Basically everything that politicians promise their constituents is related to standard of living. So, does the open borders policy protect the standard of living of America's poorest people? Troops in that area are mainly there to man distant early warning systems, AFBs, HAARP, and to maintain their claims to Arctic resources, etc. The number of troops there isn't nearly enough to have anything to do with aggression or territorial defence on the scale of a conventional war. As a matter of fact, what NATO gains by having Estonia and Latvia as members, they probably lose in terms of a security risk, because it's hard to imagine that Russia doesn't have a large number of spies there, plus access to sensitive information regarding communications and the like. So by your own admission now, you're realizing that Canada's proximity across the Arctic and the US's proximity across the Bering are completely minor in terms of being a direct threat to Russia. Small tanks, small planes, small subs, small surface ships, no missiles, etc. Re: fighter planes however, the Su-57 is more of a comparable to a Raptor than a CF-18. The SU-57s are also getting battle-tested now. The CF-18s have never been a 'go-to' piece in any war. They're like close support for American fighters.

The Ukrainians are fighting a guerrilla warfare battle. The Russians have to destroy all kinds of civilian targets to hit the Ukrainian military. They're even using ambulances as troop transports. It's an embarrassment to real soldiers to be compared to Ukrainians. This is a war of propaganda as much as anything.
