As you might or might not already know, a couple of weeks ago CNN did a segment entittled "Hip-Hop: Art or Poison?...this segment was both biased and ignorant toward Hip-Hop.....Public Enemy founder and Hip-Hop Legend Chuck D was a big part of this segement....The folks at RAPproject.TV felt that Chuck's viewpoint was not fully represented during the CNN segment....So they tracked down Chuck to give them an exclusive, one on one sit-down interview on the issue.....During which the question is fliped.......Is CNN: News, Art or Poison?.....Chuck gives a great, insightfull interview that is a must watch for any political, pop culture, or Public Enemy fan:

Chuck D Interview on CNN: Art or Poison?

CNN is just a tool to influence oppinion and instill bias. how long did they cover anna nicole? benet ramsey bs? american idol? HOW ABOUT SOME REAL NEWS...I also have military documents stating that CNN and other networks need to act as force multipliers to sway oppinion and also distract the public from what was going wrong with the war. WHY did they leave vietnam? was it because they couldn't win? or because the public wouldn't let them, they didnt aprove. They feel that vietnam was a public relations disaster and is to blame for the loss, and they dont intend to make the same mistake.

even when they do cover the war, it isnt about the war. we hear nothing about what is actually going on, or what needs to be done, or why theyre doing it. instead they glorify it.

yes you're right, its bullshit. why would i want to be lied to? why would i want to hear about meaningless shit? why would i not want the full story?

you cant honestly think they can go into any depth with the avg news clip 2 minutes or less.

and plz give me examples of them actually talking about the strategy or whats really going on in the war. compare it to vietnam, ww1 & 2. then you can see how greatly inadequate it is. reporters must now be escorted, all their foorage analyzed.

Like every other mass media outfit, CNN will publish whatever they feel is most likely to attract the largest audience - in order to rent those eyeballs to their advertisers. That is their business model.

CNN, like every other mass media outfit, has no responsibilty to 'truth', 'good taste', or anything else save to respect the law and serve their shareholders/owners.

That being said, I have to agree - hiphop is poison, but that is mostly irrelevant.

all news is biased. it isnt even illegal (in the US or Canada) to release fake stories...

as for other news agencies...they are all owned by corporations. and by law, if one corporation owns another, the lesser corporation needs to make money for the owner(the larger corporation).

turn on CNN or FOX right now and see whats on, lmk if you call that news...

i think the CBC is alot better than most, but still not "legit"

"Early in life I had noticed that no event is ever correctly reported in a newspaper."

-George Orwell

in his time the newspaper was the same as our TV news(u already know this), which makes it relevant.

i have a few military documents detailing how they should use news networks to infuence the nations oppinions. i can send them to you(they're in adobe) or u can look them up

they are:

Military Operations in the CNN world: Using the Media as A Force Multiplier

by Leslie H. "Howdy" Belknap Major, US army

Truth and Deceit: Media Relations and Military Deception

by Robert T. Ross Lietenant Commander, United States Navy

Manipulating the Media by Stephen Badsey

(not military but describes whats going on now, but written in early 90's)

Information Operations and Counter-Propoganda:Making a Weapon of Public Affairs

by Colonel WC Garrison, United States Army

I wouldn't say *all* hip-hop is poison... but an awful lot of it sure is. A lot of this alleged "social commentary" and "voice of the underside" stuff is actually just a bunch of shit-heads bragging about their dicks, their money, their cars, and their criminal exploits. Hip-hop is like any other art form in that you have to sift through a lot of crap to find a few nuggets. Unlike most other art forms, I just can't be bothered to make the effort with hip-hop.

However, a lot of hip-hop seems to glamorize thug culture. Personally, I find it to be a sad and pathetic commentary on "urban culture" that having been shot or arrested increases the artists' "cred", in the same way I find it a sad and pathetic commentary on "urban culture" that getting arrested for weapons or drugs or spousal battery or rape causes a professional athlete's merchandise sales to increase.

"Urban culture" can go drive off a cliff.

Huzzah and Amen. Excellent post. To address the 'OP', I suppose, one must question whether CNN (and by extension, all media) serves to enhance or enable said 'poison', or provide a bulwark against it. The profit motive will dictate the former.

If you don't like CNN watch the BBC. Nobody is forcing anybody to watch cable news.

As well if the media was glorifying war then one would imagine that the support for the war in Iraq would be much higher than it is now.

They said the same things about Elvis and his pelvis. I'd rather listen to HipHop than Celine Dion anyday.

I'd rather listen to cats being tortured than Celine Dion. I don't see how that improves Hip-Hop, however.

While some portion of hip-hop might contain real social commentary, a lot of it just promotes shameless materialism, violence, and encourages a demeaning view of women.

 I agree

Almost three thousand people died needlessly and tragically at the World Trade Center on September 11; ten thousand Africans die needlessly and tragically every single day-and have died every single day since September 11-of AIDS, TB, and malaria. We need to keep September 11 in perspective, especially because the ten thousand daily deaths are preventable.

Then you agree that HipHop correctly reflects Western culture's materialism, violence, and misogyny.

I agree with Kimmy, some hip hop does provide as was said social commentary. However with most music and alot of popular culture today it is only focused on materialism, self interest, violence, and degradation. Personally I prefer The Beatles, John Lennon especially with reference to music.

The Beatles were also accused of glorifying drug abuse, had mysogyny in several lyrics, references to guns, and Lennon had the gall to preach "Imagine" (no possessions) from the back seat of his Rolls Royce Phantom V. To wit:

Run For Your Life (Lennon-McCartney)

Well I'd rather see you dead, little girl

Than to be with another man

You better keep your head, little girl

Or I won't know where I am

You better run for your life if you can, little girl

Hide your head in the sand little girl

Catch you with another man

That's the end'a little girl

Well you know that I'm a wicked guy

And I was born with a jealous mind

And I can't spend my whole life

Trying just to make you toe the line

You better run for your life if you can, little girl

Hide your head in the sand little girl

Catch you with another man

That's the end'a little girl

Let this be a sermon

I mean everything I've said

Baby, I'm determined

And I'd rather see you dead

You better run for your life if you can, little girl

Hide your head in the sand little girl

Catch you with another man

That's the end'a little girl

I'd rather see you dead, little girl

Than to be with another man

You better keep your head, little girl

Or you won't know where I am

You better run for your life if you can, little girl

Hide your head in the sand little girl

Catch you with another man

That's the end'a little girl

Na, na, na

Na, na, na

Na, na, na

Na, na, na

What is on the air and what you call 'hip-hop' is just actually basic thug west coast rap. There is a great deal of hip-hop that actually promotes unity, peace and it would tell a story. That is hip-hop, what is on the air is not hip-hop.

Jay-z, 50 Cent ect ect.... NOT hip-hop. Radio never plays the quality stuff anyways, for it has to appeal to the masses, so you get generic rap crap.

I live in the US and watch just 2 news broadcasts on weeknights when I am at home. Lou Dobbs on CNN and Bill O'Reiley on FOX. Lou Dobbs is a straight shooter who has his finger on the pulse of the American majority whereas Bill O'Reiley (Mr. No Spin Zone) who claims to be "fair and balanced" is everything but; if his guest opposes his point of view, he will cut them off in mid-sentence. He claims to be an independent but treats Republicans with respect and dismisses anything Democrat.....then says stupid things like "I asked so-and-so to come on the show but he is hiding under his desk." And oh, his reference to kool-aid is so old. Why do I watch this guy? It's kind of like passing an accident on the highway, you don't want to look but you find yourself looking anyway .
