Listining to CBC on the way in, they are evacuating the city, which is about 50,000 people. terrible.

Fires are literally burning along side of the road as the cars are filing out of town. The damage is going to be catastrophic.

Numerous thoughts come to mind over this:

Hoping no people are harmed, sad that many animals and pets likely will be.

Already tired of the climate change wankers wanking on this. Yes, I believe in human made climate change. Not the right time to be making petty comments about this (but go ahead, it's a free country, I prefer to look like a dick by dancing on Nancy Reagan's grave instead so who am I to judge and to each their own).

The damage is going to be enormous. Wondering what the insurance bill is going to be?

One thing that interests me is the donations for this.

As someone who has the "6 times monthly earnings" set aside for emergencies and who is insured for things like fires I don't have much sympathy for those who have been making good dough over the years.

Not to say that there are not worthy causes in this case. Just like we are not supposed to give money to hostage takers because it only encourages more hostage taking, well, then using such logic why give to anyone here unless it is to help reimburse them for their deductible?

Moral hazard is what these types of people talk about - usually using insurance as the example of it when, in fact, it is supporting the uninsured that is the problem....or so the strained logic goes.....

Another thing that really interests me on this is viewing it on Twitter/Periscope.

The best way to get live videos and instant news, imo. A big reason why I no longer watch nor read much MSM because we get it better elsewhere.

They're surrounded by forest, the winds are high, and it's been a dry spring. There have always been forest fires and that area always has a high risk of a disaster like this when conditions are dry. I guess you could say the dry conditions are a direct result of climate change, but that's kind of a stretch. The Prairies have always had wet and dry extremes.

it's been more than just a single 'dry spring'... coupled with the record high early May temperatures. Alberta and BC have a record number of wildfires for this time of year. Simply stated, we now have the real temperatures coming forward and not being muted/masked by El Nina events; events that have been experienced at abnormally higher rates over this past decade. Rather, this strong full-blown El Nino event is still hanging in and acting to amplify temperature and dry conditions. And... throw in related spruce/pine-beetle forest devastation (warmer winters) in related areas and viola!

I guess it's okay to get government money under these circumstances but not others?

My feelings are mixed - yes it is a disaster. Yes insurance and prudent savings should mean the state is not needed other than to fight the fires and other types of services.

In the meantime, we all know a ton of money will get donated - most of it will go to good causes (in my view) but much of it won't (in the "right" person's view).....

But where are they to fight for personal responsibility?

What's really troubling is that I bet a lot of the properties there were where many of the now unemployed had their wealth. How much they'll get from a pile of ash is heartbreaking considering the job losses out there.

How much carbon is being released into the atmosphere right now in this fire- an annual and routine event of course throughout Canada and this fire is one of 32 burning in Alberta today?

There are a fair number of people who have lost their job, their home and all their belongings recently. Latest I have heard is that 1600 homes and businesses have suffered some or total damage. Also in the latest count is that the tally of them that hate Waldo is zero.

20,000 expected to be in Edmonton soon, today and in the next couple of days. I have a couple of spare bedrooms available and a lot of food.

I addressed the wildfire and related climate change facets contributing to it... thanks for, in kind, highlighting the impact on carbon release and reinforcing the number of current provincial wildfires. It certainly calls to attention the early start... earliest?... of wildfires. Good on ya.

I'm not whining about paying for their losses although I admit to some mixed feelings (as I always do when it comes to uninsured people - but in the end I "enable" them by giving a donation...).

I am wondering where the "right" wing people are who demand this sort of thing under different circumstances.
