jdobbin Posted April 29, 2007 Report Posted April 29, 2007 http://www.canada.com/topics/news/politics...9be4471&k=54821 Prime Minister Stephen Harper descended on small-town Quebec Saturday night to deliver a campaign-style speech to a crowd of about 400 Conservative and Action democratique du Quebec party supporters. He appealed to members of the "greater Conservative family" and moderate Quebec nationalists to return a Conservative majority government in a new election that will come "sooner or later." Perhaps Lucien Bouchard could run for the Tories again. Quote

jdobbin Posted April 30, 2007 Author Report Posted April 30, 2007 What's wrong with reaching out to one's ideological kin? Is your hatred of Harper that deep? Harper's idealogical kin is separation? Is your love of him so great that you cannot see the same pattern that Mulroney tried to use and failed at? Quote
jbg Posted April 30, 2007 Report Posted April 30, 2007 Does "nationalist" mean "separationist" or "federalist"? Not sure of the nomenclature. jdobbin Posted April 30, 2007 Author Report Posted April 30, 2007 Does "nationalist" mean "separationist" or "federalist"? Not sure of the nomenclature. Lucien Bouchard called himself a nationalist. I think we know which nation he was talking about. Quote
Charles Anthony Posted April 30, 2007 Report Posted April 30, 2007 Quebec separatists consider Quebec to be their "nation" thus, they are nationalists. Quebec federalists consider Canada to be their "nation" thus, they are also nationalists. Can we make Quebec politics even more confusing? PolyNewbie Posted April 30, 2007 Report Posted April 30, 2007 Harper on the side of nationalists now. Thats a joke since he is an internationalist. These guys will say anything that suits the moment. M.Dancer Posted May 14, 2007 Report Posted May 14, 2007 What's wrong with reaching out to one's ideological kin? Is your hatred of Harper that deep? For me it's the hatred of Nationalism...... Quote RIGHT of SOME, LEFT of OTHERS If it is a choice between them and us, I choose us
M.Dancer Posted May 14, 2007 Report Posted May 14, 2007 Quebec separatists consider Quebec to be their "nation" thus, they are nationalists. Quebec federalists consider Canada to be their "nation" thus, they are also nationalists. Can we make Quebec politics even more confusing? Close. Quebec separtists consider the Quebecois a nation, thus they are nationalists, everyone else are immigrants. Quebec Federalists consider partition of Montreal a reasonable measure if the Nationalists ever conmvince enough of their kin to commit economic suicide. Quote RIGHT of SOME, LEFT of OTHERS If it is a choice between them and us, I choose us
Figleaf Posted May 14, 2007 Report Posted May 14, 2007 The sad thing it that when Mulroney cozied up with separatism, he at least was doing what came naturally to him. Steve's bedfellowing is more shocking since his political roots should be warning him against this sort of thing. Alas, all that was good and decent about the Reform Party has been poisoned or swept away among the new Conservative Opportunists of Canada. Preston Manning would be spinning in his grave (if he were dead and respectable rather than alive and co-opted). Quote
sharkman Posted May 14, 2007 Report Posted May 14, 2007 So how did it work with Mulroney, did he win any elections with this strategy? Quote
Keepitsimple Posted May 14, 2007 Report Posted May 14, 2007 What is a Nationalist? Is it really that hard for people to understand that in Quebec, the majority of original French-speaking Quebeckers consider themselves Quebeckers first and Canadians second? It simply expresses the reality that their French culture is geographically isolated. It shouldn't be viewed as a bad thing and Nationalism is distinct from the 20% of Quebec who are diehard separatists. Just imagine if your province was the only province that spoke your language on a continuous day-to-day basis - wouldn't you be more attached to your province than to the country as a whole? Catchme Posted May 14, 2007 Report Posted May 14, 2007 Preston Manning would be spinning in his grave (if he were dead and respectable rather than alive and co-opted). Well, I think perhaps the following link might give someeone good perspective on what Manning might say. http://www.harperindex.ca/index.cfm, Quote When the rich wage war, it's the poor who die. ~Jean-Paul Sartre
Topaz Posted May 14, 2007 Report Posted May 14, 2007 I think perhaps he wants to "divide and conquer" Canada. He'll get Quebec going about leaving Canada, he'll peeved off the Atlantic provinces, which he has, he's peeved off more Canadians than any other PM in such a short time. He cares more about Alberta and the oil sands than the environment, he extends the military without talking about the pros and cons. He shuts down press, he's not a open and honest guy to this country and like Bush, he too secretive and stubborn and the way he talks in "question period" shows he has no class as a PM! He talks like a teen with a chip on his shoulder!! Quote
sharkman Posted May 15, 2007 Report Posted May 15, 2007 Okay, you described the divide part of Harper's grand strategy (though I don't concur, separation is at an all time low in Quebec), but you never fleshed out the conquer part. How does ticking off various parts of the country benefit Harper? Quote

He'll get Quebec going about leaving Canada, When did he say this? he'll peeved off the Atlantic provinces, which he has, He spoke honestly about the need to improve a culture of defeat and despair. he's peeved off more Canadians than any other PM in such a short time. I doubt it, but maybe the truth hurts. Maybe Canadians need to be talked to like adults by their PM's rather than like children. Government programs are not paid for by Santa Claus. He cares more about Alberta and the oil sands than the environment,Sloganeering. This is a resource that does no good sitting in the ground. he extends the military without talking about the pros and cons. On one hand, you complain about Americans dominating Canada. On the other hand you don't want a military. Which is it? He shuts down press, he's not a open and honest guy to this country and like Bush, he too secretive and stubborn and the way he talks in "question period" shows he has no class as a PM! He talks like a teen with a chip on his shoulder!!What "press" did he "shut down"? As far as Question Period, would you call the Libs' behavior dignified? noahbody Posted May 15, 2007 Report Posted May 15, 2007 quote] Well, I think perhaps the following link might give someeone good perspective on what Manning might say. http://www.harperindex.ca/index.cfm, Harperindex.ca is registered by Straight Goods News Inc - "Canada's leading independent online news magazine." Here's a link to the people behind this http://www.straightgoods.com/Services/SGTeam.shtml. One of the guys runs for office as an NDP candidate. The other guy is an NDP campaign worker. The editor is ahead of the writer's union and writes about workers. Something tells me she might support the NDP as well. Quote
sharkman Posted May 15, 2007 Report Posted May 15, 2007 Yeah, nice try catchme, but I don't think that link is anything more than NDP pablum, probably held in high esteem at Rabble. Quote
