WHY DO the federal Liberals so often behave as though they no longer must accept responsibility or accountability?

Martin's hypocrisy again was shown by his announcing in his first budget of February 1994 that he would tighten the regulations allowing Canadian companies to bring dividends of foreign affiliates back to Canada tax-free from a number of countries. But Barbados remained exempt. This allowed Canadian companies, including CSL, to avoid hundreds of millions of dollars in Canadian taxes by moving their foreign affiliates to Barbados.
Ok - so why was Barbados exempted? It is easy to assume that it must have been because of CSL, however, we can't know this for sure unless we know what other countries enjoy this status. For example, do the same rules apply to the US? How about Ireland which has no corporate tax at all? If Ireland and the US are also exempted then you can hardly claim special treatment for Barbados.

The article mentioned that there was a tax treaty in place with the Barbados which implies that the Barbados must provide the Canadian gov't with tax information about Canadians paying tax in the Barbados. It is possible that the Barbados threatened to cancel the treaty if Canada changed the rules and the Canadian gov't decided that the information provided by the Barbados gov't was worth keeping the treaty in place. This is speculation but the fact is these questions need to be answered before you can draw any conclusions about the motivation behind the tax treatment of Barbados companies.

To fly a plane, you need both a left wing and a right wing.

Isn't this more about a politician making a ruling so his family's company could use the ruling for financial benefit?

Oh poor Sparhawk, your agrument isn't even an agrument.

Martin's action did close certain tax havens, such as Liberia: CSL subsequently moved seven Liberian-registered ships to Barbados, where the tax haven continued.

There is no response to the Liberals, especially Martin, they are so corrupt there is no way you can convince me that I should vote for them!

Well it looks to me like there is all sorts of support from respectful media that Martin is cheating and that retractors here have no real ground to stand on except their seeming hated of Conservatives.

Yeah, but all rightwing news sources are embarrassments and full of lies. CP supporters are only supposed to trust leftwing media sources. After all, the leftwing media's credibility is at an all-time high!

P.S. You aren't supposed to post entire articles on this forum.

Off subject but... Shoop...One enters Paul Martin and CSL in Google and guess what? Somewhere in the list of articles available is one from Canada Free Press, about loopholes, etc. and seemed to fit into the "discussion" about Mr. Martin. As for your comment about "right wing hacks" who regularly read Canada Free Press..I assume you are including me, due to the article ...you have crossed the line. People have the freedom to read whatever they want...and that includes Canada Free Press as well as any other site that produces things of interest. What people read is of no concern of yours.

By the way, I read the Toronto Star but that does not make me a Liberal supporter and I also read the Toronto Sun, among other newspapers..which does not make me a supporter of the CPC, either, at this juncture. I do not "regularly" read the site you commented on but I certainly will be perusing it ,now.

Also, the comment about partisan, ignorant columnists ....they are on both sides. As for the mention of character assassination, one need look no further than Political Forums that refer to Stephen Harper as Harpo, bozo etc. I don't see you, Eureka, getting on your soap box about that. Interesting....

Also, as to the remark about posting full columns - gotcha. However, if one spends the time to check other areas one would notice a fair number of newspaper articles and full columns. Guess the full columns that point out "failings" of the current government and it's leader are not allowed. Dully noted.

Besides not posting cited columns, dividing your post into paragraphs, perhaps even with spaces between the paragraphs, would strengthen your otherwise strong message.

Much thanks for your advice on posting procedures and the proper way to form one's postings.

Unfortunately, when I first created my post, after viewing it with spaces, it was inordinately long...even I was bored reading it... I "scrunched" it up to make it appear less "cumbersome" to read.

I will be very careful about posting anything that causes problems in the future.

Hope that meets the standards of this site.

Why would I get on a soapbox about someone calling arper, Harpo. For all I know, that may be his nickname and I could not care less. Since I do not spend my life trailing around political forums, I would also not know that he is called that in some; he doesn't seem to suffer from that particular problem here.

