Canada has had a lot of racist immigration policies historically. In this case there was a policy to the effect that Asiatic immigrants had to have $200 dollars. The immigrants believed they were exempt as British subjects. Our answer was to threaten to kill them all if they didn't leave. Your post(s) only seem to epitomize your own understanding of things. I was talking about patterns and ideologies but you seem to talk in terms of individuals. Patterns and ideologies are just things - how individuals weave them together is what counts, same as unravelling them does. As far as I know, Sikhs,native Indians,Asians Japanese and gawd only knows who else have received an apology for what happened to them in the past. Why should anyone be demanding an apology or compensation from other Canadians when those same people were not even born yet. What happened in the past is not my problem. I was not around back then. Now what I would like to see is an apology from the federal government for wrongs being done by the francos against the Anglophones in quebec in their denying the Anglos their equal rights to be able to post signs in their English language only. The francos are never denied their rights outside Quebec. The feds would go ballistic if that were to happen. Quote

From my understanding, at the time there was very little work around, and those so-called immigrants were not wanted or needed at the time. Unlike today, where we keep bringing legal and illegal immigrants in when we have a 7% unemployment rate. What happened back then is all in the past now. We need to forget about it. What is needed is a moratorium on all immigration until we can get Canadians back to work. And if that means keeping the rest of the world out, too bad. Stop living in the past. There are more things to worry about today then worry about what happened to immigrants in the past. It is not on my list of concerns. Quote

I don't remember them offering to pay back those monies when they bitch and whine about having to pay into equalization in more recent years. Quote

The federal government collects federal taxes and spends it on federal programs. Getting rid of equalization will do nothing to the federal tax rate. All it will do is ensure that those Maritimers working in the patch leave their ailing parents back home with below standard healthcare in their twilight years.
