Ebola Patients Coming To North America

Recommended Posts

Yes yes, it's all about race (and gender). Sorry but I prefer to talk about the issues at hand rather than seeing the world through a pre-conceived notion of everything have to fit into a narrative of racism and sexism.

The reality is there has already been significant research on Ebola for many years. That's why experimental treatments like ZMapp were already available to try this time around... because research has been ongoing and has already received significant funding. Long before this outbreak and any hysteria about the potential spread of Ebola to the West.

Research is going on, even here in BC.

Yes. That's why AIDS was instantly cured after spreading to the "West". Also why cancer is a thing of the past, along with heart disease and stroke.

Your ridiculous tangent about white dudes aside, yes, it is likely Ebola will soon have a cure and/or vaccine, because it is a much easier disease to deal with medically.

I recollect that AIDS was not taken seriously until some white Canadian air attendant dude was labelled as "Patient 0" (rightly or wrongly). Then we wrote it off as some "gay" disease but when straight white dudes started to get it then money started pouring in.

No, its not all about race and gender. Its all about suddenly finding the money when people who have that money are threatened.

Your recollection, and previous racist assertion, are absurd.

So when a rich person feels threatened, he or she might spend some of their wealth to address the threat? Amazing!

Rich white folks paranoia isn' t all bad. Regardless of who comes up with a solution to this disease, Africa stands to gain the most.

Mustn't confuse them with the facts. The U.S. DoD has been investing in Ebola research to understand potential impacts on military personnel and use as a bio-terror weapon long before the current outbreak.

In 2010, the U.S. Department of Defense signed a $140 million contract with a company called Tekmira to develop a treatment for Ebola infections

I think that's a Canadian company isn't it?

I hope so. There are about 1,500,000 people in North America with AIDS, there is some treatment available but it is expensive and takes time and supervision. There are about 25,000,000 people in Africa with Aids. Not too many rich white people in that group. Perhaps the drugs available in North America will eventually be available to Africans.

Perhaps not.

HIV is cronic and incurable at this point so continuing treatment is very expensive. Cultural differences and education are the biggest obsticles in Africa. If a vaccine can be developed for Ebola, mass immunization could nearly iradicate the disease. The same could go for HIV should such a vaccine were ever developed. Edited by Wilber

Rich folks in the west develop vaccines. Without organizations (gov't, private companies and NGO) from the secular west, Africa would be much worse off in terms of disease prevention.

Now if they could only get the Catholic Church to stop spreading misinformation that kills people. And deal with the despotic regimes who care more about getting weapons to fight the next tribe over than feeding and caring for their own people.

I agree. The Catholic Church must accept much of the blame for problems in Africa. The Church stand on contraception goes directly against the possible solutions to many of the medical problems, overpopulation and poverty.

The two patients who came into the USA have been "cured" and released from hospital. A hospital spokesman said, "With the level of support available in this facility we were able to ..." Sounds promising. With some diseases, the blood of "cured" patients is used to create antibodies as a cure for other victims. Hope this is the case here.

It's probably good to keep the quotes around "cured" at least for a while. The doctor at this time, while appearing healthy and being allowed in the public, is advised not to have sex as there is a fear the virus could retreat to, and hide in, his sperm. Hopefully that will right itself in time.

U.S. 2

Ebola 0

 ever the chest-thumper!!! Oh wait... the drug Zmapp was administered to the 2 Americans while they were still resident in Africa. Oh wait... the drug Zmapp is a collaboration between a Canadian company, Defyryus Inc., an American company, Mapp Biopharmaceutical, the U.S. government and the Public Health Agency of Canada. Presuming the drug actually worked:

Collaboration 2

Ebola 0

hope reigns supreme that the drug Zmapp proves out... with no human trials for confirmation, there remains uncertainty particularly as the mortality rate for Ebola has actually dropped from its 90% heights to around 40-60% today.

The Ebola outbreak in Africa has become a very serious international issue. The USA is sending approx 3,000 expert troops into the region;

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/ebola/11100332/US-to-send-3000-troops-to-Ebola-hit-Liberia.html

While the United States can be criticized for its many excesses in military expeditions it is still one of the few nations that has the capability, expertise and personnel that can fight the spread of this disease. It does take courage to send your citizens into an area where contamination can easily lead to a death sentence. Kudos to the old USA!! :)

Yes...as you have stated several times....let the Americans sally forth and risk their lives for proud and honourable burials at Arlington.
