I think we should dwell on what used to happen. It's what you would do if we were talking about another party or group.

Sorry, but it's the Conservatives who keep bringing up Chretien and living in the past.

The NDP in Alberta banned contributions tp poltical parties from both unions and corporations. Yesterday.

Oh, I see, you want us all to pretend it was in the spirit of 'improvements to democracy'. I get it. Let's all pretend that it wasn't done because the NDP doesn't get much in the way of corporate donations in AB, know that the level of union membership is low so that avenue of fundraising for themselves is limited, and that by doing this they starve their competition of a source of funds unavailable to them in any case. Should we be whispering?

And oh yeah unions nationally ARE big business that are also very secretive about what happens to their members money........Here is some more 'false narrative' about what big labour is up to to the tune of millions of bucks: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/unions-centre-left-interests-to-begin-ad-campaign-attacking-harpers-tories/article24924913/

So what's your point? You want union and corporate donations or don't you? The NDP provincially is the same party as the federal one. You can see exactly how they'll lead. I think most Canadians are on board with not allowing political contributions from corporations and unions. Why aren't you on board? Do you think businesses should be able to buy out our governments like they do in other countries?

With the federal election less than a year away I'm curious what are your thoughts as what topics will be a big political issue.

Possible topics:

Maple Leaf Web is now worth $720.00! Down over $1,500 in less than one year! Total fail of the moderation on this site! That reminds me, never ask Greg to be a business partner! NEVER!

Apparently you didn't see what I was doing there.

Apparently you didn't see what I was doing there.

Pushing your anti-indigenous garbage again and proclaiming we should ignore historical injustices because privileged people like you have the option cram your heads firmly up your asses to make those injustices go away; meanwhile the people living with them have no escape.

I was ignoring it because I have nothing constructive to say to you about it. You know I think your ideas are appalling and only make matters worse. But cool. Tell me again how you found a native woman off reserve to marry you and that she agrees with you that Indians are lazy scum that should just turn their backs on their culture and join "civilized" society. That justifies your beliefs and I should totally agree with you because of that.

I'm not surprised. My point is that your position is 100% hypocritical. Who cares what the NDP did last week. It still happened...at least, that would be a consistent position. Mis-characterizing my beliefs (I spent over $1000 sponsoring aboriginal cultural events last year - what have you done lately other than ivory tower talk?). I don't expect you to understand what actually happens to aboriginal people in real life. I do expect you to be consistent.

I agree with Michael Hardner - Most elections are fought on particular policies and laws. The incumbent rests on its record and the challengers state what laws they would change.

This is the first election that may pivot on the way policy and laws are made. How we decide to put into place those people who we want to govern us. I too would like to see a serious debate about the election process.

As to leadership, I believe we have deviated too far from our parliamentary democracy to allowing far too much power in the PMO. We do not elect a Prime Minister. We are supposed to be electing people to represent those in the area. These people then get together and appoint someone to lead them. I believe that Pierre Trudeau began the shift of power towards the PMO and it has been concentrating more and more with each subsequent PM. The leadership and decision making should not be concentrated on one person but on the expertise of a number of people - the Cabinet.

Note - For those expecting a response from Big Guy: I generally do not read or respond to posts longer then 300 words nor to parsed comments.

I would expand that to say I want to examine our democratic dialogue, outside of elections, as well as how parliament functions and communicates with Canadians. The system was designed when the Globe and Mail was just over 20 years old, and before radio, television, the web, and social media.

I believe that Pierre Trudeau began the shift of power towards the PMO and it has been concentrating more and more with each subsequent PM.

Yes, this is an evolution and we've been hearing it for years.

So what's your point?

That unions are no different than big business, and are in fact big businesses themselves- with their own agendas to benefit their members.

Like I said.

Duh.

Science too hard for you? Try religion!

Oh boy. You spent $1000 on aboriginal cultural events last year. That's great.

Tell us another rape joke, as you let us know how progressive you are.

Still think the Senate will not play an important part of election campaign?

Harper appointee Don Meredith tossed from caucus spells more bad news for Conservatives.

The Senate is now synonymous with corruption thanks to Harper's appointments and actions.

When the people have no tyrant, their public opinion becomes one.

And in this case, that's a real shame. Meridith was one of the very rare black activists in the GTA who spoke out against the Caribbean culture of Baby Moms with Many Fathers - the politically incorrect root of why there is a disproportionate amount of Black crime in the GTA.
