  1. The grounding of a bulk carrier ship near Prince Rupert this week highlights the grave risk of an oil spill if tanker traffic is allowed to increase dramatically on the North Coast, environmentalists and First Nations warn. This only adds credence to the latest lawsuits that have been brought against Enbridge.
  2. Let's not forget, this was a black woman. Had this been a white woman, forget it. It wouldn't have made the news.
  3. As I mentioned in an earlier post, you are generalizing about women in the workforce. Are most of them standing out in the cold waiting for a bus? Come on, let's move this conversation forward. Again, how do you know women don't like working as a retail store clerk or administrative assistant. Maybe they are working their way up the food chain to higher mangement levels. Isn't that where men got started? In the mailroom? Many, many women would prefer a career as well as a family. Do not assume most women want to stay home and bake cookies.
  4. Let's throw her in prison, take her kid away, give her kid to someone else who can foster parent her. Her kid would be better off, wouldn't she? We did justice!
  5. This thread was started in January, 2013. It seems a bit tiring to go on and on about U.S. healthcare being mediocre. Surely, we all know that by now. This thread is just bashing against the U.S. healthcare system. We know it's inferior to ours. Why do we keep going on and on about it? Does it make us feel better? Maybe there are canadians out there that feel the american health care system is better than ours? If so, speak up! I am getting tired of listening to the same old, same old.
  6. I think that many, many women would find great offense to your answer. Most work that women do outside of their home is because they want to get outside into the workforce away from the doldrums of raising children everyday with the same repetitive tasks and responsibilities. Working outside the home allows for participation in the workforce, communicating with adults, contributing to the finances of the home, maintaining a sense of identity. Regardless if it is as a cashier at walmart, a waitress at the local pub. It really isn't up to you to judge whether women are doing menial work or work that fulfills their identity. And for the most part, when I brought up technological advances for women, I was thinking about women in third world countries. With engineering and technology standards that we have become accustomed to, these women are forever grateful. No longer do they have to haul water, wash clothes by hand. They can run their own business, farm some land, sell their produce. You see, I was not thinking about women who take these for granted. I was thinking about women who are striving to earn a few bucks to feed their children.
  7. There are so many issues with this story. This woman is a single mother, who works for minimal wages and cannot obviously afford childcare which everyone seems to overlook. What I do like about this post in the paper is that it draws attention to the sad state of single mothers obtaining affordable care for their children. Especially for children in the 9-12 years range. I remember for a short period of time, I was a single parent and I had latch key kids. And they would have been around the same age as this young girl. I recall telling my kids, you cannot leave our apt, you cannot answer the door, you cannot answer the phone etc etc they were in a prison until I returned home from work. I only hope that this story draws attention to underfunded child care not only in the U.S. but also in Canada.
  8. Not sure why you would call me out on this. You obviously knew I was referring to Argus and you also probably knew it was a typo error? But, that's ok. Whatever makes you feel good!
  9. Angus is not alone in his recognizant of racial intolerance in bc, however It is not as bad as he would like to believe
  10. im not sure how to address that, however, we have many inter raciall relationships as well
  11. we have many racist english folks against asian folks
  12. I agree that Angus brings forth very legitimate 'racist' arguments from canadians i do hear them absolutely in the mainland\
  13. We would love to introduce Angus into our neighbourhoods. And I don't mean any disrespect. He would have a blast! We do have a lot of fun, regardless of our nationality.
  14. let's get real. He was a kid.
  15. While I do enjoy diversity in Canada, I have a problem with cultures that use their religion to stifle and restrict women's rights within their own communities. I think that Canada should do more to educate immigrants of our liberal democracy and the rights of women in Canada.
  16. Not only is Marc Emery vowing to campaign for the liberals but his wife has put her name in the ring as a nominee in BC.
  17. People don't 'suddenly' find themselves in a foreign environment in their hometown. Immigration happens over a period of time. It is a process, not a one-time event. I live in Vancouver and most people that I come in contact with whether it's through work, social life or community work do not have the experiences that you speak of. In Vancouver, we are so appreciative of the fact that we can experience foods from around the world, we can have conversations with people from around the world, we can even (cover your ears) have sex with people from other parts of the world. We have interracial relationships, marriages, children of mixed ancestory. We are not a vanilla city and for the most part the majority of folks here like it just the way it is. As far as finding jobs, most of the white folks in the lower mainland have no problem finding jobs. It is the immigrants that struggle with finding jobs.
  18. Funny thing is, the police stand by in Guatemala and watch these folks cross the border into Mexico and nary a word is said. This is a very complex problem with no easy answers. Many of these people are being told by smugglers that the U.S. is allowing children to enter legally, and of course let's not forget that Honduras has the highest murder rate in the world and people are fleeing because of the violence. Does that mean it's ok? No, of course not. But it is a complex problem.
  19. Canada is in need of highly skilled IT workers, especially in Vancouver. In fact, microsoft and other software companies have moved to Canada because we allow a higher number of skilled workers into our country. When these people move to BC and get hired, they add to our economy. These jobs and companies would otherwise not exist if not for our immigration policy. And don't come back with an argument that canadian IT workers are missing out because that is just simply not true. Many people will not move to the BC coast because of the high cost of living. We need workers and the only way we will get them is by hiring foreign workers.
  20. Here is a link regarding Marc Emery http://news.nationalpost.com/2014/07/08/marijuana-activist-marc-emery-vows-cross-country-campaign-for-justin-trudeau-as-soon-as-he-gets-out-of-u-s-jail/
  21. JT has a problem with Marc Emery returning to Canada after being in a u.s. prison for selling marijuana seeds online. Emery wants to campaign for the liberals and JT wants no part of it. I wonder how they will keep Marc at arm's length!
  22. I am a little concerned that we would differentiate between multi-cultural and other canadians. It bothers me that we continue to separate these threads between 'identifying as canadians' and multicultural'. Are we not all canadians? Why do we need to separate these threads?
  23. If we want a riot, we can do better than any old ethnic group. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/riots-erupt-in-vancouver-after-canucks-loss-1.993707
