Aristides, and at the cost of some 55,000 American lives.

Is the life of one Vietnamese the same as an American?

======

In 1979, Deng Xiao-Peng concluded that China must change course.

In 1984, I travelled in China. Why? Because of Vietnam. America won the larger war.

BTW, I have been to Vietnam recently. People are free to trade and travel.

Fake history?

No, not fake history.

You guys won. The Berlin Wall has fallen. Vietnam and China use the market system.

What's next?

====

Since 1990 or so, I fear that many American politicians are suffering an existential crisis

Who is the next competition?

Actually that works out to 25.5 Vietnamese lives for every American life.

This sounds terrible to say but I reckon that's a good number.

A few years ago, I was in Hue, Vietnam. An older man - about my age - approached me saying that he could explain everything. To my regret, I said no.

====

Aristides,

Make no mistake: Ordinary people in Vietnam (South or North) now are far better off than people in North Korea.

America won the war for us all.

Good if you weren't Vietnamese.

If the ordinary people of Vietnam are better off 50 years after the North won, kind of makes the war pointless.

Even if they did, 1.4 million Vietnamese paid for it with their lives.

How many Vietnamese live better now than the people in North Korea?

====

Make no mistake: 50,000 Americans made this possible.

Deng Xiao-Peng  too.

And Thatcher and Reagan.

This is a question for many families (mothers) around the world.

Vietnam? Britain? Dunkerque?

America fought abroad to defend freedom - then, Americans went home.
