Charles Anthony Posted October 13, 2006 Report Posted October 13, 2006 Would be nice... NO!!!!! I do not want to scroll around in a "comic book" or "grocery flyer" forum. Thank you! On a practical note, images require more bandwidth and they slow things down for people who have dial-up or slow computers. Just the facts, madam. Just the facts. threnody Posted October 13, 2006 Author Report Posted October 13, 2006 Would be nice... NO!!!!! I do not want to scroll around in a "comic book" or "grocery flyer" forum. Thank you! Whaa? On a practical note, images require more bandwidth and they slow things down for people who have dial-up or slow computers. Just the facts, madam. Just the facts. And really, on a forum of <2000 members, do you think images would suck up that much bandwidth? There could obviously be an option of diabling avatars. Quote
M.Dancer Posted October 13, 2006 Report Posted October 13, 2006 I like avatars becasue you can spot favourite posters quicker with them. I especially like annoying avatars...... Quote RIGHT of SOME, LEFT of OTHERS If it is a choice between them and us, I choose us
threnody Posted October 13, 2006 Author Report Posted October 13, 2006 I like avatars becasue you can spot favourite posters quicker with them. Yes. I especially like annoying avatars...... haha Quote
Charles Anthony Posted October 13, 2006 Report Posted October 13, 2006 And really, on a forum of <2000 members, do you think images would suck up that much bandwidth?Yes. There could obviously be an option of diabling avatars. If people do NOT disable the check-out aisle magazine format, it would still be more demanding on the server. The bandwidth costs money. Transmitting text is exceedingly fast compared to images. Quote We do not have time for a meeting of the flat earth society. << Où sont mes amis ? Ils sont ici, ils sont ici... >>

threnody Posted October 13, 2006 Author Report Posted October 13, 2006 However, the board does look fairly clean with just text. It would be nice for quicker identification of users, but obviously not essential. Just thought I'd mention it. Quote
August1991 Posted October 13, 2006 Report Posted October 13, 2006 Would be nice... Seven minutes after setting up an account you're asking about avatars?Would you walk into someone's home for the first time and immediately suggest moving the furniture and repainting the walls? You're welcome to participate in the debate here - we've got posters all over the map - but I'm with Charles above. Avatars leave a cartoonish impression. And anyway, the moderator has already addressed the issue. Heck, the moderator even took down my cat poster. Quote
Higgly Posted October 13, 2006 Report Posted October 13, 2006 I agree avatars make posters easier to spot. You can limit bandwidth cost by keeping avatar size down - say 80 pixels square at a max, which is fairly standard. I wouldn't want to see what some forums do where the avatar size is either not controlled, or allows a maximum size that is too large - it makes the forum jerky to view unless you have a super graphics card and gobbles up site disk space. That having been said, I wouldn't say it should be a priority - I think the site Admin has more important things on his plate. Quote "We have seen the enemy and he is us!". Pogo (Walt Kelly).

threnody Posted October 13, 2006 Author Report Posted October 13, 2006 You're welcome to participate in the debate here... Oh well thank you so very much for giving me permission. Seven minutes after setting up an account you're asking about avatars?Would you walk into someone's home for the first time and immediately suggest moving the furniture and repainting the walls? Don't patronize me. This is not someone's home; It is an internet message board. I am entitled to hold an opinion and ask a question of the admin, not you. I see this isn't a popular idea, so be it. You do not, however, have any right whatsoever to condescend to me. Quote
M.Dancer Posted October 13, 2006 Report Posted October 13, 2006 Now that you mention it....these blue walls are kind of ...partisan coloured.......I would prefer a tartan myself. Quote RIGHT of SOME, LEFT of OTHERS If it is a choice between them and us, I choose us
Charles Anthony Posted October 13, 2006 Report Posted October 13, 2006 This is not someone's home;Actually, it is. The forum is not a public service. As members, we each have the privilege of participating but we do not have the right. Condescending? Lighten up. We take shots at each other over issues that are much more important than avatars. Forget about these avatars and this thread. Hopefully, we will all be able to laugh at it and maybe tease you about it in the future. In my bold opinion, whenever you feel seriously offended, the most important thing is to have a sense of humor even if it seems like nobody else on the forum does. Higgly Posted October 13, 2006 Report Posted October 13, 2006 I would much rather have the option of posting an image....... OK. How would you rank it in terms of priority. I'm with you on the tartan, or maybe Madras. On the other hand, there is paisley.... Quote "We have seen the enemy and he is us!". Pogo (Walt Kelly).

Forum Admin Greg Posted October 18, 2006 Forum Admin Report Posted October 18, 2006 And my "Alberta Liberal Party Headquarters" profile picture. August, Kimmy, sorry - it was a security issue. We had a hack attempt a few months ago that attempted to upload a virus through the image upload function. I was forced to clean out the user contributed images. As August pointed out, I've already addressed the avatar issue - the reason we do not allow them is (1) security (2) bandwidth and (3) it looks bad. The bandwidth is the biggest obstacle - last month we push 20 gigs of bandwidth - which if you didn't know, isn't cheap. Quote Have any issues, problems using the forum? eyeball Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 NO!!!!! I do not want to scroll around in a "comic book" or "grocery flyer" forum. Thank you! On a practical note, images require more bandwidth and they slow things down for people who have dial-up or slow computers. Just the facts, madam. Just the facts. You know what they say about the worth of a picture. Compared to the amount of time it takes to post one, or write the proverbial 1000 words... How about just one forum to store pictures in that people could link to in the normal text only threads? Like I said the value of a picture when trying to make a good point would probably make the wait worth it. You wouldn't want to see the picture Morris sent me though, you'd probably have to throw away a perfectly good keyboard if you did.
