Yeah, more of a slower swamp. Home to a million piranha-mosquitoes as I understand it

Who were harvesting the mosquitoes for food or something?

Don't be stupid if you can possibly avoid it.

70 plus years pf mostly sheer luck after the flood of 1948 has made that land immensely valuable today. We shouldn't think of cementing it over with condos like the Okanagan and Richmond. Especially while we're complaining about the cost of food that would all be imported.

True. We have precious little farmland especially this far south and it should be preserved and used as such. On this we agree

You obviously don't even try.

The lake used to support sturgeon, trout, salmon, grizzly bears and geese, and its wetland habitat was a destination for migrating birds and a breeding ground for both fish and waterfowl. Flocks of white-fronted goose as well as whistling swan and Hutchins geese also used the lake. Its partially sandy banks also provided for sturgeon spawning grounds. The lake supplied food to the Sumas Band, and their life ways were intimately connected to it.

In the late 1800s, the lake drew the attention of various naturalists within the growing European population engaged in the work of cataloging the flora and fauna that they encountered where they settled.

But for sure, it was probably mostly like Palestine...empty land where nothing happened. 🙄

And?

None of that changes anything I said. Literally all of that is still happening in that exact same area right now in fact, the stream right beside my house which is very close to that area is full of salmon.

And it'll be streams and rivers that the first nations take their salmon from, not a big lake :)

Nor does it change the debate around retreating in the face of worsening flooding or not.

Managed Retreat (Buyouts) ~$1 Billion Researchers (UBC) estimate that acquiring approximately 1,300 properties on the historic Sumas lakebed would cost around $956 million to $1 billion.

Infrastructure Upgrades $2.4 - $2.8 Billion The City of Abbotsford’s preferred long-term plan includes a new pump station, dike repairs, and floodways, with costs estimated up to $2.8 billion.

Recovery/Damage Costs $4 - $9 Billion Initial 2021 response and recovery costs were estimated at over $4 billion, while some later projections for total rebuilding and infrastructure reinstatement reached nearly $9 billion.

That's very true. It's still a terrible idea even with that information.

The swamp wasn't terribly useful other than in the same breeding ground for starving mosquitoes. The Farmland however is exceptionally valuable. Food security is an important thing. Being able to produce the food that you eat is critical to the first nations and other communities in the area

So you accidentally kind of made my point for me  :) We already have hundreds if not thousands of salmon streams, trout lakes, and a near infinite supply of bears but we have very very little farmland to feed our people. That includes first nations people

Best to keep the land.

Sure, so long as the cost of producing it is reflected in the price. The cost of infrastructure upgrades is a massive public subsidy compared to the benefits.

If the produce is that exceptionally valuable it should be able to meet the cost of producing it. Just raise the price or apply an infrastructure tax.

Those pearls of concern you're suddenly clutching for First Nations sure are precious too aren't they?

No, you just got big mad and want to blame me for it. :)

It doesn't sound like food security should be an issue if we have a near infinite supply of bears and salmon don't you think?

No it isn't. It's actually pretty minor. The problem is that they haven't been doing it and upkeeping it over time and now there's deferred maintenance essentially. But for the amount of food bearing land it's actually a pretty good deal. They just have to do it

They already paying infrastructure tax. Those farmers pay and have paid for many decades the tax is necessary to maintain their infrastructure. The federal provincial and local governments have a duty of care to actually address these issues and to negotiate with America who has to do their part as well.

So far this is failed to happen. It's not the farmers fault.

So you're thinking that the first nations don't deserve food? I mean I'm not surprised, you're frequently calling for the death of ethnic groups you don't like. But I think you'll find there is a little bit of a duty of care there.

Just pretend the farmers are Palestinians and the water is Jewish settlers and you'll be on side with everyone else in moments :)

Okay. Do you have any kind of analysis or study that shows why the amount of food produced is a good deal ?

We could start here...AI says...

Agricultural production in the Sumas Prairie

(located within Abbotsford, BC) contributes significantly to a regional sector that generates approximately $1 billion in annual farm gate sales. While specific isolated figures for only the Sumas Prairie portion often vary by study, its economic impact is a core driver of the broader Abbotsford agricultural economy, which is recognized as the most productive in Canada on a per-hectare basis.

