  1. Oliver Stone did a Documentary series last year that calls that claim seriously into question. http://www.thenation.com/blog/175590/interview-oliver-stone-why-us-was-wrong-drop-two-atomic-bombs-japan
  2. Perspective of the audience. They had the Stalingrad episode, Barbarrossa and the Red Star episode. A lot of the episodes did focus on specific things, An episode about Italy, an Episode on Africa, and Episode on the Atlantic, and episode about the Bombing Campaign. Of course the show was Western Front Europe focuses but that's what most of the people who would be watching care about.
  3. I don't think anyone expected them to beat the Blackhawks on the road. The Hurricane loss was a bit of a fluke. They do struggle with Carolina for some reason though.
  4. Fine, but the Soviets were decimating the army in Manchuria. The Japanese were willing to surrender as long as they could keep the Emperor. Eventually they did allow Japan to keep the Emperor and it helped to rebuild Japan.
  5. The fact that the casualties of the US exceeded that of the Japanese made Iwo Jima significant, not the strategic significance. Ditto with Peleliu which, I don't recall was mentioned much at all in WoW. These conflicts were brutal even though they did little for the war effort strategically in hindsight. People will use these battles as evidence as to why an invasion of the mainland couldn't happen. Evidence shows, however, that dropping the Bomb was more as a show of force for the Soviets than it was to end the war before an invasion was needed. The Japanese would have surrendered eventually anyway. The US wanted the war over before the Soviets could take more of the spoils.
  6. Kessel Hat Trick was a good way to get the Leafs off the losing streak. The Ducks were 7-1. Had anyone said the Leafs would get out of the Clarkson suspension 7-3 everyone would have taken that.
  7. Perhaps. I don't recall watching all of Banzai. They show the Japanese soldiers cheering after each victory. The Pacific condensed several major battles into one episode where they had an entire episode about Burma. Iwo Jimo or Okinawa were far more important than anything that happened in Burma.
  8. Don't remember seeing Japanese soldiers interviewed. Most with true insight likely offed themselves.
  9. The Military Channel shows episodes of this regularly. Lawrence Olivier is pwn! Some great interviews: Albert Speer, Curis Le May, Paul Tibbets, Lord Avon, Bomber Harris. The who's who of WW2 players still alive in the early 70's. Some of the better episodes IMHO are. Morning: "D-Day episode" One Our Way: "US enters the War" Alone: "Battle of Britain" and of course Pincers: "European Theatre post D-Day" Basically the episodes where the good guys are winning. :-D Occupation: Holland and Genocide are very difficult to watch. Especially the scene where the German Guard details how the Gas Chambers worked and how the prisoner discussed how he had to dismantle the piles of bodies out of the Gas Chambers. In Occupation: Holland they detail how Germany losing the war made life in Europe absolute Hell. The treatment of the Pacific theatre was lacking, It's BBC though so what would you expect. The Bomb episode was great though. The final episode Remember is an absolute waste of time. Just full of useless anecdotes. Reckoning was good but didn't really touch on the Cold War implications of the decisions made in WW2. They really do touch on every single important aspect of the war. The even have a full episode dedicated to Stalingrad and the Burma campaign.
  10. Because On Peak is almost double the price as Off peak still. But the gap between the prices is getting smaller. People are still going to make the decision to use high consumption devices on Off Peak hours because the savings are still there, the point is that the savings are lessening at a faster rate. I cannot cite this as you always require but I suspect as more people use OffPeak hours the profits are reduced so raising those rates at a faster percentage is required. Less than 5 years ago I remember paying off peal rates at 4 or 5 kw/H for off peak. That's a huge increase in not a long time. I will admit one thing that does help is making the OffPeak weekday rate kick in at 7pm. It used to be 9pm. Who can wait until 9pm to cook dinner? Especially when during the winter period OnPeak is in the morning and evening instead of during the mid-day where it's Mid-Peak because heating a house is less essential. Looks pretty similar. What are their delivery costs? I'm not too bothered with the price of electricity as most, it's one of the smaller bills I pay. But the continuous trend upward without any indication of relief is the concern. At what point will the rate increases level off?
