I sort of agree with what the head of Rogers has said. Telus was barred from buying Mobilicity because it's "anti-competitive" but a company that's 10 times larger than Rogers will be allowed to buy struggling wireless providers because they aren't from Canada. Then again the Big 3 have benefitted greatly to get their lines laid with government help so it's no surprise they have a decisive advantage over up and comers. Verizon will have an uphill climb to beat to compete with the Big 3. They have a huge headstart on any future competitors.

Making Ken Curan the candidate was a horrible choice.

High cost of Recovering Liberal Deleted E-Mails
Boges replied to scribblet's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
It wasn't Hudak as much as it was the residents. Oakville brought in Erin Brockovich. Had Hudak decided to cancel the plants (had he won) he could have blamed it on the incompetence of the Liberals for deciding to put it there in the first place. It is the cover-up. They weren't honest and forward with the investigation and move evidence keeps coming out showing how political the move was. It keeps this story going. The fact they were lobbying the speaker in the conflict ruling keeps the story going further. The fact Dalton quit and prorogued government for months because of the scrutiny he was receiving is even more evidence they didn't want the truth to come out. We'll see on Thursday the damage their actions have really done. -
Sure and we should hold off definitive judgement until more evidence is made public, if it ever does. But it seems lots of judgement is going on from both sides of the debate.

People who defend this cop are just using hypotheticals to make their point. Perhaps he was this, perhaps he was that. Perhaps he had a concealed Uzi, perhaps he was a vampire. What we know for sure though is he was isolated in a streetcar and shot multiple times and tazed. The cop that did the shooting (indicating only one guy took all those shots) has been suspended. I read this morning that a suspension like that is rather rare. So it doesn't look good for the cop in question. That being said this kid seems to be getting the Trayvon Martin treatment. We need justice for Sammy? Really? There was a massive protest in Toronto yesterday with the same type of people that felt Darcy Allan Shepperd (The cyclist who decided to pick a fight with a former politician in a car and ended up dead because of it) somehow didn't have a major role in his fate were out in full force. Though I believe the cops overreached I do believe this kid could have easily avoided his fate. You can be outraged by how the police reacted but don't act like innocence was last early last Saturday morning.
-
Even if that was true, after the first three shots he clearly wasn't advancing anymore. There's absolutely no reason for the second round of shots.

Negative billing was something you got without requesting, and the onus was on the consumer to opt out of the service. How hard is it to cancel cable channels? About as hard as it would be to cancel a firewall. People still fiercely objected to having to do it.
-
Evidence suggests, from those analysing the video and the guy that took it, that shots were fired when the "target" was down. He was definitely tazed while down. It's safe to say someone on the police force was in the wrong.
-
I can compare this to negative billings that got Canadian cable companies in trouble over a decade ago. The difference is that it doesn't cost money, we'll upfront anyway. I'd imagine the cost of setting up a secure firewall and maintaining a list of those opting out will be passed onto the consumer somehow.

High cost of Recovering Liberal Deleted E-Mails
Boges replied to scribblet's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
But what makes the Gas Plant scandal bad is the price. Had they cancelled these plants in the early phases of planning like many wanted them to then the outcry wouldn't exist at all. Instead they called opponents NIMBYS. So it's a different type of scandal. I'd argue it's less corruption and more disrespect for the taxpayer, incompetence and entitlement. The corruption happens later when they refuse to be transparent and lie about their motives multiple times. Also you have a premiere that shuts down the house for months to avoid fielding questions about the matter. And you have a crime committed, in deleting public e-mails. There's multiple levels of outrage you can attach to this scandal. I'll agree the Wright/Duffy thing was handled horribly by the CPC but, and perhaps it's my bias, but I can't get as worked up over this as I can over what the Ontario Liberals did. -
But he was isolated in a Streetcar. He would have had to first make a move to exit the Streetcar before he would be considered a threat. And if he made a move to leave the street car he would be a pretty easy target to hit, you'd think. As he would have to go down a few stairs first. Again it's all speculative at this point.

