Besides, hitting a soccar ball with your head as a youth drives your IQ downward.

Cite?

But football, there are so many variations and positions.

I can think of another activity you could say the same thing about. It too is far more exciting than football and better for you than watching besides.

It is the closest thing to gladitorial combat in the form of a game there is. In fact there more than a few people in wheel chairs for life because of football.

Wait: is this a good thing?

These are just some replies from a simple google search 'soccar heading caused brain injury':

Yes indeed sex has many positions and is very exciting, but it is not a team sport, but then neither is tennis or golf.

And no it is not a good thing that people are hurt playing football, but the fact that it has the potential for injury, as does wrestling, is part of its draw. But then, in hockey they just go and hit with weapons (high sticking).

If you had read all of those thinks, the one from the Faculty of Washington whatever points out that the number of reported injuries in soccer than are concussions is the exact same percentage as the number of injuries that are concussions in American Football.

Besides, if you want to talk about sports with brain injuries, shouldnt we be talking about boxing?

Does the New York Times cover the CFL?

Most Americans don't follow the CFL for the same reason that most Canadians don't follow European pro hockey leagues.

Many Canadians DO follow the NFL, for the same reasons that many Canadians follow European soccer leagues, and that many Europeans follow NHL hockey.

Did you guys down there get to read that I (ME!) got to take pictures of the Grey Cup -- got to touch it and read all the names? That was in early December? Did you read about it?

No.

Out of curiousity, Drea, how many *Canadian* newspapers covered your special afternoon with the Grey Cup?

No kidding. Wouldn't really expect Canadian Football to be top priority in the states. Just as your football league isn't all that important to us.

The NFL is very popular in Canada, probably more popular than the CFL. For the same reason that NHL hockey is more popular than Pee-Wee hockey.

Never watch it myself......and BTW, it is not called the Toronto Globe and Mail anymore than USA Today is called the Atlanta USA Today......

That might not be the official name, but people will always think of it that way. (tagline: "Toronto's national newspaper!")

How come no one mentione dthe glaringingly obvious: that what North Americans (for some unknown reason) refer to as "football" is dull. Not quite baseball dull, but still somewhere below a coma as far as excitement goes.

I love the NFL, as much as I love hockey. Football is different from free-form sports like hockey, soccer, or basketball, where the play is continuous. But in those sports, even though plays don't start and stop like in football, it's often a case of "there's always something happening, but not much going on." In football, each play is a miniature battle, with many different elements at work. It blends individual athleticism and teamwork like no other sport, and has an element of strategy that surpasses all other sports (unless one considers Curling to be a sport.) No other sport relies on such detailed analysis of the opponent's strengths and weaknesses, and watching how these weaknesses are exposed or corrected in the course of a game is as interesting as the athleticism. Probably more than in any other sport, intelligence, strategy, and planning affect the outcome of a football game.

It is games like the following which make for what people come to see:

Parcells was 8-1 going into the second half with a lead

This game was played in Seattle, and those people attending will be on a high for a week, at least.

SEATTLE (Jan. 6, 2007) -- All Tony Romo had to do was put the ball down and let Martin Gramatica make a short kick. He couldn't do it -- and the Seattle Seahawks are still alive in the NFL playoffs.

Romo's botched hold on a 19-yard field goal try with 1:19 left forced the Pro Bowl quarterback to scramble left, but he was tackled at the 2 and the Seahawks escaped with a 21-20 victory in the wildest of wild-card games.

"It looked like it was a pretty good snap. He was the holder all year," Cowboys coach Bill Parcells said. "We were in position to win if we could just execute the extra point."

Seattle trailed 20-13 after getting stopped on fourth-and-goal with about 6:40 to go, but rallied thanks to a Dallas fumble-turned-safety on the next snap and a 37-yard touchdown pass from Matt Hasselbeck to Jerramy Stevens on the ensuing drive.

Romo moved the Cowboys from their 28 to the Seattle 2 on a pass to Jason Witten that initially was ruled a first down before a replay showed the Cowboys were short. Dallas still had its offense on the field after being told it was fourth down, then sent in Gramatica -- who already had made kicks of 50 and 29 yards -- to win it.

At least, that was the plan.

Romo was stopped on a shoestring tackle by Jordan Babineaux. The Seahawks still had to get away from the shadow of their goal line to protect the victory, but did so right away with Shaun Alexander running through the middle for 20 yards.

F*ckin' Tony Romo. Picking the Cowboys was my one upset for the weekend.

That wasn't really a shoestring tackle at the end....

Hockey is a fantastic sport, wish I could play it. Definitely the best game to watch.

Soccer, or football for BD, is also a good watch. Not enough on TV here though, can't follow any leagues without being up at 4am so I stick to the World Cup and the occassional Gunner's match.

