-TSS- Posted April 6, 2014 Report Posted April 6, 2014 There is an Irish website I frequently visit and since I don't seem to have ad-blocks on my iphone there's always this advertisement which comes: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/ I wonder does Canada really need to advertise itself to attract people to immigrate. After all Canada is 3/4 most wanted destination in the world depending whether it is more or less wanted than Australia. The UK and the USA are easily the top two. However, that site was very informative. I wish we in Europe, or at least in Finland, had sense to have similar immigration-policy as in Canada. Judging by that site, for example, I couldn't even dream of moving permanently to Canada. I am too old, I have no special skills that are needed, nobody of my family already lives in Canada, I have very limited ability to speak English or French. Quote

On Guard for Thee Posted April 6, 2014 Report Posted April 6, 2014 (edited) Ditto. I wouldn't even know where to begin, never mind Finnish. Unless of course ditto happens to be a Finnish word. OK, I'll stop with the groaners now. Edited April 6, 2014 by On Guard for Thee Quote
-TSS- Posted April 6, 2014 Author Report Posted April 6, 2014 Thanks for the compliments guys. I am a product of the Finnish school-system which once again was in the recent PISA-test the best in Europe. As for the issue, Canada is in a fortunate position that it can really choose the people it wants and reject the ones it doesn't want. Therefore the immigrants always tend to be of high quality and there is little reason to be anti-immigration. It's a bit different here on the old continent. Quote
overthere Posted April 6, 2014 Report Posted April 6, 2014 I wonder does Canada really need to advertise itself to attract people to immigrate Canada competes with many Western Countries for high quality immigrants- high quality being people with education and skills. Finland wants them too and probably does go after them, though you wouldn't see any ads for that in Finland of course. Canad also accepts many other immigrants with no skills on humanitarian grounds. We need breeders. So does Finland. Quote Science too hard for you? Try religion!

Well, there could be a variety of reasons. Personally, I'm in favour of advertising ourselves in places like Ireland, which are stuffed full of English speaking, college educated people who, because of the local economic circumstances, can't find jobs. But you didn't link to an ad, you linked to the government of Canada web site. It might be that the ad in question is from a private immigration outfit looking to make money by advising immigrants. Canada, the US and Australia have always sought immigrants. Traditionally, other nations have not done so. Europe gets a lot of refugees, but I don't believe other countries have big immigration systems like we do. Bryan Posted April 6, 2014 Report Posted April 6, 2014 His english is better than a lot of english Canadians! That too. I'm extremely jealous of people that learn to be efficient in multiple languages. I've been trying to learn Spanish for five years now, and it's very frustrating. I can order food, ask a few simple questions when shopping, but not much else. I'm screwed if someone actually wants a serious conversation. Quote

I cannot imagine why a country with a low native birth rate and a fat social contract- like Finland, like any Western Euirpoean country- would not seek high quality immigrants.