Of course, Harpo is as pejorative as accusations of tax fraud or influence, isn't it? Poor Stevie must be suffering terribly in comparison to what is being said of Martin.

This whole thing is sick and says little for those who pursue Martin with these calumnies. I could give more on the reasons for moving from Liberia to Barbados OR one of the others with whom we do have tax treaties but I won't. This particular "discussion" disgusts me.

Accusations of tax fraud and influence are among the best weapons in the CPC arsenal just as Stephen Harper is the best weapon in the Liberal arsenal. :)

Hey normie, how's it going? Still campaigning hard for the Liberals I see. Good for you! One suggestion, though. In your comments, often contain inaccurate digs at the party leader you are campaigning against, in your case, Harper. The effort here is twofold: trying to convert the simpleminded by shear weight of repetition and getting the other side to respond, soas to give yourself reason to then further distribute your ideology.

It's a delicate touch because you don't want to be strident enough to be accused of trolling, and yet it is trolling after a fashion. See what I mean? Try practicing it first to ensure you get it right. And then you should be able to post 30 - 40 times a day, way more than otherwise possible.

Keep up the good work! :)

And to answer this series of "how is it different" questions:

How is this different than Royal Dutch/Shell, which operates in 140 different countries and has autonomous companies that pay local taxes in each country? How is this different than Scotiabank, which has had branches in the Caribbean since the 1890s that operate under companies like Bank of Nova Scotia Jamaica Limited (and pay Caribbean taxes)? What about car companies like Toyota Canada?

Answer: because none of those companies are owned by Paul Martin or his family. That is the difference.

The government should do something.

One does not have to spend one's life perusing other political forums to find denigrating terms aimed at Harper and Martin - incredulous as it may seem - but they are, in actuality, "here."

Such disparaging remarks as dope peddler and pious weasel for Harper and schmuk, slime, lying snake used to describe Martin...they were some of the colloquialisms used to describe the two.

Now I would like to point out that not once, in any way, have I used such terms to describe either Martin or Harper, unlike others, dope peddler coming to mind.

Reading your post I discovered that, as usual, oleaginous remarks are the forte of the acrimonius poster.

One other thing........Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.... :)

You may find that your margarine will more likely stick to you. You know all the terms, apparently, but how you learn them is a mystery since you "don't look for them."

I never use them preferring to deal with policies and issues.

If you want to mix it up with me, you should read a little more of what I do get involved in. I don't see you as much of a challenge.

eureka: Far be it from me to want to mix it up with you..what a childish, petulant retort. You are a real piece of work. Hope you have a wonderful christmas, anyway. You, sir, madam or whatever you are, have absolutely no sense of humour. Take a bloody valium..

No, not at all. It's just that it is against the rules of the forum and you have to be careful because one poster here likes to go and snitch to the Administrator when someone does post full articles. Just don't want you or Lovecanada to get in trouble. :)

I'm not sure if there is a set amount of what can be posted here, but to use invaluable writer/blogger Michelle Malkin as an example:

The copyright to all material on this site is held by Michelle Malkin. Permission is granted to other web sites to reproduce up to four paragraphs per entry, provided that a hyperlink to the full entry at michellemalkin.com is included. Seems pretty reasonable to me.

P.S. I agree there is nothing wrong with CanadaFreePress. Sometimes they report things that the liberal MSM liberal "forgets" to report. Plus they have articles from the Opinion Page of the highly credible Wall Street Journal.

I really enjoy it when people who have only been in these forums a couple of days make sweeping generalizations about the state of the discussions and the quality of the moderation.

I can't possibly read every thread and post, so if you see a violation of the rules, use the Report this Post feature so I can be notified.

Subtle accusations of bias are a favorite of mine too. I love to hear how I'm biased against nearly everyone!

I think you are doing something right when you are accused of bias from both ends of the spectrum.
