  1. Kudos to Waldo for questioning the very statement that I have asked.
  2. I am not sure why folks here are jumping to defend his remarks that are derogatory towards women. It is a common reaction with men generally speaking and I find it as no surprise here. Why do you feel the need to defend his statement? And if he is agreeing to a wage differential, than why all the fuss in this stupid thread? Can August think of nothing more substantial to create a barrier between men and women.
  3. Well, to be honest, I've met more irrational, hypocritical religious folks than irrational, hypocritical athiests. But of course, that's only coming from my personal experiences. And I probably interact more with non-religious and like minded folks.
  4. Well, I agree with you there but I was specifically addressing his statement.
  5. No, I absolutely do not know what he means!! And whatever he meant, is no excuse for making a statement such as this.
  6. Sounds like a bunch of folks coming up with excuses for why JT will be elected, instead of accepting the fact that he is the better leader.
  7. Your statement above causes me great suspicion as to your purpose in creating this thread. IOW, you feel women have less value in society? Is that what you believe?
  8. I would have to disagree with this statement. Many, many religious people I meet from various sects, Jehovah's Witness, Born Again, Baptists, etc are not tolerant and are not rational at all. It's actually pretty scary having conversations with them.
  9. I can see you haven't give this topic much serious thought.
  10. Banning burqas makes tremendous progress for womens rights. If you can't see that, no one is going to convince you otherwise.
  11. For every Muslim feminist that supports the right to wear the burqa, there are also many that do not. Perhaps if we actually listened to these women, we could be more helpful. Mona Eltahawy is an Egyptian-born commentator on Arab and Muslim issues Feminist Muslim Sihem Habchi on the burka and women's rights An Egyptian Feminist writes on the Burqa Ban Feminists silent about women in burqas
  12. Probably best to read this one too: Irresponsible Government: The Decline of Parliamentary Democracy in Canada
  13. I consider myself extremely lucky to have been born and raised in Canada, especially as a woman. When I see women walking the streets, covering themselves with Burkas, I have extreme empathy for them. They are being oppressed from expressing their unique individualism. Let's remember that the Burka is not a dress code for Muslims. It is quite simply a medieval oppression dictated by extreme Islamic men to further alienate them from society and suppress their rights. These women have had strict conditioning (brain washing) to wear the Burkas so of course they will insist on wearing them. Canada should be doing everything it can to protect, educate and promote these women's rights and that can be partly done by requirig them to remove their Burkas during this important ceremony. Removing the Burka may also offer them a tiny glimpse into Canada's stand for equality and civil liberties of all women in Canada. Even the Muslim Canadian Congress has asked to expand the Burka Ban.
  14. "Everyone does it. It's a rite of passage, almost, for political leaders," Toronto-based political strategist Marcel Wieder said. There is now a trend for politicians to write a book in the run up to an election, especially in the States and Canadian politicians are following the trend. Chretian wrote 'Straight From The Heart" before he became PM. Olivia Chow has released her memoirs in her run for Mayor. We will certainly see many more in Canadian politics. http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2014/08/08/justin-trudeau-memoir-autobiography-book_n_5661143.html
  15. Probably best to read this review on the book too. "Where critics will have a problem with this book is with its insufficient attention to context." For example: "While it’s correct to say Mr. Trudeau’s economic performance was mainly miserable, so were the results of most other leaders through the period. Economies were crashing all over the place. Check Britain’s foundering back then and the brutal misery index in the United States." and "The book laments Mr. Trudeau’s take on the United States. Again, context is needed – context such as Vietnam, racial riots, assassinations, Watergate and Richard Nixon. In these times, the last thing Canadians wanted was a leader cozying up to Washington. They wanted more economic, cultural and military independence and so did Mr. Trudeau." "Mr. Plamondon is on the money in saying that Mr. Trudeau alienated wide swaths of the country. At the same time, he had an enchanting impact as well. He is still admired by so many Canadians “because of the way he made them feel,” former Liberal strategist Chris Vivone says in the book. “He gave Canadians confidence and a sense of independence.” Add to that, a sense of strength owing to his intellectual steel." You can read the review here.
  16. I like the curls! Justin is his own man. Are you suggesting he be judged because of his father?
  17. Nothing new about a politician writing a book prior to an election. I'm looking forward to how his hair will be styled for the cover of the book.
  18. Of course they can, feminist is just a label anyway. And I thought he was comparing me to 'women' on this forum.
  19. I don't understand your issue with women and the healthcare system. Perhaps you and Shady should start a new thread.
  20. And I do hope Jaycee is ok. I haven't heard from her for a while.
  21. And who should then take care of the man's child?
  22. My mom only worked during the seasonal months of the year. She raised all her and my dad's children and was there to support the grandchildren. I don't recall her living in splendour drawing on her CPP, even after her husband passed away. However, I do know she raised successful children who now contribute to the tax base of the cities they live in.
