The current situation should be intolerable for any state calling itself a liberal democracy. Israel controls the lives of millions of Palestinians it has no intention of ever giving citizenship or full rights to. That’s the definition of apartheid. The recognition by Canada focuses attention on other matters too, eg the right of Palestinians to the houses and land they own which is constantly being violated by Israel in the West Bank.

A pig-to-human heart transplant.
SpankyMcFarland replied to SpankyMcFarland's topic in Health, Science and Technology
There is some wiggle room for porcine transplants in both Islam and Judaism and I suspect many will use it if they become routine. https://divinity.uchicago.edu/news/laurie-zoloth-porcine-organ-transplants-new-york-times .com/2025/09/16/health/pig-transplants-jews-muslims.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare Sent from my iPad -
The PCs are house-trained here. Normally there’s not much to choose between the two main parties but this time we have the new Churchill Falls deal on the table. I believe we must press ahead and get this deal signed ASAP or the province could go bust. It’s a weird campaign so far. There’s so much at stake and yet most people are not getting excited at all.

Thank you for pointing out this ‘other forum’ to me.

Why does Trump attract so much attention? Because he’s the presidential equivalent of a horse in a hospital, causing mayhem on a constant basis. His transgressions are 24/7. At the moment he’s openly vowing to go after attorneys who have prosecuted him and comedians who have mocked him. It is striking how tolerant conservatives are of this grotesquely inappropriate behaviour. I know he’s doing things for them but I thought they had a little more integrity and good taste than that. And it gets worse - his fans aren’t all south of the border by the looks of things. Really. Actual Canadians are defending this avowed enemy of our country.

Thoughts on Summer 1914 - and our current world
SpankyMcFarland replied to August1991's topic in The Rest of the World
In 1914 Europe was inherently unstable. From Ireland to Poland to the Balkans and across Western Asia, people lived under oppressive foreign rule and bitterly resented it. Reasonable, peaceful reform had been rejected by the empires which led to an explosion. -
Would you at least concede that it’s a highly suspicious coincidence for Carr to make a threat and the guy to be suspended so soon afterwards? A claim by somebody with a huge financial interest in lying is not what I was looking for. If it were true, there should be a lot more internal evidence backing it up that the plan was in motion. And for how long are they saying they thought this? A day or two is statistically unlikely, let’s say. The way you put that is quite woke. You move from addressing the factual veracity of what I am saying on this particular matter to go after my intent, my ‘concern over free speech’. Why not address whether what I am saying is true or false and leave all that intent stuff for the psychotherapists? I’m not a free speech absolutist. I was appalled by the outrageous lies told by Alex Jones about the Sandy Hook parents which prolonged their nightmare for years. What he said wasn’t one opinion but an elaborate and sustained falsehood about a massacre of children that he claimed did not happen.
-
OK. Do you honestly believe that claim from Nexstar? What is your personal opinion on this otherwise very suspicious sequence of events? Is there any confirmation from somebody without billions at stake that his claim is true? If Joe Biden had done this would you have the same opinion? Again quoting wrongdoing by other people as justification for your wrongdoing does not stand up in a court or in the Christian moral code. It’s the response of a five year old and is very dangerous for a country. Why do I have to even say that?
-
You’re quoting the company? Do you think they’re going to tell us the unvarnished truth there? They have billions of reasons not to. Doing so would seriously offend Dear Leader and cost them a fortune. A truth universally acknowledged about authoritarians is that abject obedience to their every whim must appear spontaneous and unforced.
-
The government expressed their opinion to the owners and they ‘decided’ to suspend him after that. Cause and effect could not be clearer. Those who deny the meaning of this sequence either don’t know or don’t want to know how the world works. As anybody in a developing country can tell you, when the government speaks like this you better listen the first time or you’ll do it ‘the hard way’.

It’s not finalized. The final deal is scheduled to be signed in April 2026 at the moment. The other crowd here, the PCs, want to rip it up which is complete madness as far as I am concerned. I may even start campaigning in this election. There is an issue at stake which is really important and yet isn’t receiving much attention here. Here’s a FAQ sheet from HydroNL. Of course, it’s biased but I presume the basic facts are correct. https://nlhydro.com/good-to-know/the-churchill-falls-mou-just-the-facts/

Fair play to Cruz. I didn’t take him for a libertarian or someone bothered by principles too much. He was willing to join the dots and call out the reality of an implicit threat made by a powerful person which is exactly what organized crime does; if you know who I am I don’t have to spell it out and incriminate myself, do I? We know what we’re talking about here. Of course, he’ll take a lot of heat for this from the Trump mob. The campaign line that Trump is not a politician has some truth in it. Yes, he’s a brilliant salesman who can flog his line to people but he didn’t learn to respect the rules of the democratic game over decades, in particular what you can’t do when in office. What Cruz doesn't seem to appreciate is that Trump and those who do his thinking for him have no intention of letting their authoritarian moves be bad for conservatives because they don’t intend to ever give Democrats the opportunity run the country again.

Disney again which says something. I didn’t agree with that firing either but the big difference is it wasn’t the government doing it. Trump is following the same playbook as Putin and El-Sisi who both went after comedians. Incredibly, free speech took an even bigger hit in Egypt after Morsi was overthrown. Autocrats hate ridicule.

So any posters here ready to defend American nincompoop Pete Hoekstra, also an ambassador apparently, who blames Canada - yes, you’re reading that right - for the tension between our countries these days? https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/us-ambassador-to-canada-disappointed-anti-american-campaign-1.7637534
