It's stuff like this that make a good part of TROC annoyed with Quebec.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/story/2013/02/20/montreal-language-pasta-translation.html

Quebec's language watchdog is backtracking after demanding a chic Montreal Italian restaurant change its menu because Italian words such as "pasta" were too predominant.

The Office québécois de la langue française (OQLF) said it may have been over-zealous in its attempt to promote French language in public places.

"The office will consider this restaurant's particular situation while taking into account exceptions relating to foreign specialties," said the OQLF in a release late Wednesday.

Massimo Lecas, owner of Buonanotte said he was contacted by the OQLF on Valentine's Day.

He said he was told the menu contains too much Italian.

Lecas said he wants his menu to retain a certain Italian flavour, but he says authorities told him words such as botiglia, pasta and antipastoshould all have a French translation written next to them.

He said he was also instructed to translate the Italian words for meatball and calamari into French, even though the descriptions for each of those menu items are already in French.

Earlier in the day, Martin Bergeron, a spokesman for the OQLF, said the language watchdog is not splitting hairs.

Hey Chinese Food Restaurant Owner, There are too many non-French words in your menu. Could you change Won Ton and Kung Pow into comparable French words? Thanks!

Unflipping Believable!

Imagine this happening in English Canada? You can't call that Risotto! It's RICE GAWDAMNIT!!!

The ROC "hates Quebec"?

Speak for yourself.

What a disgusting, inflammatory thread title.

Yes, I agree, this language complaint is ridiculous.

That would be why they're backtracking.

So should you.

It's meant to be hyperbole. SHEESH!!!

Of course not everyone hates Quebec, but there is resentment that they try to protect their language to the point of serious discrimination. Stuff that would never be accepted in English Canada.

perhaps you should adjust your hyperbole... and your thread title - yes?

Quebec makes them selves a laughing stock. Don`t blame the messenger. Blame the over zelous racist language police. In a free country you should be allowed to put up a sign in any language on your business. If you want to advertise in Hebrew in an Italion area and go broke thats should be your business.

The Quebec nation seems to be off their rocker when it comes to language laws. They are overly strict in the use of them. Fanatical and zealotry certainly come to mind.

The owner must have some ties to the anglophone community to peeve off the inspectors. There is a restaurant in Montreal right off the Decarie, in fact you cannot miss it when driving alongside called "Pizza Tasty Food," no French translation at all. Use to live close by, apparently they serve Italian food. Wonder why they haven't been bothered yet? Anyways, this story made me laugh :D

The language laws in Quebec are laughable. Should have put a 'le' or a 'la' perhaps a 'les' in front of the work pasta.

Major corruption going around Montreal, Laval and other areas, and this is an appropriate and efficient use of public services?

There is an easy solution... tie the language laws of TROC to those of Quebec so when Quebec decides to marginalize the English language TROC does exactly the same thing to French speakers in their provinces, there does not need to be any actual change it might be enough just to suggest such a thing to see a change.

Understandably.

But you should also understand the competitive restaurant market in Montreal, and the nature of the city of Montréal, and then Québec - and finally, Canada - your country.

Lviv is a beautiful city in western Ukraine. It once had many Jews, Poles, Germans, and Ukrainians. In the past, it was known as Lemberg/Lvov/Lviv. Now, it is Lviv and only has Ukrainians. Nowadays, older Polish people visit Lviv to see where their parents lived. But Lviv still has a hospital with a Star of David on its cupola - just like Montreal has a Jewish General, down the street from the Oratory. (Nowadays, no Jew has any connection to Lviv's hospital; but Jews still live in Montreal.)

Why did Lemberg/Lvov change to unilingual Lviv, but Montréal is still also Montreal, a place where people of different languages, different religions, different beliefs, live together in peace.

Living in peace is the answer for everyone, everywhere. There is too much stress, tension and hatred going around that sometimes it's hard to breath properly without gasping for air. Our differences are what makes up the social fabric of Canada and sometimes it's messy, granted, but that's not a reason to stop living side by side. Through dialogue we can find the path that will lead us to true happiness.

Cities like Lemberg, Konigsberg, Malbork were once beautiful - they were civilized, multicultural, multilingual. Then, "progressive" fanatics like Stalin and Hitler - people who wanted to change the world - got involved and they destroyed the beauty.

I understand this progressive instinct.

For this reason, I'm a conservative. I prefer small steps rather than big leaps. I fear people who claim to want to change the world for the better.
