As if we really needed another example of just how out of touch BC's greedy, lazy teachers and their out of touch union is, on Sunday their school counterparts reached a deal with the government after five days of bargaining. No prearranged strike votes, no stomping of feet and holding of breaths, no holding children hostage. And what did they settle for? The same basic deal as is in the table for the whiny teachers right now. The CUPE members who are affected (about 34,000 of them) are the EA's, bus drivers and support workers who work side by side with the whiny teachers. In an absolute stroke of genius to pit union vs BCTF, each member of CUPE who has lost wages due to the whiny teachers rotating strikes was given an "employee support grant" to make up for lost wages.

Now, obviously, CUPE could have shown solidarity with the whiny teachers by holding off on this agreement, but they chose to poke the BCTF in the eye by signing now.

As I have said many times, public opinion about the whiny teachers is both irrelevant to the govt and near on impossible to gauge. Our young "teacher" friend Socialist has posted a poll from Ipsos Reid. So, let us compare that poll with the final poll done by that very company before the election here in BC last May.

Support teachers - 44%

Support govt - 31%

Other - 22%

Last May final poll done before May 14:

Support NDP - 45%

Support govt - 37%

Other - 18%

Actual election results:

NDP - 40%

Liberal - 44%

Other - 16%

As you can see, perceived "support" for the whiny teachers and the govt are pretty much in lockstep with the results of the final poll before the election. But, reality is a far different bird. So, once again, if you are the duly elected government and have three years left on your mandate, why do you care about public opinion polls that are inherently inaccurate?

And yet another poll in favor of BC teachers.

The BCTF will not be broken.

Thank a union.

Online polls like this are ridiculous buddy. Aside from the fact that you don't have anything even resembling a representative sample source, when people can actually SEEK the poll online and complete it (often multiple times from different devices), it's going to end up being skewed by the people who most want to influence the results. In this case, you have teachers basically bombing it with votes.

If you grabbed 1000 people off the street and made them answer that same question, you'd get a completely different result. As it stands, that poll is literally worthless and wouldn't hold up to any scrutiny whatsoever.

If you polled 1000 people, buddy, you would get a majority supporting the BCTF. Take a look at all the rallies and notice the photos showing massive support for teachers. All teachers want is A FAIR DEAL. They care about the kids. That's what they are fighting for; CLASS SIZE AND COMPOSITION.

Actually, if you knew anything, you'd know that comparing negotiations with CUPE to those with the BCTF are like comparing apples and oranges. FYI CUPE brothers are sisters are showing solidarity to the BCTF. Understand the facts before spewing nonsense.

I've been looking at photos of today's lockout and I was proud to see many children and students holding signs in support of teachers. Even they know who the bullies are.

Hey PCT, looks like the LRB ruling was affected by bias. What a surprise. You have nothing left.

Teachers vote overwhelmingly for escalation. Too bad PCT. You lose again. Do you understand what solidarity means? -_-

Maybe. I don't really follow BC news. All I know is that the polls you linked were almost literally 100% useless in terms of determining this.

As for teachers, I'm sure I'll offend you by saying this but I have literally no sympathy for you or the BC teachers union, just like I have zero sympathy for the Ontario ones. Teachers make well above-average salaries/benefits and the perks that go along with the job are second to none. Three months of holidays a year (don't even try pretend you use that time planning) is something most people can only dream of.

When you say all teachers want is "A FAIR DEAL," they don't have the kids' interests in mind. They're interested in $$$. That's why they're such a militant union. I was one of the kids that sat around at home for two weeks during the illegal 1997 Ontario teacher's strike, where the picketers were regularly booed and jeered and public opinion ran so hard against them that they simply gave up and went back to work after two weeks. That was two weeks of high school wasted for me.

As for class size and composition, you can blame your teacher's union for that. We'd have a lot more teachers and smaller class sizes if we weren't overpaying the teachers we have.

Where's PCT hiding? Looks like he finally realized he is on the wrong side here. Parents and the public overwhelmingly support the teachers. This has been well played by the BCTF bringing the issue of class size and composition to the forefront.

Strange that you still aren't able to produce a single poll that shows "overwhelming support" for teachers. The link you posted last shows 86% of teachers voted to strike. Note that does NOT say 86% of parents and the public.

It's self-confirming bias. He wants to believe it. He needs to believe it.

If there was a single little girl carrying a "Support the teachers" sign standing outside a closed school, that would be all the info he'd need to proclaim "Public and God overwhelmingly support the teachers."

Actually I've seen many photos of kids and parents holding signs, walking and supporting teachers. I've heard of many stories of students and parents bringing locked out teachers coffee and snacks. I've heard many stories of the number of honks and thumbs up passerbys have given the locked out teacher. Anyone who thinks the public is pleased with this assault on public education is delusional.

Neat testimonials. Too bad they're about as useful and tangible as a fart in the wind. Like I said though, you're only interested in information that supports your personal bias and position. You're a teacher and you're seeing what you want to see.

BC students opinion of the labour conflict:

BC students understand when neo-liberal policies are damaging their futures. They want public education to be corporate driven like in your USA, where public education has suffered at the hands of greedy corprortists.

I don't quite understand BC's weighing in on the teacher/government issues in British Columbia. Tell me I've gone to hell!

BC, tell me how you can possibly add value to this thread? Please, add some valuable substance to this very serious matter in our province.

No. I see reality. You don't understand what is happening.

You see a portion of reality - the parts that support your livelihood. It's pretty obvious you're not seeing the rest of it. You see the BC government's moves as a great injustice. The BC government sees it as a very fair, practical and pragmatic way to reduce expenses and something that will ultimately please future voters. Ask Mike Harris how going tough on teachers went over in Ontario in 1997. That was reality.
