Boges Posted March 25, 2014 Report Posted March 25, 2014 (edited) I don't reckon this will be terribly popular Miss Chow. http://www.thestar.com/news/city_hall/toronto2014election/2014/03/24/olivia_chow_would_cancel_scarborough_subway_but_keep_its_tax_hike.html The Toronto mayoral candidate said on CBC’s Metro Morning early Monday that her plan to kill the subway would “give us the fiscal room to build that relief line, to increase better bus service, to do the housing we need, to fix the housing that is now falling apart, TCHC.” The ambiguous phrase “fiscal room” — and her spokesman’s comment later that she will “reallocate funding for the Scarborough underground” to other priorities — appeared to suggest she would retain the 1.6 per cent tax hike intended to be dedicated to the subway, while abandoning the project itself. She would cancel the tax increase, she said emphatically. By “fiscal room,” she said, she meant that giving up the subway would give the council new flexibility to borrow if needed for other key investments, no longer saddled by hundreds of millions of dollars in subway-related debt that would push the city close to its self-imposed debt-payment ceiling of 15 per cent of property tax revenues. She said her tax hike would be “in line” with inflation. She would not, she said, impose an inflationary increase over and above the increase once intended for the Scarborough project. So "Fiscal Room" means that cancelling the Subway gives her the ability to raise taxes elsewhere? Edited March 25, 2014 by Boges Quote
Rue Posted March 25, 2014 Report Posted March 25, 2014 (edited) Shady. I hate Chow's politics, but she was a councillor for years where I lived (downtown Spadina, Chinatown). She staked her reputation on looking after the elderly, shut ins, mentally ill, poor.Never hid her left NDP opions. Very outspoken as to her socialist opinions. Never couched them and never was dependent on Layton. She was elected before him and was more powerful then him. If anything he leaned on her connections. She will run on that. In fact many were surprised when she moved to the federal level. I think she only went because Layton did and she followed him. She has a very lengthy left wing profile down town. She is actually depending on people who live downtown who are not necessarily trendy leftists to vote her in because regardless of her left wing leanings she looked after people in her riding no matter what their political leaning. Tory can only win if he can unite everyone against Chow in an anyone but Chow vote.To do that Ford has to be wiped off the map. Chow's handlers especially Kinsella know its in her best interests to keep Ford alive and syphoning votes from Tory so she can take advantage of the right of centre split to get elected. For Tory to win Ford has to blow up real good and it has to come down to a 2 way race between Tory and Chow. Chow might alienate some votes further on in the race when her real left wing ideology comes out of her mouth but its up to Tory to try appeal to all people worried about expenses and government spending and taxes and unify them. In the past he has shown while he is a principled and nice man, he lacks the killer punch. Some compare him to Joe Clark. Good man, but not ruthless enough. Its probably why I like him. He is a genuinely principled man. A genuine moderate centralist. Chow, she makes no bones about being a strong leftist. Kinsella's re-packaging her as a fiscal spend thrift is as silly Ford saying he has saved the city billions. Edited March 25, 2014 by Rue Quote

A move by Chow to cancel the, approved by council, decision to raise taxes to build a Subway instead of an LRT AND use language that would indicate that tax hikes will be made up by other projects might not be met with approval by the type of voters that initially voted for Ford in the first place. Sure I could be proven wrong, but we'll see. It's a nice bit if hindsight to say Smitherman was a junk candidate. I suppose you'd say the same about any politician that has the corruption associated with the McGuinty Liberals on their hand. At the time people were certainly getting behind him. Another thing, Any study from the Broadbent institute and/or Canadian Centre for Policy Alternative should be subject to a similar grain of salt as something from the Fraser Institute. Have any potential winners been left out? Which candidate(s) (if any) will this help?
