Rebound Posted October 1, 2023 Report Posted October 1, 2023 With California in a contested 3-way primary fight for its next U.S. Senator, Governor Gavin Newsom has stated that he will not appoint any of the candidates, leaving the voters to choose their next U.S. Senator. Instead, he will appoint a caretaker Senator who will not run for election. It’s bad enough that incumbent politicians usually get 20 or 30 year runs, but it would be terrible for democracy if this seat is selected by one person. Newsom has decided to let the voters make their choice for Senator and it’s the right thing to do. Quote @reason10: “Hitler had very little to do with the Holocaust.”

Even if he appoints a Senator to fill the spot, the voters will still choose the next Senator when the term ends next year. Quote

Yes, but if he appoints Schiff or Porter, they would get an insurmountable incumbency advantage. Quote @reason10: “Hitler had very little to do with the Holocaust.”
Aristides Posted October 1, 2023 Report Posted October 1, 2023 She was up for re election next year so as long as he picks a temp who won't be running, it seems to be the right thing to do. Quote

Feinstein said she wouldn’t run for re-election (at what would be the age of 91). So the seat is open and Katie Porter and Adam Schiff are strong competitors for the spot. If the Governor appoints one of them, they’ll become an incumbent and have a big advantage over the other in next year’s election. But Newsom said he will only appoint someone who will not run for the seat. Quote @reason10: “Hitler had very little to do with the Holocaust.”

Feinstein’s Replacement Will Be Free to Run in '24 Quote Gov. Gavin Newsom’s appointee to the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s Senate seat, Emily’s List President Laphonza Butler, will be free to run for a full term in 2024, and there will be no precondition that this is a temporary replacement. Seems like Doublecross Newsom might not want to elevate a stronger political contender, to protect his prospects for POTUS. Quote

I don’t know what the filing deadlines are but it would be difficult for someone to just start raising the $30 or $50 million it would take just like that.
