Radiorum Posted January 13 Report Posted January 13 I watched the funeral of Jimmy Carter on television. One of the things that caught my imagination was the sight of Barack Obama and Donald Trump, head to head, talking and laughing together. We’re aware of the animosity between these two. The whole birther conspiracy, and Trump calling Obama “a disaster” and labelling him “ignorant” and the ‘founder of ISIS.” And as Obama campaigned for Harris, he labelled Trump a danger to America. These two have done nothing but politically tear each other down. So why the chummy interaction? 1 Quote
User Posted January 13 Report Posted January 13 Its political theater when they attack each other. Megan Kelly had a good story about her public feud with Trump that helps explain this. Quote

These two have done nothing but politically tear each other down. 1) Trump barely touched on the birther conspiracy. It was a Dem-led conspiracy for years, and Trump just got in at the very end of it. By contrast, the Russian collusion show trial lasted for years with full support from all the Dems and their media outlets, and the Dems/FBI even committed felonies pushing that garbage. You really need to stop acting like the birther thing was a big deal. 2) Obama was a disaster. His policies gave rise to islamic state, he vastly underestimated them and let them grow to a large nation and then they committed genocide, Crimea was taken over when he was president and he did nothing, and the US turned into a racially divided sh1thole mainly because of his bad leadership. 3) He labelled Trump as worse than just a danger to America. Obama's comments were beyond the pale. Quote So why the chummy interaction? Because Obama never really thought he was "orange hitler", he was just preaching to the cultist choir. This is inaccurate. While it is true that supporters of Hilary Clinton “birthed” the birther conspiracy in 2008, it was soon taken over by the right, and then Trump took that baby and turned it into a big, hairy monster. He did what he did best – exploitation. Even after Obama released his original “long-form” birth certificate in 2011 (which Trump took credit for – saying he had done a great service to the country) – Trump continued to milk the monster. In 2012, he tweeted that he had an “extremely credible source” who told him the birth certificate was a fraud. In 2013, he raised suspicion about the death of a Hawaiian official who verified copies of Obama’s “birth certificate.” In 2014, he asked hackers to access Obama’s college records and check his “place of birth.” https://www.bbc.com/news/election-us-2016-37391652 7 hours ago, WestCanMan said: the US turned into a racially divided sh1thole mainly because of his bad leadership. If racial tensions increased after Obama got elected, it was because of the simple fact that a Black man had gained the White House. If we look at American history, we’ll see that every gain ever made by Black Americans is followed by a White backlash. Blacks have historically been told to “know their place” - and faced consequences if stepping over it. It wasn’t that long ago that looking the wrong way at a White person would get a Black person lynched. “Black Success, White Backlash” is a well-known trope. From Jim Crow following the Civil war, to the White racial panic following Obama’s election. (And that panic powered Trump.) Edited January 14 by Radiorum 1 1 Quote

Yes, they categorized Obama’s statement as a lie, but suggest it was a misunderstanding, and more importantly – Obama issued a rare presidential apology for it. (Can you ever imagine Trump apologizing for any of his lies?) But I also noticed that Trump won the distinction of having “Lie of the Year” in 2024 (Haitian immigrants are eating cats and dogs), 2021 (Jan. 6 Capitol attack), 2020 (Covid downplay and denial), 2019 (The Ukraine call), 2017 (Russia meddling in US election is “made-up”), and 2015 (Trump’s campaign statements) - By December 2015, PolitiFact had rated 76% of Trump’s claims Mostly False, False or Pants on Fire. No other politician had clocked more falsehoods on our Truth-O-Meter, and our only real contenders for Lie of the Year were Trump’s. So Trump wins!! Quote

He went around the country on his big tour to push for the passage of Obamacare and almost every week, multiple times a week, he was pushing this lie. It was no misunderstanding... read your own damn link again, it was not suggesting it was a misunderstanding, they said Obama's team only made it worse trying to claim it was one when it was an outright lie. It was so egregious that after the damage was done, sure... oops, my bad. Quote
