Tablets & Touchscreens

Recommended Posts

Microsoft's discontinuation of Window's 7 and forced use of Windows 10 has resulted in a big change in how we get things done around here and I've inherited my wife's Surface Pro, she tried but just couldn't stomach the thing anymore so she gets the rebuilt Desktop PC and l don't. She also gets all the wires and dust bunnies and I have a lot more room on my desk.

Its like a Chromebook on steroids. It opens and works like a laptop in desktop mode but with a touchscreen. The keyboard detaches from the thing and becomes a real tablet. I've been struggling with its sensitivity but coming to grips with it. I've had to adjust to touchscreens on boats going 30 knots switching between radar and plotter so I'm getting better. Nothing like touching something you shouldn't and having the radar suddenly switching to the configuration page or the porn channel some scurvy crewman was watching.

I use Excel a lot and that's been the biggest challenge. I never liked the touchpad on laptops and I used a mouse whenever I had to.  Excel without a mouse is a PITA and while the Surface Pro will support a mouse it also uses a touch pen that I just used to write this post. Its a pretty cool setup. I can see being able to write faster than I can type with practice and it also swypes but l can't right click with my finger so....

I use windows 10 on my desktop (which I prefer) and no issues, I did install the 'Classic Menu' though which makes it a lot like Windows 7 with the start menu and all.

I also use my Samsung tablet but it's pain to post links, at least on here,  MLW seems to be the only site that doesn't let me copy and paste with a tablet.   My son has a surface which he likes, he brought it with him over the holidays.   If and when my desktop dies I might get one.

How do you think it would work for someone who has pretty bad tremors?  Does the touch pen increase accuracy compared to a finger?

You might steady the pen by resting your hand on the edge of the screen.  I definitely have an easier time controlling what the tip of the pen touches than my fingertip.  Think about the little fill handle on a spreadsheet cell for example. My stupid finger is just too big.

I'm oldshcool... I use a gaming desktop... I can't stand phones or tablets. I like a big screen, and a big keyboard.

Laptops overheat and breakdown. I had my desktop custom built, with plenty of fans.... I play video games in 4k.

By the way... if any of you want a new phone, go with www.aliexpress.com

You can get something almost as good as an iphone for $300.

You just have to make sure... the frequency is compantible with your carrier. You can check online. I can't run mine in 4G LTE, o well.... It still connected with 3g. I only use WIFI caz I hate paying for data. The cell signal is great.

I only pay $35 a month to be able to call and text.... If I want WIFI, i'll go to starbucks or whatever.

The phone I have lasts about 2.5 times longer than the new Iphone... It's supper fast, and super stable... The only drawback is the Camera. It'a maybe 60% as good as the iphone.

By why pay $1500, when you get a phone with a 6 inch screen for $300?

I really like the xiaomi brand... They last a long time. Their flagship is just as fast as the iphone, but half the cost... and the batteries last way longer.

I never let the battery go lower than 50%, that way it will last for years.

With the stupid iphones, the batteries drain within a day... so people run them, until their empty... and end up buying a new iphone every 2 years... I think it's planned obsolescence... otherwize they would build them with removable batteries that can easiley be replaced. Anyways, I'm boycotting Apple....

They were caught infecting old phones with viruses, to slow them down on purpose... so people would get frusterated, and buy a new one. Apple will never make a dollar off me. I'm not knocking you if you have an iphone, just don't spend $1500 again... when you want a new phone.

Well, I'm starting to appreciate why my wife couldn't stand using this Surface Pro...sure a buggy POS, crashes lots...needs to reboot half a doz times a day to bring the cursor back...blecch

Goodbye Microsoft I'm getting a Chromebook.  I don't know if its Windows 10 or if Microsoft goes out of its way to make using google apps on their OS difficult but It's just to much of PITA.

I am a bit paranoid but I'm always afraid to upgrade anything on my laptop. This started after one accident in 2019 when I lost all the data from my computer. I had to ask data recovery services for help as I was writing my thesis at that time and everything was very important. I don't want to scary anyone. I just want to warn you and remind you to be careful.

I've serviced computers for over 40 years from Commodore Vic20s to 64s, Amigas, Windoze boxes, Macs and Linux server banks. Closed my storefront 8 years ago and still work out of my home.

If you ask I question I might be able to help. I won't call you names, I work with so many seniors so I hold it all in dealing with computer stuff. Just don't ask about gaming, I stay away from that. Business & home productivity stuff mainly.

Run at home w an iPhone, iPad, older Mac mini, Windows 11 laptop, Win10 Ryzen desktop and a Raspberry Pi to play with and an Ubuntu backup server.

Biggest piece of advice I'll give you is buy an external drive and back your shit up at least monthly. Documents, Pictures, Music - the OS can be reinstalled easily. Kinda sick of everyone waiting until their system is completely FUBAR and asking me to fix it by tomorrow.

2nd is don't buy X because it's "cheaper than Y" and the brand name means SFA

3rd the idiot at BestBuy doesn't know shit, he sells vacuums on Monsay, TVs on Weds and computers on Saturday. He's pushing that Antivirus just to make an extra $2 commission.

Go ahead and ask, I've been at this game as long as Bill Gates has.

Gorilla arm. Jobs hated the touch screen on laptops.

My rich Anglo students in Montreal invariably have a Macbook - as Americans at conferences abroad typically do.

I happen to have a Surface Book 3. Visual Studio works better. I like being able to touch the screen, and detach it.

Monthly? No.

But I agree that you should back "your shit up".  Nowadays, the cloud will keep all this, uh, stuff. Assuming that you have no problem with Siri/Google knowing everything about you.

Herbie misses a major point (like Siri/Google and even Microsoft), don't overwrite a backup. Sometimes you deleted stuff but you want to find it again. Keep old back-ups.

Too much memory?

Our place in the world/universe is remarkably small.

Which is exactly why I say back it up yourself to an external. And obviously if you're doing business stuff do it weekly or even daily. I have a NAS but the average user who can't find a start button or tell if they're on their Desktop or a web browser (what's that?) wouldn't know what a NAS is and only needs to back up the pictures of their grandbaby doing a faceplant into the birthday cake once in a blue moon.

And BTW spend $30 on a labeller. Just came back from a bookkeeper who had a whole bucket of USB sticks. I think that company was on a red one...

BTW IMHO tablets and touchscreens are toys. Get a real computer if you want to do real work. I've touched my laptop touchscreen maybe 5 times in 3 years, and run into dozens of tablets unuseable with no mouse alternative. And I laugh about the mechanic that spends as much time wiping grease off his tablet as he does reading it.
