-germanys-power-grid/a-47730394 Initial investigations suggest that its origins were not nefarious: a Swiss construction firm working on a road bridge had apparently failed to check certain underground plans and cut through a 110,000 volt cable.

  12. Great show. The u.s. spends billions to land on a rock millions of miles away while their own people are dying due to a lack of infrastructure spending. At least the ancient pharaohs had their human sacrifices buried with them.

Seems fair since they’re sending Canada vaccines.

Yup, I'd be dead without a vaccine.  Err...wait, I haven't had one yet.

      Meh, carry on.

  16. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/texas-power-outages-alberta-1.5917052 In the end, many natural gas wells and other infrastructure froze in Texas and surrounding regions, limiting supply in this time of high demand. Other thermal assets, such as coal and natural gas power plants, also experienced issues with frozen water intakes, and some wind capacity has been lost to icing. Who's to blame? It's only natural in the aftermath of a serious event like the Texas power outage is that people will be quick to seek and assign blame. Many are all too eager to find any excuse to reinforce their pre-existing notions about the unreliability of wind, blaming the outages on a dearth of wind power. But answers aren't so simple, and it will take time to fully dissect this event. What we do know is that wind performed, for the most part, roughly as expected: a small fraction of its maximum capability, but roughly in line with what the Texas system counts on for reliability purposes in the winter. Natural gas, oft-touted for its ability to provide reliability in power grids with large shares of renewables, was beset with struggles. Freezing temps led to shut-in production in a system not designed for these temperatures. This resulted in a lack of gas supply and soaring natural gas prices — in some cases 100 times typical pricing. During the Texas outage event, over 30,000 MW of thermal power plants, or 35 per cent of thermal power capacity, was offline.
  17. But this is not just about wind turbines going down. Natural gas and coal-fired power plants need water to stay online. Yet those water facilities froze in the cold temperatures and others lost access to the electricity they require to operate. Because of the large amounts of water needed for a population like Texas they'd be looking at major overhauls. https://www.powermag.com/prepare-your-coal-plant-for-cold-weather-operations/

  19. The United States chemical weapons program began in 1917 during World War I with the creation of the U.S. Army's Gas Service Section and ended 73 years later in 1990 with the country's practical adoption of the Chemical Weapons Convention (signed 1993; entered into force, 1997). Destruction of stockpiled chemical weapons began in 1985 and is still ongoing. As of December 2012 declarations to the OPCW, the United States still possessed 3,134 tons of chemical weapons agents, consisting of mustard gas, sarin, and VX. These agents are scheduled to be destroyed by 2023 after construction of the necessary destruction facilities. Interesting that the u.s. still has them.

No one wanted it, probably because trump has a tacky sense of style.  If someone took over the building they'd spend a fortune to redecorate, not worth the risk.

Ironic that casino owners don't like to gamble.  ?

Sounds to me more like they have a bad case of Trump derangement syndrome.

  21. I'm not one to trample on peoples graves, but good riddance.
  22. https://www.nrcan.gc.ca/energy/energy-sources-distribution/renewables/wind-energy/wind-energy-cold-climates/7321 Wind turbine manufacturers are increasingly recognizing the impacts of cold climate operation and are building turbines better equipped to handle winter conditions. With the installation of “cold weather packages” which provide heating to turbine components such as the gearbox, yaw and pitch motors and battery, some turbines can operate in temperatures down to -30C. Natural gas or propane will not freeze at any normal conditions on earth. ... But if water gets into gas pipes, it can obviously freeze and cause problems. Plumbing codes require “drip legs”: short dead-end pieces of pipe extending down at low points, to catch any moisture that gets into the gas lines.
  23. https://www.claimsjournal.com/news/national/2021/02/12/302028.htm The cold is also weighing on the state’s sprawling energy infrastructure. Natural gas pipes and processing plants are starting to shut, disrupting output of the heating fuel. “It is going to be a mess,” said Jason Dunn, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Fort Worth. “This is extremely unusual. I would go as far to say that it could be a historic event.” Would more natural gas help anyone? Also note the date on that article was last week.
