USA Sinks into Authoritarinism
dialamah replied to ReeferMadness's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
1. How many times do you need to read that the essay's author wasn't comparing Trump to Hitler, but was comparing the similarities in the political situation that brought Hitler to power. The author also examines the differences of "then" vs. "now" and why an authoritarian regime, if it did come about in the US, would not look like Hitler's Germany, but more similar to Putin's Russia. 2. The author, Christopher Browning, is an historian who has studied and written about Nazi Germany for decades. His "opinion" has credibility light years beyond that of a right-wing partisan hack on an internet forum.- 223 replies

USA Sinks into Authoritarinism
dialamah replied to ReeferMadness's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Yes indeed. So if the essay writer is correct, and the Republicans have manipulated the system so that they are in position to remain in power, regardless of what the electorate actually want, wouldn't that be a problem? Because that is the situation the historian sees developing.- 223 replies

USA Sinks into Authoritarinism
dialamah replied to ReeferMadness's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Who is the politician named as "the gravedigger of democracy"? Here is the full quote, from the essay: This is the end of the essay. For the Nth time, the essay isn't about Trump becoming another Hitler, but about the similar political situation in Germany (and the world) that led to his government. Its about change for the worse, due to political machinations by people seeking power at all costs.- 223 replies

You did not read it, made (wrong) assumptions, and argued against those assumptions. The essay's author specifically says "Trump is not Hitler and Trumpism is not Nazism". In fact, he nentions a different politician as being an architect of the current political situation. I would say you just proved my allegation.- 223 replies

Sorry for my accidental misdirection; it's a few posts down from the OP. Here is the link to the essay, without commentary on blindness or ignorance. Anyway, que s'era s'era. If the world is going to go hard right, sink into a second dark ages, be decimated by progressives or climate change, or suddenly be overcome by humanitarianism and good sense, we'll just have to wait and see.- 223 replies

USA Sinks into Authoritarinism
dialamah replied to ReeferMadness's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
The difference between Muslim immigrants = Sharia Law and the article and essay referenced in the OP is that there are specific similarities between the political situation in America today and the political situation in Germany prior to the rise of Hitler. The author doesn't say that America is headed for Nazism or about to commit genocide, but that the way in which republicans have stacked the deck in their favor by gerrymandering and now, the SCOTUS, among other things, puts them in position to become the party in control, permanently - or at least until a revolution happens I guess. Would such a party support, uphold or progress rights for women, gays, minorities or the working class? There's a pretty big difference between fear-of-sharia based on some hyped up news stories, and an historian, an expert in his field, noting similarities in two different time periods.- 223 replies

Right-wingers here: let's not bother reading the article, assume what it says and then argue against our assumptions. Because if there is anything right wingers are good at, it's arguing against what wasn't said and what hasn't happened.- 223 replies

Have you read the article? Judging by this response I think not. If one waits until the "third term", whether literal or not, its too late to "stand up and do something". Note again that the author does not claim certainty, only that the path to absolute power by Hitler is similar to the path being followed in the US by Republicans. It's not just about this government or Kavanaugh, or Trump but about the way the political system has been manipulated, by certain Republicans, for at least a decade.- 223 replies

You should actually read the essay; it's not about Trump being a Nazi, or even getting a third term. It's the undermining of democratic institutions which may lead to an illiberal regime. The author doesn't even say this will happen, but notes the similarity in the history that allowed Hitler to gain power and what is happening in the States now. His notion is that the consolidation of totalitarian power, if it happens, would mean that a "Republican Party" would forever hold power, and do whatever it wanted, including the erosion of rights of individuals. To paraphrase my brother-in-law about Egyptian elections under Mubarak: "I don't have to vote, the Republicans know who I want."- 223 replies

Those who refuse to learn from history are condemned to repeat it. But no doubt they won't notice. Just as Erdogan and Putin have their genuine supporters, so will those who directly benefit or hope to benefit from oppression of "others" support an illiberal regime in the US.- 223 replies

Perhaps you should have read the whole thing. Twice, even, because then you might have noticed where the author drew parallels to the rise of Nazis in Germany, as well as where the current political situation is different.- 223 replies

Ford-Kavanaugh Sexual Assault Allegation
dialamah replied to WestCanMan's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
People do things that scare them all the time. I go on tall things, even though I get vertigo on heights. I speak in front of people, even though it scares me. If people never did anything that scared them, we would have a lot fewer soldiers actually fighting. Plenty of people are "white knuckle" flyers, but still fly regularly for work. Its ridiculously simplistic to think someone who was afraid of flying would never fly. But then, conservatives seem to think being ridiculously simplistic makes them clever. Or something. -
Ford-Kavanaugh Sexual Assault Allegation

I understand that Conservative misogynistic men cannot handle even the idea that some women do not submit to men and are not afraid to speak out. Thanks for identifying yourself. -
Ford-Kavanaugh Sexual Assault Allegation
dialamah replied to WestCanMan's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
As long as conservatives aren't claiming they're better than Liberals. Except they do, every single day. And when their hypocrisy is pointed out to them, they cling eagerly to decades old stuff, as if that somehow makes what they are doing acceptable. If it was not acceptable then, it sure as fvck isn't acceptable now just because conservatives are doing it. By the way, if Democrats have no honor, are liars, are corrupr and hypocrites, then what are Republucans who double and triple down on all of that by electing and supporting a corrupt, racist, misogynistic lying piece of shvt like Trump? -

How would people who aren't falsely accused react? Exactly the same, perhaps? -
Ford-Kavanaugh Sexual Assault Allegation
dialamah replied to WestCanMan's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
The problem with Conservative women who excuse men who commit sexual assault. Kowtowing to men will not save these female misogynists or their daughters. Its not surprising that these female misogynists are such ardent supporters of Trump, or that they happily dismiss Ford's experience while excusing and protecting Kavanaugh; sucking up to men has become their raison d'etre. -
