It's Good Friday and I didn't see anyone starting a Happy Easter thread so Happy Easter everyone. Keep up the good fight Betsy!

Apparently Betsy has been suspended. I can't imagine anyone actually making that their goal so it must have been an accident.

Happy Easter from an agnostic atheist with a day off.

Well thanks. Didn't know that betsy was suspended. We all have our crosses to bear, I guess. (A little Easter reference)

To those MLW members who observe such holidays as I do, Happy Easter. If all goes well, I'll be shopping for spring clothing on Easter Monday. I do hope all those public servants who are off work will join me and give the economy a much needed boost.

That wouldn't be Jesus getting you days off - that would be your government. On that note, I find it interesting that Easter is a federally recognized holiday is Oh-So-Secular Canada but not in the Crazily Christian United States. :P

Yes, religion has more legal status in Canada, the UK, the Scandinavian countries, and many other western democracies, than in the US. And yet the fact remains that religion is a more powerful political and cultural force in the United States than in any of those countries. Norway is among the most atheist nations on earth, yet up until last year they had an official state religion.

Conversely, the United States, the one western democracy where separation of church and state are enshrined in law, church attendance and religious belief are higher than other western democracies. It's the first-world nation where the most people believe in Biblical creation and the fewest people believe in scientific evolution. It's the one western democracy where a non-Christian couldn't possibly become the leader of the nation.

But enjoy your long weekend, whether it is federally recognized or not.

Oh, that's a "fact," is it? :D Odd that religion would have "more legal status" in countries where religion means so very little. In fact, religion plays a huge part regarding the qualifications of the head of state in the UK - and Canada. I know, I know. You claim that it doesn't mean anything as you claim it means oh-so-much in the U.S., and apparently that makes it a "fact."

What does church attendance have to do with the government? One cannot go to church if there's separation of church and state? And fyi, a "non-Christian" most definitely could "possibly" become leader of the nation. Your claim is your opinion; no more, no less. On the other hand, a Catholic could not become the head of state of the UK or Canada as the law stands. That's a fact.

But enjoy your long weekend, whether it is federally recognized or not.

No one that I know has a long Easter weekend. But enjoy your government sanctioned religious holiday in your country where religion means so little in your government. ;)

Yes, our hereditary figurehead can't be Catholic. This much is true. Since our head of state has no political influence in this country, that's not actually a response to my claim that

religion is a more powerful political and cultural force in the United States than in any of those countries.

If you're not aware of the strong entanglement between the Republican party and the religious right, or the resulting influence of the religious right on political discourse at the state and federal level, then I don't think there's any point talking further.

A non-Christian could, theoretically, become president of the United States, but almost every sane observer agrees it's not going to happen any time soon.

You don't have a long weekend? No wonder you're so grumpy today.

Gosh. I didn't realize that not seeing everything the way kimmy does = grumpy. Apparently I'm "grumpy" quite often. ;)

As for the "sane observers," that's just your opinion, too; a pretty lame attempt to add validity to your POV. For the record, not everyone who sees things differently from you is insane. (Guess posting that makes me super grumpy, eh? :D)

You see things in Canada from your POV, I see it from mine. Ditto regarding the U.S. - and your POV is not "fact."

Money is the only real religion in the US, and giving people the day off hurts the bottom line.

Holy "Girl With The Far-Away Eyes" or what??

I was drivin’ home early Sunday morning

Through Bakersfield,

Listening to gospel music on the coloured radio station,

And the preacher said: “You know you always have the lord by your side”

And I was so pleased to be informed of this

That I ran twenty red lights in his honour,

Thank you Jesus, thank you lord.
