Harper is a Christian fundamentalist and he takes the bible seriously, too seriously IMO to entirely discount the effect of that on his decisions. Religion has and apparently long will be close to the heart of core issues causing so much grief.

Interesting question eyeball. Can a practicing Christian fundamentalist look at Muslim societies with objectivity?

Well, I really do think there are more than enough economic and geo-strategic reasons to doubt a lot of western objectivity towards Muslim societies to keep us occupied but...

I think a person's capacity for suspending disbelief when required by faith can become a habit. How can learning to not think critically ever be a good thing? When that faith includes a future element of prophecy that is desired, I fail to see why the faithful would do much to stop it from happening. What's in it for them?

I'm starting to get it:

over one-third of those Americans who support Israel report that they do so because they believe the Bible teaches that the Jews must possess their own country in the Holy Land before Jesus can return.

It has led EC's to align themselves with the most extremist and expansionist Israelis.

Also when the world ends, EC's believe that all Jews must repent and accept Christ as their saviour. I guess the EC's expect to get credit for that in the afterlife.

Jesus H Christ, Harper's policy toward Israel is based on him seeking 'the rapture' for himself, converting the heathen Jews!

How pathetic.

We let that man run the country?

It happens all the time, but when most followers are as deluded as the leaders they're following around what does pathetic even mean?

It's a miracle we've survived as long as we have as a species.

Netanyahu is coming to the USA to address Congress. It is reported that president Obama will NOT be meeting with him. I guess Obama has something better to do.

Update - The reason Obama gave for not meeting with Netanyahu was that the president does not meet with leaders who are in an election campaign so as not to appear to pick sides. It is reported Netanyahu was pi$$ed. Speaker John Boehner of the American Congress then decided to ask Netanyahu to speak to the Congress - breaking a whole bunch of protocol. Netanyahu accepted and will be speaking to Congress.

Apparently Obama and the White House are super pi$$ed. Obama phoned Netanyahu and expressed his great displeasure and Netanyahu gave him the political "bird".

Obama has been a reluctant apologist for many of Netanyahu's more outrageous move and I think Netanyahu has made a mistake. Obama still has two years as President. You don't thumb your nose at the President of the USA and come out a winner. It will be interesting to hear what Netanyahu tells the Congress in his speech and how Obama reacts to current and future Israeli "excursions" and move on the world stage.

I hope this causes the USA to review its relationship to Israel and look at other potential allies in the Middle East (like Iran). A Netanyahu Israel is no friend of the USA or of Canada. Time to cut this Israeli millstone from around our necks.

Iran was always America's most natural ally in the region.

The US decision to accept the British invitation to kill democracy and install a dictator there in 1953 will, I'm quite certain, be regarded by serious historical scholars as one of the greatest foreign policy blunders of the 20th century and the true beginning point of the widespread chaos and havoc that's now consuming the region and dominating global attention.

Actually, the USA is increasing support for Israel and the new Congress will sustain the relationship. Sanctions against Iran will continue.

Wishful thinking from Canada concerning American foreign policy is a wasted effort designed to influence Canada's ruling government's policies and actions. It would be much more effective to win domestic elections and influence Canadian policy.

Iran wan not a natural ally of America...Iran sought U.S. relations because of the The Great Game (British Empire [including Canada] & Russian Empire).

Well sure, like most people around the world Iranians still had good reason to believe the term Shining Beacon actually meant something.

The reality must have been every bit as shocking and painful as being bent over and raped by a priest, teacher or other symbol of inspiration, morality and hope.

But it probably didn't feel any different than being diddled by the British Empire...even with a royal condom.

People can believe whatever they want....how many Americans have emigrated to Iran ?

Yeah America would certainly knows how it feels to be diddled by them...but I think the condom broke judging by the infection you got.

I don't know, I guess Iran knows Americans have been to diddled up to be trusted. Maybe once time and reconciliation has had a chance to heal the wounds and quench the dysfunction. You can see this process unfolding in some First Nations that suffered similar mistreated in the usual suspects hands.

Maybe by then Cuba will be able to help mediate

I don't know....

I agree...you don't know. There are over 1,000,000 Palestinians and Iranians living in the USA, and about 2,000,000 Cubans or those of Cuban descent. They know more than you do.

us-will-not-take-floor-

GENEVA: The United States will not take the floor at the main U.N. human rights forum on Monday during the annual debate on violations committed in the Palestinian territories, a U.S. spokesman told Reuters.

The step, which is unprecedented at the 47-member state forum where Washington unfailingly defends Israel, follows signals that the Obama administration is undertaking a "reassessment" of relations with the Jewish state.

Get out. Obama reassessing relations with the Jewish state. You mean he doesn't support Israel? Get out.

Who the hell does support Israel these days?

Oh, right ... Harper.

'Nuff said.

The Palestinians appear to be more optimistic about their position in the UN.

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/palestinians-obama-told-netanyahu/story?id=29845638

The USA had been a knee-jerk supporter of Israel at the UN. The Palestinians now hope that the recent actions by Netanyahu and the support for Netanyahu by the Israelis have revealed their true position and direction in which Israel intends to go.

A Palestinian rep stated, "the whole shift in Israeli politics in recent years was fundamentally based on misconceptions, false presentations, a culture of fear exported to the Israeli people about the security issues. This current government succeeded in somehow selling what it sold to its own public to the rest of the world, especially the United Sates."

Last week, a White house spokesman said Netanyahu's statements "have consequences for actions that we take at the United Nations and other places".

I hope that one of those consequences is the United States support, or at least not actively oppose, a United Nations Security Council resolution defining Palestinian statehood, which it had previously opposed because it had believed Netanyahu's previous positions.

A Palestinian spokesman concluded with, "A UNSC resolution legislating the two-state solution would be an appropriate option to defend the two-state solution which enjoys a global consensus".

And this ...

/activist-admits-bds-effect-largely-psychological/Amplifying how the psychological effect impacts policy, Isacowitz looks at the example of South Africa.

The effect of the sports boycott on sports-mad South Africa in the Seventies and Eighties was devastating. For one of the worlds top two rugby teams, being unable to play international rugby was both hurtful and humiliating. Did it bring down apartheid? No. it didnt. But it certainly brought home the message that apartheid was beyond the pale and it promised a woeful future. Those are not the sort of things one finds in a spreadsheet, but their practical significance was enormous.

Isacowitz makes an important point, one that needs to be integrated into any effort to counter BDS. Its not enough to address the economic effects of a boycott; its vital to address the psychological effects as well, perhaps even more important.

Israel is experiencing the loss of business from European countries. More recently a French firm has pulled out of Jerusalem.

France-based utility giant Suez Environment said Wednesday it has decided not to take part in a cable car project linking west and east Jerusalem because of political sensitivities.

Very strange how that works. Your entourage has been talking about how the world has turned on Israel for years now on this board but it seems to be managing.

But hey, if McMaster students are boycotting Israel, its just a matter of time until it collapses.

I am surprised you didn't mention Concordia.

Lol.
