Topaz
The Tories have done a rotten job in the ministry of transport and Cannon,2006-08 and Baird from 2008-10, are the minister that didn't do a very good looking after the railway. Soon after this accident happened, the news said that the feds knew about the hauling of dangerous substance but the rail and oil company said it couldn't afford to replace , so the feds allowed them, to keep the unsafe tankers. Again, not too many politicians are held accountable, especially THESE ones.
overthere
After 30 minutes when a problem is realized, fighter jets could be sent out to investigate. If the problem was in Canadian airspace we could send out a F-35 in 13 years, not 30 minutes.

waldo
I do find it convenient that anytime human error or negligence causes a disaster it's always a problem with funding. Transportation Minister Lisa Raitt says that the government will take the recommendations seriously. so you see no ties/association between the significant Harper Conservative cuts to Transport Canada and the number of inspectors, number of inspections, audits, etc.? You were just thumping your chest over a presumed balanced budget... cuts have real world consequences, hey! Of course, this is par for the course for the 'cut & slash' Harper Conservatives... it's all about the optics, about claiming no deficit... or evern a surplus... just in time for an election. Yes, those cuts to Transport Canada had a real world impact jeopardizing public safety and the environment. No biggee, hey Boges? . Also, quoting the Centre for Policy Alternatives draws about as much ire from me as if I quoted a Fraser Institute study to you. given the CCPA study findings closely match much of the Transportation Safety Board's report, you have little to nothing to whine about. In any case, you didn't address the quote specifics. Of course you didn't! .
waldo
Train derailments just never happened when the Liberals were in charge. I offered up stats on the increase in rail traffic versus the number of inspectors... a direct reflection on the Harper Conservative funding cuts to Tranport Canada. Your failed comment can't deflect from that reality of significant Harper Conservative funding cuts to Transport Canada over the last 5 years. overthere
This supports the need to cut back on rail transport of our precious natural resources and get on with building some pipelines. no need to rehire inspectors then.

But then you will need pipeline inspectors. Trains derail, and pipes leak/burst. Which one will result in less damage when an accident occurs?
