Yes...could go four years with enough extensions.

I don't believe it. Sounds like horseshit to me. Especially any notion this bailout contains these provisions for every American worker laid off by this virus.

Believe whatever you want....unemployment benefits are routinely extended in the U.S.

Easier to do because the fund is paid by employer taxes (FUTA/SUI).

Routinely?  To everyone that's laid off? Any examples or statistics on how many times and how many people have benefited from these routine 4 year extensions?

Now why am I fairly certain we're going to be treated to examples of something along the lines of an educational exemption granted to a quadriplegic or something?  You're really willing to take Shady's place in this silly corner you two are painting around?

Everyone who qualifies...the state and federal unemployment benefits programs have built in temporary and permanent extension features that have been invoked in the past.    Since workers lose/gain employment throughout the year, the base and extended payments go on all the time.  It is not limited to 4 years.

In 2009 -2010, some people got 99 week extensions.

I am not taking anyone's place, but I do find it comical that you want to argue with another Canadian about unemployment benefits in a foreign country.

The U.S. has many different support programs for the unemployed that go on for years, depending on eligibility and requirements.   Varies by state too.

So what ?

Looks like its limited to less than 2 years to me.

No, the time limits are adjusted based on employment and economic circumstances.

The state and federal programs have built in extension provisions.

Why are you so hard done by on this issue....is it better than pogey ?    Jealous ?

In any case this crisis could easily result in massive economic dislocation lasting 4 years or more.

So why not extend benefits as long or were you just expecting/hoping for a sink or swim recovery?

I have provided actual data...you have only provided the usual rotting fish heads from the sea.

Because benefits are extended incrementally based on employment levels and funding, same as always.

How long will be determined based on the actual recovery, not guesses from Canada.

You provided data that says these extensions were cancelled in 2013. If they're back then I guess its safe to assume some expert must think this might last well beyond Easter.

Sigh...

This is the bill’s crown jewel. The provision will:

• Increase standard weekly unemployment benefits by $600 for the next four months.

You have provided nothing.   You are arguing with an American who has actually used his state's unemployment benefits, has lived through several recessions in country, pays federal and state taxes on benefits, and has read summaries of the new legislation.

These programs existed long before coronavirus, and multiple extensions were granted based on economic circumstances.

Again, why does it matter to you in Canada ?    How much pogey do you get in BC and for how long ?

$525 max per week for a year at best. Never for four years straight without a break. Ever.

You guys sound like a bunch of hard-boiled commie tit-suckers compared to us.

That's why I love this forum.

Some members go off the deep end for U.S. topics even when provided the American search tools, American social media, direct links, and history

It's as if arguing about American things is more exciting and relevant than arguing about Canadian things.

Watching this dynamic just never gets old for me.....thanks !

That's too bad....$525 in Canadian dollars...not USD.

Yeah but we'll very likelybe recovering from this in four months while you guys spend 4 years fighting your 2nd civil war.

If you thought the US was Canada's premier source of comic relief before you haven't seen anything.

The U.S. will remain Canada's premier source for lots of things just as before, regardless.

Maybe that's why you pay so much attention to what Americans are doing...including Trump.

...because it matters more.

Yup and I'm pretty sure that dingbat you're sharing the corner with couldn't agree more.

Great...then it's hail to Trump and your realization that you can't do anything about him...or America.
