I can just see the Koch bros. opening up their check books.

This is the sum total of your topic?

The Supreme Court ruling actually doesn't do what you say it does, but that would require a little more time and effort and digging through the details of the ruling. It actually allows individuals to give to the political parties again, which will have more control and transparency of the donors, instead of the way the current situation is. Which involves money going to super PACs.

Right...the court struck down aggregate donation limits, comparing such limits to telling publishers how many endorsements they could make.

...Again, liberals were on the losing end of a 5 to 4 decision that held that First Amendment rights trump efforts by government to limit the sway of wealthy donors or special-interest groups.

“There is no right more basic in our democracy than the right to participate in electing our political leaders,” Roberts wrote in the court’s main opinion. “We have made clear that Congress may not regulate contributions simply to reduce the amount of money in politics, or to restrict the political participation of some in order to enhance the relative influence of others.”

No, it means that nothing has changed with Superpacs, except the limit has been increased.

No, you're completely wrong. The limits were on donations to political parties.

What about the billionaire that is funding Keystone XL opposition? You against him too or only billionaires that you disagree with?

There was a 123,200 dollar limit for personal contributuions to politcal parties. That limit is now removed.

Yes, but there were no limits to PACs. Now that money will go directly to political parties, who will have much more control, as well as transparency.

I only disagree with a system that allows money to talk louder than people.

The first amdendment protects all speech, even the bad stuff.

The US Supreme Court just keeps making our constitution look better and better. Who'd a thunk it.

Yeah when I used the work "talk" I meant it more in the figurative sense than the literal. I'm not American so perhaps I'm out of line, but I reckon under this ruling the future looks very Republican down there. Not necessarily because of what the people want, but because of who has all the money. And that's not democracy to me. But then the Tea Party has already stated publicly the uS is not a democracy so perhaps they are right.

I think it makes our Supreme Court look better and better also. (Even without full representation from Quebec). Ours will actually stand up a government trying to mess with our constitution.

The U.S. is a constitutional republic with more speech rights than in Canada. Hope you don't mind if Americans decide how to run their campaign finance laws. Enjoy the free speech restrictions "north of the border".

Decide away. Let the money men roll in. I don't get the free speech reference, unless you are talking hate speech restrictions in Canada.

I like this statement. Solid.

Thanks. Actually first time I ever waded into the MLW pool to start up a new thread and more out of impulse than with a quiver of unassailable fact. Anyway I've never let naivete stop me before, so why start now? (I hope that stop/start so close together wasn't confusing.)

I think we have freer speech laws here: you can go to court and be heard in either of 2 official languages. Can't do that in the US can you?

Different topic...the U.S. government doesn't have any official (racist) language laws.