  11. This should be a surprise to No one as the Liberals admitted as much in a pamphlet they sent out in 2011. http://m.680news.com/2011/02/08/ontario-tories-call-electricity-brochure-waster-of-taxpayer-money/ What kind of bugs me about recent new is this. http://m.thestar.com/#!/business/redirect/48ae6b0278d3e41ef5ce7ade6aeb805a If people wanted to attempt and mitigate the rate hikes by using most of their Hydo at off peak hours the Liberals are making that more difficult by raising off peak prices at a higher rate than the other 2 categories.
  12. Another reason why calling it Spirit Day is dumb. Kids know it's Halloween, just like kids know it's Christmas.
  13. Calling it Spirit Day is sort of canceling.
  14. Certain parents, I'm pretty sure it wasn't a consensus. Likely the same type of parents that would also think canceling Halloween is a good idea.
  15. Talk about stigmatizing kids! http://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/toronto-school-bans-junk-food-from-students-lunch-bags-1.1500394 Is that an non-approved snack in your lunch bag? SHAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  16. I heard about that last week on the radio on the Fan 590. It's not like real Leaf fans can afford to go to games anyway so most won't notice.
  17. Ford has sort of pigeon-holed himself into having to be outraged over any example of apparent waste. Giorgio is a bit of a douche for doing that unless the guy is frequently sleeping.
  18. It's fine to debate about it. Getting out shot that bad is definitely something that needs to be addressed. What bugs me, and this goes for all sports debates, is when people predict something like the Leafs collapse because 2 years ago they did. There's no evidence this team will crumple like Ron Wilson's and Burkie's team did 2 years ago. Speaking of your Oil BD, I heard on the radio that the Oilers maybe inquiring about Reimer. Give up Eberle for him? :-D
  19. I couldn't care either way. This revelation means nothing though. The board apparently received a massive amounts of complaints due to the stories in question. I guess they had to do something.
  20. Ultimately it was a pointless exercise. If you can't confirm the accuracy of the report, how can you claim journalistic integrity was followed?
  21. Perhaps you signed up before such questions were asked. They don't ask these questions every year. I've been with my company for going on 10 years now. They probably still have my commute time from back then on file. It's not a main factor in tabulating a rate. My theory with putting a GPS in the car is it's a gateway to charging people for "actual" usage of a vehicle. In Ontario tolling for usage (using a GPS) was one of the "revenue tools" that was on the long list for Metrolinx to pay for this $50 billion Big Move plan. As fuel efficiency increases it's reasonable to assume the yield from gas taxes would dry up. That would be a way to charge people for using roads. If the province does it why wouldn't insurance companies follow suit.
  22. Winning 4-1 last night is more than just goaltending. They've only been held under 3 goals once this season, their only loss. They had Reimer in net last night. So it would appear they have two more than capable goalies. A frill Leaf fans have not had to enjoy in as long as I remember. We could attribute these wins to the fact they're beating up on Western Conference cupcakes but they do have division wins against the Habs and Sens. One would also have to concede though that they're suffering a depleted lineup. Get Fraser, Kulemin and Clarkson back, this team should be even better.
  23. 5-1 without Clarkson. So they'll survive the suspension no worse than .500. You'd have to assume they'll be much better with him. Good teams win games like Saturday. The game seemed lost, Bernier had an off game but they still managed to win. Reimer gets the nod tonight against The Wild tonight. He'll have to channel the ghost of Mike Palmateer in order to win back the starting job.
  24. I'm think you're a bit trusting of these companies. Maybe initially it'll be a win-win but I suspect there will be unintended consequences of providing your insurers with this information.
  25. It would still be arbitrary because the companies will pay what the market will bare. We have a private system in Ontario where you can leave a company if they charge too much. You'd really support companies charging you for infractions as you drive. You speed ONCE! they have the right to raise your rates, even if a cop doesn't issue a ticket. That's a total Big Brother mentality.