Duffy? Mac Harb should have taken the spotlight!
Boges replied to Keepitsimple's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Is Harb still part of the Liberal caucus? You'd think Trudeau 2.0 would have him turfed. If not, that's shameful. All the Conservative Senators mired in scandal have been forced to sit as independents. -
High cost of Recovering Liberal Deleted E-Mails

You mean the Mike Duffy/Nigel Wright thing? In no way are they equal in corruption. The Gas Plant Scandal might end up costing the Ontario taxpayer $1 billion. If Wright hadn't paid off Duffy it would have cost the Canadian taxpayer $90,000. It ended up costing them nothing, but you have a Liberal Senator scamming more than double what Duffy did. The cover-up was worse than the crime. This Ontario government wasted hundreds of millions of dollars with impunity just to win a few seats then deleted e-mails to cover their tracks. I can't see how anyone could objectively see that as worse then the Wright/Duffy affair. -
I'm sure that information will be discovered. Now made public is another thing complete. What I find bothersome is there were shots, then a break, then more shots, then the kid was apparently tazed. I know shooting a handgun isn't as easy as Hollywood would make it appear but 9 shots is a lot, unless you have the worst aim ever. At the very least, it seemed like overkill.
-
I haven't heard that they were specifically transit cops. There were multiple officers on scene and you can hear sirens in the background. It's clear that street cops were called. As far as I know, transit cops are stationed at subway stations.
-
You mean the Toronto Police Service? The TTC isn't responsible for what happened. The guy apparently ordered everyone off the bus so that's evidence he wasn't looking to hurt anyone. He can be heard calling the cops "pussies" which might likely caused tension. The video also shows a cop being held back, meaning this maybe the result of a single rogue cop doing something he shouldn't do. Hopefully the investigation leads to more clarity but from the evidence already available, it doesn't look good for the cops involved.

Alcohol consumption being one reason. Why do Dance Clubs minimum ages? Most of these sites have a button saying you have to be 18 to view their content. Of course there's absolutely no way to prove or disprove your age so that's just a legal thing. The internet is a whole new world when it comes to access to content. There are ways to view gruesome violence that'd you'd have to be 18 plus to see in a movie on the internet if you really want to see it. Hate Speech is illegal in Canada but I'm sure you can find hate speech anytime you want on the interwebs.
-
You're assuming collusion there. This is already pretty high profile. I'm sure there'll be plenty of oversight from the SIU and Media alike. I guess it's good that there is a video then. Apparently Police can meet and get their story straight before meeting with the SIU. With a video already public it will be pretty tough for the "thin blue line" to protect the cops involved.
-
You won't even need to do that. Unless there's a trial, there is no reason to make the video public.
-
I would imagine you would have to have a password to access it. There's one safeguard. If you're worried about your child viewing porn you could put a firewall on the device. There's a second. Also for free wifi from big corporations, you usually have to sign up and click on a waiver. So somewhere in there, I'm sure, it deals with "inappropriate" content.
-
Because, I guess, they want people to use their pay-per-view porn. Not one hotel I've been to in the past several years has ever made their pay-per-view services a big deal. It's much more important to have free wifi. I actually probably wouldn't stay at a hotel that doesn't have free wifi.
-
I'd argue discussing Obama in an Ontario Elections thread is an unacceptable thread drift.
-
You can't compare someone trying to buy alcohol but forgets their ID to a legit "non porn" website being blocked by a porn filter. Well you can but it's not an equal comparison. There are many Wifi hotspots for cable providers but you have to prove that you subscribe to that service.

House of Cards, The Emmys and the way we watch TV
Boges replied to Boges's topic in Media and Broadcasting
Simple Media extender. Many Internet enabled TVs and Blu-Ray players do the same thing. Other use Apple TV. I used an Xbox 360. Which is kind of cruddy because in order to play Netflix I need an Xbox Live membership. As I get older, I play video games, especially online video games less and less. So I'll probably need to get a different Media extender soon.
