Gender Issues - The Miss America Pageant still exists...
Hal 9000 replied to Michael Hardner's topic in Arts and Culture
If a beautiful person has an opportunity to get on TV, they'll take it...man or woman. Let's not bother blaming society or Donald Trump, these people are there doing what they're doing because they can get something out of it. I agree with Mighty AC, it's the little girl peagents and the mothers that promote them that disgust me. I thought Bad Gramdpa showed it for the disgusting spectacle that is really is. -

It's less common in Canada, but late term abortions do happen. Anyway, the topic is about aborting Down Syndrome babies and considering when DS is detected, they'll almost all be considered late term. -

It is Immoral to not abort a Downs Syndrome Foetus?
Hal 9000 replied to Argus's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
Of course it's difficult to legislate, it's a hot button topic. As I said, political suicide. At 7 months a baby can recognize it's mothers voice and it can hear and retain music. You see people talking to and playing music for their babies at this time because presumably they can do this. A baby at 7 months can usually survive just fine and live a healthy life. I had a premie at just under 8 months - she's a happy and healthy teenager. The issue here is that Down syndrome babies are diagnosed at 14-20 weeks which puts the most likely scenario of abortion into the third trimester. If I was ruling the land, I would try to eliminate any third trimester abortions. The baby is just too far along by this point to be considered a fetus. -

I was kidding - of course. Actually, when I heard the name, I thought of the former Canuck owner Griffiths. I'll look up linda Griffiths right now! PS - Posting this to the Arts and Culture should be good enough, I would think. -

It is Immoral to not abort a Downs Syndrome Foetus?

As bcsapper said the SCOC won't touch the issue. To draw a line anywhere would draw the ire of every feminist and pro-choicer in the country - especially if it's the conservatives that proposed it. Saying "no" to any women's group is political suicide. I have what I would call a "point of no return", but I've just retained from identifying it. -

At some point the woman should be accountable for the baby growing inside her, I don't think that accountability should start at birth. P.S - To be more clear, I should've said "accountable to the baby growing inside her". -

I suppose there could be some exceptions, but when that happens it inevitably becomes a slippery slope and then the exceptions become the norm. In fact, that's probably why abortions are so common place now. For me, it's a similar argument to the euthanasia debate. Where do we draw the line? At pain, whose pain? What type of pain? I could say that my exceptions would be in case of rape or incest, but then girls would claim date rape (some of which is valid) which slides to "I don't like the guy", I could say physical disabilities, but then are we aborting babies with a spinal defect, cleft palates, club feet or an unformed limb? I know people with Down Syndrome who are productive people (in their own way) and actually brighten up a room or show inspiration to others around them. Maybe we should tell Alex Bilodeau (and I do hate the example) that his brother should've been on the abortion list. I, myself probably should've been on the abortion list, but that was during a time when young mothers went to live with Grandma for a few months and gave the baby up. -

Babies are not born with common sense, discipline or empathy. Yes, that is all learned, but when and how? Until it is learned toddlers are by in large self absorbed, self indulgent little people. 3YO Johnny will shove 2YO Suzie to the ground to take her treat and not think a second about it - and asking Johnny how he feels about it doesn't make the slightest difference because all Johnny knows is that he's got the treat. It's naive to assume differently. -

A 1-2 YO will hit, kick, bite, spit, shove...whatever they have to do to get a toy, attention from mom or dad, a spot in the sandbox, a treat...whatever. And I guarantee they've all done it at one point or another. -

There you go again being intentionally obtuse. You don't know a whole lot of toddlers obviously. -

Hal 9000 replied to Argus's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
I find it somewhat hypocritical that if a baby is born at 7 months and the mother drops it in a dumpster, we are outraged and call it disgusting - we may even want to see her prosecuted, yet a woman can go to a clinic at 8 months and have her baby aborted legally and ethically - and we (as a society) are all OK in our support of her decision. P.S - I'll refrain from my (too graphic) description of abortion. -

Hitting isn't a learned behaviour, its natural, so is biting. As I said earlier, babies hitting (or biting) other babies is not at all uncommon. -

Hal 9000 replied to WestCoastRunner's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
The punishment does have to fit the infraction. If a child won't eat their vegetables, won't clean their room or forgets their bike helmet etc., then no, a spanking isn't the proper punishment and other solutions can work just fine. Situations where a child totally disrespects his parent (or caregiver) by hitting or spitting at them, gets ahold of a lighter, thievery (sometimes - depends on age), runs into the street or tries harming another child etc., a message has to be sent and I have no qualms about laying out a spanking for these serious infractions. As I said, kids will manipulate and find their boundaries and some behaviours can not be excused. Kids need to know who is in charge and that that person knows whats best for them. My kids knew what their boundaries were, what limits could be stretched and what was totally unacceptable by an early age. -
