But the economically-illiterate conservative party is against that and make the ridiculous claim that CO2 emission taxes have zero impact of CO2 emissions. The most economically way to reduce emissions is to transition to nuclear power. Next door to Chalk River, the are already working to build small portable reactors to replace diesel generators in northern communities. Electrify the rail system and public transit and we can drastically reduce our emissions. Jack up the price of carbon and use the revenue to help finance the new infrastructure. If we are going to be re-building the rail system and building nuclear power plants across the country, the governments will need money. A bureaucratic nightmare to govern rationing would be expensive. Carbon taxes, if they are steep enough, will work, and they rely on the free market to work. They have already been shown to be effective in BC. The sooner we start cutting oil production, the more oil we will have for the future. Sorry for the thread drift. They're working on "truck size" thorium reactors that can provide power to smaller communities up to 20,000 people. Thorium does away with most, if not all of the drawbacks of Uranium. I suppose it's possible this breakthrough will fall under the radar because of it's clear ability to eat into the oil market. But then again - maybe that's just a far-fetched conspiracy theory - tin foil stuff. 1 Quote
-1=e^ipi Posted June 13, 2018 Author Report Posted June 13, 2018 Maxime Bernier has been kicked out of the Conservative Shadow Cabinet over this issue. Earlier this week there was a motion to support the dairy cartel. It received unanimous consent as Maxime Bernier chose to leave the house of commons during the motion. Quote

capricorn Posted June 17, 2018 Report Posted June 17, 2018 (edited) There is a federal byelection in Chicoutimi, Québec tomorrow. The Conservative candidate, Richard Martel, is ahead in the polls.Leading up to the vote, Trudeau and his Liberals spread federal cash around in the riding hoping for a Liberal win. Quote Politics being politics, however, and with Quebec being Quebec, this byelection was not without its overt pork-barreling. It is no coincidence, after all, that Trudeau set the date for Monday’s byelection three days after he pledged $60 million in taxpayers’ money to go towards a new $558-million prototype aluminum smelting project in the area, purportedly the first carbon-free smelter the world has ever seen. This was followed, of course, by a queue of Liberal cabinet ministers and MPs heading into the riding to dish out millions of dollars in interest-free loans to less-corporate businesses in the region. Quebec politics as usual, as they say. If you can’t beat them, buy them. http://torontosun.com/opinion/columnists/bonokoski-if-it-smells-like-pork-there-must-be-a-federal-byelection-in-quebec We've seen this movie before. There are many dairy farmers in the riding. Perhaps this has something to do with Scheer booting Bernier from the front bench to assure those farmers supply management is protected by the Conservative party. It seems that all of these parties in other countries can run on platforms that include abolishing supply management and win. Why is Canada so different? Because, very much unlike Oz and the Kiwis, Canada is full of Canadians. Also, NOBODY listened to Sir Roger Douglas over 25 years ago when he came here to give some friendly and extremely intelligent (and experienced) advice as to how policy affects economies. You also have to remember that for NZ to pull its collective head out of its subsidizing ass it took total economic collapse (even worse than the that Ontario will suffer from the "benefits" of Wynne).
