18 U.S. Code § 1651 – Piracy under law of nations

“Whoever, on the high seas, commits the crime of piracy as defined by the law of nations, and is afterwards brought into or found in the United States, shall be imprisoned for life.”

U.S. Code, Title 18, Chapter 81 criminalizes piracy and related acts, including seizure of vessels without lawful authority.

The tanker was seized on the high seas while carrying Venezuelan crude oil

If the seizure was not authorized by international law or a recognized court order, it constitutes “illegal detention and depredation” under UNCLOS.

The act of appropriating the oil (“we keep it, I guess”) suggests a private end — enrichment or political leverage — which matches the piracy definition.

Therefore, under both international law (UNCLOS) and U.S. law (Title 18, Chapter 81), such a seizure can be argued to be an act of piracy.

It turns out Vemezuela was using ghost tankers to run oil to and from Cuba. 

While the U.S. is blowing up small vessels in the Caribbean, accusing Venezuela of using them to send drugs to the U.S., a new report affirms that the government of Nicolás Maduro is using a clandestine network of oil tankers to bypass U.S. sanctions and maintain crude shipments to Cuba.

But this is not just about Venezuela. This tanker was being used by bad actors all over the world, including Iran:

The Skipper was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department in 2022 for its alleged role in an oil smuggling network that helped fund the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps and Hezbollah, a Lebanese militant group backed by Iran.

The ship — known as Adisa in 2022 — is among the vessels controlled by sanctioned Russian oil magnate Viktor Artemov, the Treasury said in a statement. At the time, the Treasury said Artemov transported Iranian oil using an expansive network of ships that were often registered in obscure ways with the intention of skirting U.S. restrictions on Iranian petroleum exports.

Even the Biden admin considered this tanker a danger to the US and the world. The seizure hurts Iran, Venezuela and Russia.

It makes no difference — he should be imprisoned for life for just a single death he caused. The 70,000 Palestinian deaths are underestimated; practical models put the number around 520,000. I do not think the Earth will sustain life long enough for him to have the chance to repent.
