There's a lot of shit going on this country that I don't like, but that's no reason to hate the national anthem. Unless, of course, you hate America and you wish to burn it to the ground - is that where you are comrade?

My sister was just here visiting and I told her how when I moved back home to return to college I found their 1969-1970 eras piano book and noticed she and a younger sister had re-written the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner Let's just say the bombes weren't bursting in air and not mention the rest.

She laughed at that and said not much has changed in 50 years.

Not at all. Bu on the other hand, you were taught to be so blind that a national anthem that surviving a war and worshipping your flag like some holy icon is what patriotism is.

Just like how a commercial event on the lawn of your govt that personally enriches your leader and excuses his family from outright fraud is a 'nothingburger' in your mind. How your leader can flog Bibles, pictures, gold coins, build monuments to himself and his  holdings 'in trust' are controlled by his relatives is not blatant corruption when your opinion would be different for anyone else at all.

What are you trying to say?

Look, a piece of fabric, by itself, is meaningless. But the fabric that makes up Ole Glory is representative of people and ideals that make this country great. Sure, we can look up the meanings of 13 red and white bars and the field of blue with white stars. But it goes so far beyond that. That flag represents American Exceptionalism in both concepts.

When John Winthrop gave his City On a Hill speech he coined the phrase to describe a nation that was unique in design. Never before had a nation declared that the people have rights beyond government control and that it is the government's job to defend them. That concept, coupled with Republicanism and liberty created an exception to all governments, in the Americas, that stood above them all.

It was those principles that lead to Ronald Reagan's rebranding of the term to describe the accomplishments of the American people. We had come from a fledgling country to a super power in under two centuries. We were the world's economic leader and moral compass. Our people had the greatest innovations. We visited the moon, defeated the Nazis, stared down the USSR and triumphed over our own short comings.

Through it all, the flag stood as a reminder of where we came from, what this country was founded to be and what we could still do. We were not perfect, but we marched in that direction every day. 

It is not the flag that we worship. Worship belongs to God. But we do covet the meaning, the history and the promise that the flag represents. We do not apologize for our pursuit of life, liberty and happiness or our zeal for those goals. 

Your disdain, hatred and bigotry is your flaw, not ours.

*Sigh* I mean, the last guy was funneling money through dummy corps to his family in exchange for political favors, so selling embroidered Bibles and collectors coins seems like a big improvement to me.
