...and are about to wreck a beautiful park.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/story/2013/08/08/bc-rainbow-light-gathering.html

"The flora the fauna, the firewood, the toilet situation — there's absolutely no way this area can support the numbers they're looking at."

Meanwhile, B.C.'s Ministry of Environment is scrambling to deal with the onslaught of complaints it's received since the US-based group announced its plans yesterday. The ministry says it is "developing a compliance and enforcement plan."

The person quoted in the article is correct. It isn't a large area and there are no facilities for 1800 people.

Hopefully they close the park and escort these "hippies" back across the border.

Seems to be 2 divergent views on this:

  1. This is a ridiculous event by a band of destructive lemmings that leave a trail of destruction every where they go
  2. There probably won't be that many people and the group is used to treading lightly and ususally leaves sites in better condition than they found them

The "hippies" who planned to attend are from all over the world, including British Columbia.

ok... thanks Captain Obvious...

most of them will be from the USA, as that is where the group originates.

Is that why you want them to leave or is that why they're so-called wannabes?

No. There are 1800 of them that leave garbage and sewage all over a relatively pristine area.

Excellent news! The park is safe for those who want to actually enjoy it, not leave sewage and garbage behind.

Good news indeed. Hopefully they keep those lousy Occupy people out in the future as well.

Occupy in a remote park? What have you been smoking?

It seems they are out of luck.

It only seems like it. They are, as we speak, negotiating with the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation about using the Tla-o-qui-aht's tribal park in Clayoquot Sound.

I'm not concerned and in fact I support the Tla-o-qui-aht taking matters into their own hands and negotiating on their own behalf in their own un-ceded territories. Victoria obviously can't lead or follow so it's only right and proper that it should get out of the way.

That's fine. Will you help them clean up the mess as well. Victoria did lead. They acted to protect the park.

Yes but will they act where the the land the park is on and whose authority it's under is still under negotiation?

If the Tla-o-qui-aht or Victoria pay me to help clean up the park I will. I don't subscribe to volunteerism when it comes to maintaining or restoring the ecosystems our economy owes it's very existence too. These should be full time well paying jobs for a labour force that should be almost as large as the well paid workforce that's liquidating the planet.

And don't be surprised if Victoria pays the Tla-o-qui-aht if and when the time comes.

Why should Victoria? You don't think the organizers of the event or the participants should have any responsibilty?

Sure I think they should. I'm not saying Victoria should in this case but I won't be surprised if they do anyway. It seems to be the way governments roll, with money.

It appears the Tla-o-qui-aht didn't welcome these folks after all but the event seems to be unfolding with little impact beyond perturbing the usual suspects who can't abide rainbows, naked hippies, bongos or pot. No-trace-camping aficionados also seem to have their noses out of joint.
According to our local paper it sounds like these people cleaned up after themselves up island and they're maintaining that organizers will remain after the gathering is over to do the same here.
In the meantime, the beaches and waters I see everyday I'm at work are littered with plastic and junk that very few people seem to be worried about cleaning up. I'm betting its things like the pot and naked people that really has people riled up and all this concern about their impact to the environment is a bunch of poorly-disguised self-righteous holier-than-thou crap.