My interest in football (I generally only watch CFL, sometimes a NFL game) is pretty much only from my high school football days. I also played baseball at a pretty high level when I was considerably younger, so I watch the occasional Jay's game. But I left baseball because it was too slow.

Watching sports in general seems a little boring to me. I'd rather be playing them. Watching skiing, mountain biking or climbing is obviously as boring as possible. But these are, in my opinion, the most enjoyable sports out there.

I felt sorry for Romo. The cowboys MIGHT be my second favorite team - Seattle my first.

Part of me wanted to see the Cowboys go all the way just so Owens could "in your face" to the media. And I like Romo too.

The guys is a jackass, but so what? The media gets riled up anytime a player doesn't give canned answers during interviews. I like guys that stir the pot - although the spit in the face was way over the line.

It was a great game, though.

I really don't get the hate-on so many people have with Owens.

Seems like jealousy to me. He had a rough start this season but expect to seem him with the Cowboys next year, unfortunately as I'm a Redskins fan.

Ultimately, there was no need for popcorn. Ultimately, there was no show.

In his biggest game and what surely has to stand as his last game as a Cowboy, Terrell Owens caught two passes for 26 yards.

He was a nonfactor.

Bills face shot at game in Europe

By MARK GAUGHAN

News Sports Reporter

1/9/2007

The Buffalo Bills did not get any national, prime-time exposure in 2006 but they have an outside chance to get some international exposure in 2007.

The Bills are one of six teams being considered as potential home teams for a regular-season game next season in either Great Britain or Germany.

The other teams that could "host" the game are San Francisco, Seattle, Miami, Kansas City and New Orleans.

The home team would be giving up a game in its own stadium, meaning it would play only seven regular-season home games.

The Bills released a statement Monday saying they would approve if the league asked them to move a home game.

"While the NFL makes the decisions regarding the playing schedule, the Bills certainly are supportive of the international regular-season game initiative," the statement read. "If our team is selected to participate, it would be great recognition for our city in an international forum, not to mention the tremendous experience it would serve for our players, coaches and staff."

The site of the game will be announced on Monday. The two teams competing will be announced during Super Bowl week. The "visiting" team for the game will not necessarily be one of the six teams that could host the game.

Every team in the league ultimately will get the chance to go abroad under a plan approved by league owners in October. The owners agreed to take up to two regular-season games a year outside the United States, with the possible sites limited at first to Mexico, Canada, England and Germany. There will be one this coming season, and Mexico and Canada were eliminated from consideration with Monday's announcement.

New NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has pushed the idea, saying the benefits of reaching an international audience outweighed the negatives of some teams having to give up home games.

The NFL intends to plan the games so that teams will rotate over a 16-year period, with each team playing outside the country twice over that span, once as a visitor, the other as a home team. That means a team would lose one home game during that span.

In 2005, the NFL staged its first regular-season game outside the United States when Arizona hosted San Francisco in Mexico City. A crowd of 103,467 packed Azteca Stadium, the largest crowd for a regular-season game in NFL history.

When the plan was OK'd in October, Mark Waller, senior vice president of NFL International, said the international popularity of certain teams would not necessarily determine who goes abroad. He said people in foreign markets were more concerned with simply hosting a regular-season game, rather than exhibitions in which the best players tend to see little action.

NFL Europe currently consists of six teams, all in Germany.

I wonder how serious the injury to his hand is.

Couldn't read the article, but if Owens plays it'll be in Dallas.

I have a feeling he is going to end up finishing his career like Keyshawn Johnson. Maturity and losing a step physically will actually make him a better teammate.

Any predictions for the weekend?

Chicago and Baltime seem pretty safe picks. New Orleans should squeak it out over Philly.

The game with the most upset potential is New England / San Diego. Tom Brady is on and I can't think of a scarier guy to face when he is...

Chicago? SAFE BET? are you kidding? They've been sliding steadily since about week 10.

Rex grossman is anything but great. Alot of their wins came from great special teams, and their defence is suspect.

Seattle doesn't look like they're bottlnig any lighting lately either. This one's a pick - could go either way.

New Orleans should win it at home - but Philly has some magic giong on - could be another upset. I'm calling two upsets in the NFC.

I think New England will win as well - Tomlinson is amazing, but if anyone can figure out a system to stop him, it's The Genuis, Belichick. In the playoffs, until something changes yuo gotta like Belichick / Brady in the post season. OK That's THREE upsets.

I'm not sure who the favorite is but I'll take Baltimore over the colts.

The two AFC matches should be barnburners!!!! Plus OIL/FLAMES on HNIC - WHAT A WEEKEND!!!

Seattle can't compete. Gorssman could have a QB rating of 50 and the Bears will still win. Try excellent special teams and a good defence. How is Seattle going to upset them? Alexander still isn't 100% and Hasselbeck? Come on...

