bush_cheney2004 Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 Stupid is as stupid does. But only when it's Americans..... it would seem. But that is par for the course around here. Lastman was just joking: 3. "(There are) no homeless in North York." Spoken during his 1997 bid to become mayor of Toronto, a day before a homeless woman was found dead at a North York gas station. http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2009/07/10/five_controversial_quotes_from_mayor_mel_lastman.html Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

BC has returned, one presumes, as a nod to Canadian Thanksgiving ? Lastman was a special case - a one-time incident of Toronto's biggest and smartest city electing a mayor who was embarrassing. It would never happen again. Quote Click to learn why Climate Change is caused by HUMANS Michael Hardner

I disagree...it can happen again, even in Canada. The thought that it couldn't is even worse from a political and free speech perspective. That the "dead homeless person" was a woman fits nicely into this topic. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

jbg Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 (edited) This guy got elected in Canada: “What the hell do I want to go to a place like Mombasa? Snakes just scare the hell out of me. I’m sort of scared about going there, but the wife is really nervous. I just see myself in a pot of boiling water with all these natives dancing around me.” - Toronto Mayor Mel Lastman prior to departing for Kenya to promote Toronto’s 2008 Olympic bid. Or Parizeau saying that Quebeckers would be like "lobsters in a pot of boiling water" if the voted "oui" as he wanted them to on secession. The reason you are bringing Lastman into this seems to be the kind of knee-jerk "I MUST DEFEND AMERICA" attitude we've seen from you so often in the past. Lastman told an inapropriate joke but by and large, over a very long career he was an intelligent, moderate and capable politician. Bachman's behavior has been anything but. And while Lastman at no time believed there were cannibals in Kenya he'd run afoul of it's just as clear Bachmann actually believes the absurdities she spouts.I brought in Parizeau for the same reason. jbg Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 Bachmann is only a couple of steps away from believing that her toaster is telling her to do things. Hopefully she's off the House Committee on Tactical Intelligence before then.I burst out laughing when I read that. I really needed a good laugh after the year I've gone through. To make such a joke in the first place, one has to have some pretty ignorant ideas of what Mombasa is like. But yeah, his "this could never happen in Canada" isn't the 'I must defend' attitude that he accuses me of for simply pointing out that Canada does indeed elect stupid people too. No, not at all. This is obviously another example of his ignorance, but for some, ignorance that's not based on religion just isn't 'as bad.' Quote

bleeding heart Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 Ha! Just so. To be fair, here in Fredericton we can't really tell...because we've had the same Mayor for a hundred and eighty years. Quote “There is a limit to how much we can constantly say no to the political masters in Washington. All we had was Afghanistan to wave. On every other file we were offside. Eventually we came onside on Haiti, so we got another arrow in our quiver." --Bill Graham, Former Canadian Foreign Minister, 2007
