As far as I'm aware that cultural practice is only widespread within parts of the world where there are an awful lot of Muslims and Muslim influence. Egypt and Malaysia, for example, over 90% of the population of women is subjected to it. In Nigeria, which is only 50% Muslim, somewhere between 25% -50% of the women are subjected to it. In Somalia its 98% and in Malaysia 93%, in Mali 89%. All of the countries with high numbers of FGM are, as far as I'm aware, Muslim or mainly Muslim. The west african countries you talk about, ie, Senegal, Gambia, Mali, Burkino Faso, Guinea, are mainly Muslim. The practices is becoming popular in Indonesia, too, where, according to an article I read the authorities have given up trying to stamp it out in the face of opposition by religious authorities.

I don't have a preferred religion. They're all bunkum to me. So no one "gets a pass", including yours. I keep hoping that one day grown adults will stop believing in fairy tales that tell them to chop off their children's genitals.

Again, you take a one off case and try to make it seem like FGM is practiced and believed in by mainly Christians worldwide. It is the scope and extent of it in Islam that concerns me. It doesn't have that same scope and extent in Christianity.

Are we talking about just a certain country or are we talking about the overall practice of FGM and who practices it? I was talking about the belief and practice of it in general. Are you saying that FGM is practiced predominantly by Christians worldwide?

These things are not practiced in other religions/cultures to the extent they are in Islam. Your example of FGM being practiced in Christianity - for that I would say yes, it is cultural when certain Christians practice it. But it is not cultural when Islam practices it because it has been adopted as an Islamic belief. I would concede that FGM is not a mainstream Islamic belief but it is mainstream enough that most people associate it with Islam and most people who practice it, practice it in the name of Islam. Whenever it makes the news in Western countries -such as recently in Detroit - it is not Christians, but Muslims practicing it and bringing it to Western countries.

While there may be variations in how different cultures interpret Islam's beliefs - for instance, the many variations of things women must wear to cover themselves - the underlying beliefs are "specifically Islamic" - women MUST be covered. The belief that women are second class citizens who must be disciplined and controlled by men, is the Islamic belief that inspires the cultural variations. The cultures don't inspire the religion. It's the religion that inspires the cultures to adopt Islamic beliefs. And with no failsafes in Islam to stop rabid interpretations......you don't get to claim that culture is to blame for how the religion is interpreted by its followers. Denigration of women is intrinsic to Islam. That different cultures impose different methods to denigrate women, does not change the fact that they get this idea from and have the blessing of Islam to do so in the first place.

I don't think Harper was that bad. He did a capable, workmanlike job as PM. Nothing to sing any great praises of, but he clearly did care about the welfare of the country.

No, we have not. The census taken in 1971 did not even list Muslims separately since there were so few of them. They were lumped in with 'other'. In 1981 they were first counted - immigration having been opened up for some years by then, and there were 98,000 of them. Also, the immigrants we're taking in now are much more conservative and religious than back then. If you went back to Iran or Egypt or Lebanon in 1971 or 1981 you'd find very few women wearing Hijabs, let alone covering their faces. Now the great majority of women do, and the numbers increase each year - as they do in Canada. The Saudi influence has been growing in the Muslim world for decades.

They're in favor until they aren't. If I was in the pipeline business, I'd be pretty close to giving up on North America altogether. Decades-long timeframes to get things approved, only to have dozens of different jurisdictions and levels of government change their minds hundreds of times throughout a process, is not a business-friendly environment. Pipelines aren't the only thing this affects. It affects almost any kind of capital investment. Whether it comes to infrastructure, power generation, manufacturing, or distribution, it's almost impossible to build anything anymore on this continent. Simply too much byzantine bureaucracy to navigate. There's a reason Asia is covered in high speed rail which is non-existent in North America. There's a reason we haven't built any substantial new hydro power in decades despite it being obviously the best and cleanest power source. There's a reason why roads and highways are falling apart and over-congested. There's a reason why manufacturing is done overseas. It's not lack of money. America and Canada are awash in money compared to any other countries on Earth. No, the problem is governments simply won't get out of the way.