New Orleans should win it at home - but Philly has some magic giong on - could be another upset. I'm calling two upsets in the NFC.

I don't know if I have faith in Garcia's ability to win the big game. He's never done it beforem and this is a big stage to be on. He won the Grey Cup, but we know that it doesn't really compare...

Completely agreed. I know the Patriots have some weaknesses but I don't believe San Diego is the team to exploit them.

I'm not sure who the favorite is but I'll take Baltimore over the colts.

It's the Colts. The Ravens defence is too strong and all that hype about *how well* the Colts defence played last week is a bit overblown...

Absolutely right! Go Oilers!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade, but IMO football is the worst sport to watch live. Sorry, but without the TV graphics and color commentary, the sport simply sucks... hut hut hike, everyone crumbles on the ground followed by five minutes of repositioning and injured players... Baseball, believe it or not, is much more interesting to see live. Soccer is the best with hockey a very very close second (both live and on TV, for both sports).

I love people who start posts with *I don't mean to* or *Not to be rude, but*....

As if somehow that phrase at the start gives them license to be rude or rain on somebody's parade.

You clearly don't understand football or like it. We get that. "Crumbling on the ground"? wtf does that mean

Your not even consistent in your criticism. Complaining about the time between plays and then talking about baseball being better to watch live? Baseball takes far more time between plays then football. It is a much slower-paced sport.

Jeff Garcia played really well last night, in spite of the loss. It's hard not to cheer for the Saints, isn't it? It's kind of heartwarming that they've had such a comeback after last year was so dismal for the team and expecially for the city. It's nice that the city has something to cheer about. If the Saints win the Superbowl this year, I'll weep happy-tears in a way that I haven't done since the talking piglet rounded up the sheep.

Indianapolis really impressed me. That final drive, eating so much time by running the ball against the formidable Ravens defense, was something I bet nobody expected.

Really looking forward to the Chargers vs Patriots game. It could be a great one. I think the Chargers will win it. Too much LT. :) Remember when everybody thought Michael Vick was such a phenomenon and people doubted the Chargers for trading Michael Vick for Tomlinson and Brees? And now I doubt whether anybody would trade either of Brees or Tomlinson for Vick.

Terrell Owens is a big chump.

I am absolutely cheering for the Saints in the NFC Championship game.

Their defence was incredible. I think it was over-hyped how well they played against KC. But they proved it against the Ravens. Chargers or Patriots will be in tough against the Colts.

So far, middle fo the third quarter, it's been a pretty weak game. Two Tom Brady INTs wtf?

3:30 let in the fourth. Game has certainly picked up. Patriots starting from their 15 tied game. Woo hoo....

Remember when everybody thought Michael Vick was such a phenomenon and people doubted the Chargers for trading Michael Vick for Tomlinson and Brees? And now I doubt whether anybody would trade either of Brees or Tomlinson for Vick.

No they wouldn't. It's kinda hard to believe that Brees fell to the second round that draft year. Man, wouldn't a San Diego-New Orleans Superbowl be phenomenal?

Terrell Owens is a big chump.

Yes he does stupid stuff. But he just doesn't think things through. He trains hard and there are some reporters with an axe to grind. That overdose/suicide story this year was horribly irresponsible journalism.

Look, you're entitled to your opinion. I'm entitled to mine. It's my opinion that football is not at all interesting to see live. It's better on TV. Baseball is a much more interesting game to experience live in a good ball park. It's much more boring on TV, in my opinion. But that's just my opinion. Feel free to disagree, feel free to tell me I'm off my rocker, but your condescension is not needed. I understand football very well, thank you.

About the timing and pacing of the game, baseball is nine innings. Football is the only sport where the last three minutes last a full hour. Dull.

Oh, and if I were to be half as humorless as you, and take every post as seriously as you've taken my own expression of my own opinion, I'd point out that the proper spelling is "you're [not even consistent with your criticism]," not "your". But then, I have a sense of humor and would never be so petty. Lighten up, Francis.

The colts/patriots game is lining up to be something special. Could be the game of the year.

I'm pulling for New Orleans in Chicago - and I think they will win.

Don't know why, but I'm still not sold on the bears.

BTW weren't 3 of the four games this weekend decided in the last second or overtime? can you say EXCITING?

The NFL is by far the best pro-sports league on planet earth. Amazing parity, great spectacle, superb athletics, racous fans, brilliant television coverage, breathtaking finishes...WHAT A GAME!!!!

Something about Peyton Manning bugs me. His pre-snap antics are a bit much. What is pointing at a defender going to do? Nobody else on the O-Line can see who he's pointing at. Just bark out "mid linebacker possible blitz!" or whatever you have to do. but the pointing and all that other garbage? Showtime for sure.

Manning is an AMAZING quarterback but he bugs me.

GO PATS!

GO 'AIN'TS! (that's what the locals used to call their hapless hometeam)
