EU targets Harley Davidsons, peanuts, bourbon, orange juice.

The trade war is on — and Trump voters are the target

Jun 22 201

The European Union’s robust retaliatory tariffs came into force Friday on $3.2 billion of U.S. goods designed specifically to inflict pain on Donald Trump’s political base in the American heartland.

Very interesting concept.

Hmm...

LOL you call that war?

Our economy is over 20 trillion. Do you realize how small 3.2 billion is? That's the price it cost to build a suburban shopping mall. I mean maybe in a tiny European nation that sounds big like the entire year's gdp.

We are not an export dependent economy,  .

Our economy is the envy of the world.

80 percent of our GDP is services not physical goods exchange.

"There are more jobs than people out of work"

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/06/05/there-are-more-jobs-than-people-out-of-work.html

"The US economy suddenly looks like it's unstoppable
Friday's economic data provided evidence the U.S. economy is heading into the second half of 2018 with strong momentum.
Nonfarm payrolls beat expectations while manufacturing and construction indexes both showed accelerated growth.
Economists are slowly ratcheting up expectations for growth through the end of the year, with widely followed measures putting the second quarter at between 3.6 percent and 4.8 percent."

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/06/01/the-us-economy-suddenly-looks-like-its-unstoppable.html

GDP by sector
Agriculture: 0.9%
Industry: 18.9%
Services: 80.2%

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_the_United_States

In economics, a service is a transaction in which no physical goods are transferred from the seller to the buyer.

This is important, soon automation will take over and almost all physical goods will be manufactured by robots so trade import/export are no longer necessary.

You need to move your economy into the service sector which we have been doing since the 60's .

Stop pouting like a child Canada and EU, take your medicine, you're only hurting your self.

Free trade is good for you more than us so get on board the Trump economic train.

It's not the size of the impact, it's the targeting that is interesting:

In making up their own list of products to tax, EU leaders sought to make a point to US President Donald Trump and his supporters that protectionism carries a price.

Among the items now subject to high taxes when entering the EU: bourbon whiskey from Kentucky, the home state of US Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell.

Harley Davidson motorcycles and artisan cheese, both of which are produced in Wisconsin, the home state of Republican House speaker Paul Ryan.

And orange juice - one of the most important crops in Florida: a swing state whose Republican governor, Rick Scott, is in a tight race for a Senate seat.

https://www.aljazeera.com/programmes/insidestory/2018/06/eu-slaps-tariffs-world-trade-war-inevitable-180622153429238.html

Picking off Republican states one by one. Trump voters are going to feel the consequences of their own malice.

Harleys, bourbon, peanuts and poker (playing cards). Sounds like a southern boys-night-out just took a hit! Lol

I just have a droll appreciation for the irony of the EU's creative approach!

I hope Trudeau comes up with some similar ideas.

:D

And btw ... we are not in need of the Trumptard's "medicine". He's an idiot manchild that a bunch of other angry  idiot menchildren set loose to create chaos where none was needed.

Once again, the tariff trump is imposing will hurt Canada and EU ALOT more than it will hurt us over here. If I was in your shoes I'd be worried. Your economy is slowing down not increasing.

You do realize that most of these businesses they are targeting only affect a minority of the population in those states right? They're normally ran a few farm collective.

Second you're thinking that Americans don't already buy these item, they'll just get it cheaper since there is an increase in supply.  Cheaper bourbon, cheaper Harley sounds like they're doing us a favor...

Canada is the top international destination of exports for 36 different states.

...

Exports to Canada, by % Exports to Canada, by $ Rank State Exports (%) Rank State Exports ($) #1 North Dakota 82.5% #1 Michigan $23.7B #2 Maine 47.5% #2 Texas $20.0B #3 Montana 46.7% #3 Ohio $19.2B #4 Michigan 43.3% #4 California $16.2B #5 Vermont 39.7% #5 Illinois $15.9B #6 Ohio 39.0% #6 New York $15.0B #7 Missouri 37.6% #7 Indiana $11.5B #8 South Dakota 37.1% #8 Pennsylvania $10.0B #9 Indiana 33.2% #9 Tennessee $8.7B #10 Wisconsin 31.4% #10 Kentucky $7.5B

On average, 15.0% of all U.S. international trade is with Canada - but as you can see above, some states are clearly more reliant on this trade than others.

Right and how many of those dollars do you think is going to be tariffed, because  from what I understand you're going to either commit economic suicide to match trump's tariff or we simply start production on steel and aluminium which is what trump has been trying to do all this time.

You can already produce steel. You just can't produce enough or as cheaply. Since you are now going  pay substantially more that makes you increased military budget slashed because you get far less far more cost./

Of course it will hurt Canada more. We are a smaller country that relied on a historical trust relationship. The question is why do you want to hurt Canada.

By the way check the power Grid.

Most Canadians always believe that it is always the other country that is the problem and at fault. Our dear leader politicians brought this problem on many many decades ago. When a country puts a 270% tariff on dairy products all to appease Quebec then you know that someone here in Canada does not want to play fair ball. Tariffs need to be abolished and let the best man/woman win in the markets and business game. The government only screws up and makes things worse rather than better. Just saying.

Trump's tariffs play has lees to do with the actual import taxes and far more to do with busting up the status quo.   Canada and the EU already had plenty of tariff and non-tariff barriers to American exports, so these are nothing new.   U.S. autos were already taxed at 10% by the EU.

President Trump wants to force changes and concessions that will reduce the U.S. trade imbalances with many nations.   Canada has a lot more to lose if NAFTA goes away.

Canada will remain far more dependent on export trade to the USA, and this should have been addressed long before Trump came along.   Now Canada finds itself very vulnerable to a trade war with the world's largest economy.    Canada is not the #1 customer for 35 states...Americans are.

The U.S. does not exist to benefit the Canadian economy.

Canada imports about 1 million bpd of oil and distillates to the east from the USA, mostly because Canada has consistently failed to build east-west pipeline and refinery infrastructure, and it is even more difficult to do so now given their divisive politics and tree huggers.

Two can play at the power grid game.

But there are so many Canadians who believe that we Canadians do not need no stinkin' America to survive. Bad thoughts.  LOL.

That's why I like what Trump is doing here....stripping away all the false pretenses and double talk.

For many Canadians it has always been:  HATE the Americans, but LOVE the American economy and Yankee investment.

Canadians? Always out to kick themselves in the ass. Canada could create thousands of new jobs if it were not for the tree huggers and the native Indians who are always out to try and stop progress and who would prefer not to have any new pipeline or refinery infrastructure being built in Canada. Here in Canada a tiny minority of tree lovers and Indians always get to run and rule over the majority. It would appear as though they would like to send Canada back to the good old 18th century way of life and living where the chopping of wood was needed to try and keep warm. I don't think that those same anti-everything people will like to see all of those trees being cut down. What about the birds? LOL.

We can thank the left wing liberal Canadian MSM for all the hatred that has been spewed and heaped on America by those fools, especially now that Trump is the new sheriff in town. They cannot seem to get enough of bashing Trump. But what can one expect from a bunch of crybaby losers. The only way that Canadians who care really and want to know as to what is really happening in America is to try and listen to FOX news for a change. FOX will not bite and they come up with some pretty good answers and reasons as to why the liberal lying and fake MSM hates America and Trump so much and want to see Trump fail on everything. America is lucky to have a leader like Trump. And then there is the feminist prime mistake of Canada. LOL.

270% Tarifs is because America subsidizes its dairy to the tune of 20 billion. That’s why it’s not free trade.
