So intelligent people care what John Oliver says because he's an astute critic of society, politics and the media who couches commentary in comedy?

Eh, they may or not care about the comedy aspect, but yes, intelligent people care about the commentary of astute critics. Mark Twain is probably the ultimate example of an astute critic who delivered much of his criticism satirically.

The idea that the justices of the SCOTUS have no ethical standards or oversight should be anathema to most people. The idea that a SCOTUS justice could be (effectively) paid to remain on the bench, or literally paid to leave the bench, should be alarming to anyone.

Clarence Thomas may be the worst offender (and it's pretty egregious), but it's not really a partisan issue. The justices should have clear standards and oversight. They've forfeited the trust we'd need to allow them to police themselves.

Lol. As a pathological liar yourself, I'm not sure your offered opinion counts for anything.

Meanwhile, Oliver is a respected journalist

He's not that at all. He's a little wanker who lies to make comedy.

The only video I ever saw of him, was him trying to say that it rained during Trump's inauguration speech, but his own video showed a clip of Melania holding an umbrella over his head. That never happened at all during his speech. It happened on inauguration day, but not during the speech.

In fact, that video of his was the reason I even got a video of Trump's inauguration speech.

There were other things he said in that video that were untrue iirc, but I couldn't find that video on a google search so I can't say for sure.

In general, when I catch someone lying like CNN, Oliver or Hodad, I completely devalue anything else that they ever say after that.

He is not a journalist in the slightest and generally doesn't pretend to be.

he's a comedian.  he often highlights real issues but frequently misreports on it (usually for comedic effect which is fair - he's a comedian).

OMG, perfect example, because it comes back to one of your favorite lies: no rain during the inauguration speech!

You are lying again now (or you've been misled by your magic TV!) because Oliver showed the image of Melania holding the umbrella over herself during Trump's speech. Because it was farking raining. It's similar to an image I showed you multiple times while you denied and denied and denied that it rained during the inauguration!

Literally anyone can click the link (56 seconds) and see that you are lying. We can all see that you're lying. So what is broken inside you that you don't even care that we can see that you're lying?

Hell, I'll even give you the screenshot, so nobody has to open a new tab to see that you're lying. There's Melania, holding the umbrella over herself while Trump is speaking.

I'm sure multi-award winning journalist John Oliver is eagerly waiting for your apology.🙄

You should devalue what you say then, since it's been proven with YOUR VIDEO that it rained during Trump's inauguration speech. I saw the rain dripping down Trump's coat jacket. Did you?

@WestCanMan as always, caught red handed for all the world to see, and no retraction, no comment, no adjustment of opinion to assign to actual facts. Just tucks tail and slinks away. -- And he'll be posting the same lies again in a week or two.

Stay, classy.🙄

A much more serious issue is that if the coming decisions are seen to be divided along the partisan lines: it would signify nothing less than the end of an impartial, non-partisan justice system. The consequences of it would be difficult to predict. Possibly, the final slide in the erosion of a functional democracy in the country. Wouldn't be much different from any oligarchic banana state.

If it's you or them, the truth is equidistant