I figure climate change will ultimately settle the issue, probably sooner rather than later and it'll likely cost everyone a shitwhack.

With higher food prices for sure, as for public debt...ok, I'm usually pretty meh with that anyway so. Of course people need to eat but the flooding raises the spectre of the increasingly unsustainable nature of the dilemma we're in. The importance of the area to Canada's food supply really underscores how vulnerable we already are to AGW and the worsening weather it brings.

BTW, when can we count on all this plant food we're emitting to transform Canada's vast landscape into agricultural land? I'm often told AGW will be beneficial to Canada.

Who cares anyway. BC is like Canada today, all phkd up, thanks to the leftist lieberals and the NDP communists that have allowed the problem to carry on. BC has become a communist province just like Canada has become a communist country.

The hundreds of billions of tax dollars that have and still are being blown on communist programs and agendas where instead those tax dollars should have gone to fixing many of Canadas infrastructure problems and not on net zero greenie projects or massive 3rd world immigration. Those two alone have pretty much destroyed Canada, and not to forget about all of this Indian reconciliation lies and nonsense. More tax dollars being blown for nothing. BC and Canada should cease to exist any longer. Come save us President Trump from the communist fools that have destroyed this once great freedom loving country called Canada.  Works for me.😁

Okay. So they're saying it's going to cost about $4 billion dollars to do the infrastructure necessary to pretty much guarantee no future floods. Or minor flooding at best.

That infrastructure should last about 20 years. And that's being generously short-lived.

So assuming an average interest rate of about 4% which is what inflation is right now in fact inflation is slightly higher, that's about 23 BILLION dollars in economic activity directly, plus all the secondary and tertiary activity.  On top of which you don't have to pay any money to buy up the properties or redo the transcanada.

So for a couple billion you get a massive amount of economic activity based on your figures

I figure climate change will ultimately settle the issue, probably sooner rather than later and it'll likely cost everyone a shitwhack.

Well that's pretty big. The global warming just shows that we need more and more viable arable land.

Of course people need to eat but the flooding raises the spectre of the increasingly unsustainable nature of the dilemma we're in. The importance of the area to Canada's food supply really underscores how vulnerable we already are to AGW and the worsening weather it brings.

Yeah, sure. I can't argue, that's pretty definitive proof that our food supply is a delicate thing which can be impacted by climate change substantially. But we still have to live with that because climate change isn't going away. So adaptation is obviously the direction we need to move it

Quote

BTW, when can we count on all this plant food we're emitting to transform Canada's vast landscape into agricultural land?

Plant food that we're emitting??? Are you talking about carbon? Or did your geraniums just fart.

Quote

I'm often told AGW will be beneficial to Canada.

Looks that way. We're already seeing some areas that weren't entirely viable becoming more so, growing seasons appear to be getting a little longer. It would appear that we're already beginning to benefit. 2024 was a good year

Canada's 2024 crop season saw strong production, especially in wheat (up 6.1% to 35M tonnes) and fruits (like blueberries/cranberries), with overall grains and oilseeds near 102M tonnes, despite some crop area shifts; it was a good year for quality, with high-grade wheat, though projections varied slightly by crop and province, showing resilient overall output from a diverse sector.

No, sadly mitigation is quite limited. This is already being brought up as a bone of contention, it's like we learned nothing from 2021.

I mean in some respects there's only so much you can do, the river that's flooding is in the American side of the border not ours. And all that land is supposed to be underwater, the royal engineers drained it back in the day and we still have a massive pump station complex to keep it dry. That pump station hasn't been upgraded in forever and can't keep up with the flood waters.

I think a lot of the people learned their lesson from last time and there's been a major effort to get animals and machinery to higher ground. But there's nothing you can do about the homes. Last time we had the bad flood people were literally showing up with boats to go get the cows out. and in a lot of cases it was too late. So it seems like we're better off this time or at least the farmers are.

It's bad. There's no doubt. But we'll get through it as soon as always

Sounds vaguely familiar.
