Black Dog Posted December 21, 2012 Report Posted December 21, 2012 The NRA wants a national database listing mentally ill people. I can't even. Quote

punked Posted December 21, 2012 Report Posted December 21, 2012 What is your point here? I seriously have no clue. Where I live a kid grabbed a pair of scissors off a teachers desk and stabbed another kid. So now you want those scissors to be a gun? That is not a solution. The solution to gun violence is NOT MORE GUNS. You think putting a fire out with gas is a good idea, have fun watching your country burn to the ground. Quote

She said the the idea of using armed teachers for security is ridiculous. My son who is an ERT member in our city's police force and who's wife teaches school, mirrored Assam's comments only he wasn't quite as civil. When he heard they want to used armed teachers for school security, he said, and this is a direct quote. "They're out of their fucking minds". In fact the right wing logic here sounds crazy when you reason it out on a higher level as well. "The second amendment is necessary to protect ourselves from jackbooted government thugs....... Now, would you please hire 100,000 new government employees, give them guns and station them in our schools?" What now? We need real solutions for a real problem. Not solutions the gun lobby throws up to make us think we are safer. America I think is waking up to this. The INTERNET is killing the conservative movement because they can't just repeat their crazy ideas over and over again with out challenge now. There is always a place to read a counter point. Quote
eyeball Posted December 21, 2012 Report Posted December 21, 2012 I think what the NRA is really proposing is that armed school guards be drawn from local citizens not government employees. I also wouldn't be surprised if this data-base for monitoring the mentally ill they're proposing would likewise be given over to some sort of neighbourhood watch committee to manage. Recall jbq's suggestion a few days ago that we keep an eye on the loners and misfits amongst us. Who better than some self-righteous offshoot of the NRA? Oh look, here comes a fiscal cliff. Popcorn anyone? Quote A government without public oversight is like a nuclear plant without lead shielding.
sharkman Posted December 21, 2012 Report Posted December 21, 2012 I heard a radio discussion this morning and it was suggested that retired cops could be the armed guards. I agree that arming teachers is stupid, but something has to be done, they said that there is 300 million guns in the US. Not sure if that is true, but more gun laws won't stop the carnage. I mean, go ahead and make all the new gun laws you want, but maybe get some ex-cop or army people in the schools too. Some kind of mental health check too like they apparently have in California. Four people have been shot dead in another US mass shooting - as the National Rifle Association held a press conference urging MORE gun ownership. Two men and a woman were killed and the suspected gunman also died while three police officers were injured in the horror this morning in Pennsylvania. -link Edited December 21, 2012 by Black Dog Quote

eyeball Posted December 21, 2012 Report Posted December 21, 2012 Some kind of mental health check too like they apparently have in California. Checking a new gun licence applicant's mental health record will do nothing to prevent mental illness from striking individuals later on down the road. Given that 20 - 25% of the population will suffer a mental illness in their lifetime pretty much insures that many gun owners will become mentally ill. Further to these are the other people living in the same house guns are stored. There are simply too many guns and too much mental illness to allow the status quo to continue - but that said there is the right of healthy normal people to enjoy the use of their guns to also consider. The only solution I see is to allow gun owners to store their guns at public armouries and the gun-clubs and shooting ranges they use them. The transporting of guns, like hunting rifles for example, could be tracked with GPS to help ensure they are used for their intended purpose. Smallc Posted December 21, 2012 Report Posted December 21, 2012 Meanwhile, the homicide rates in Canada went up 7% ..... Last year's increase was an aberration. It isn't the trend, and probably won't be repeated this year. Quote

I love how you double down on stupid at every opportunity. Don't ever change. Keep the mass shootings coming! Really? And what, exactly, are you basing that on? Um the data. the 7% hike follows a historic low. The rate for 2011 is still lower then the rates for 2008 and 2009. Quote
Guest American Woman Posted December 21, 2012 Report Posted December 21, 2012 Great so no gun problem here thanks to gun laws. Check mate. So the only homicides you are concerned about are those committed with a firearm? Because Canada's statistics actually support the other side of the argument - that taking away guns doesn't stop people from killing. Quote
