Hudson Jones Posted November 30, 2012 Author Report Posted November 30, 2012 Because Israel keeps expanding its borders? You mean this has nothing to do with "security"? That Israel's unwillingness to come to the negotiation table with real offers is because they know no one would accept their offers and so they could continue to use that as an excuse to buy more time to expand and annex Palestinian land? Quote When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. cybercoma Posted November 30, 2012 Report Posted November 30, 2012 Why, cybercoma? For one, if we want to be peacekeepers, we shouldn't be advocating. We especially shouldn't be threatening Palestine. Harper's Conservatives took all the exceptions that Canada's military is ill equipped to mean that we should have an active policing role in the world. Canada had been a diplomatic powerhouse at one point in time (ending after Pearson's era). Even today our Constitution (not the American Constitution as it had been in the past) is used as a model for new democracies. A "No" vote here was useless because the resolution was going to pass anyway. France, Spain, Portugal, and Italy were amongst the "Yes" votes. Harper should have simply abstained. They should not have voted "No" and Baird absolutely should not have issued veiled threats. Not even the US went that far. Disgusting. Quote
Evening Star Posted November 30, 2012 Report Posted November 30, 2012 Supporting a group that is peacefully trying to achieve self determination through the correct diplomatic channels is consistant with Canadian values. But even abstaining would have been better than supporting conflict and violence. Agree. Canada has never taken a neutral stance. Quote
Hudson Jones Posted November 30, 2012 Author Report Posted November 30, 2012 Israel to build 3,000 settler homes after UN vote Israel has authorised the construction of 3,000 more housing units in occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank, according to Israeli officials. It is also speeding up the processing of 1,000 planning permissions. The Palestinian Authority has said it will not return to peace talks without a freeze in settlement building. The decision comes a day after a vote at the UN General Assembly upgraded the Palestinians' status at the UN to that of non-member observer state. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-20552391 Quote When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. wyly Posted November 30, 2012 Report Posted November 30, 2012 We shouldn't be support or blocking this. We should have abstained. We should not be getting involved in this crap. we just made ourselves look like an american dependent/lackies...no significant country voted against the motion, we aligned ourselves with a few south pacific island nations dependent on US handouts and panama, a really impressive and influential group we put ourselves in... dre Posted November 30, 2012 Report Posted November 30, 2012 What did they expect for end-running Israel? Isreali had already increased settlement building rates before this happened. Its very clear tha Steve Harper wanted to AVOID just this recent development... Steve Harper knew this would happen and voted against this happening! Uhhh... this was already happening. This is the Likud platform and its unambiguously written in their constitution. They will never accept a palestinian state west of the Jordan river, and they claim to permanently keep all that land by settling it bit by bit. DogOnPorch Posted November 30, 2012 Report Posted November 30, 2012 Isreali had already increased settlement building rates before this happened. But this definately illustrates once and for all that Israel has absolutely no interest in peace. Not now I imagine. Fletch 27 Posted November 30, 2012 Report Posted November 30, 2012 Uhhh... this was already happening. No, It was halted UNITIL the yes vote.... This was approved overnight! Maybe check your facts JERUSALEM—Israel approved the construction of 3,000 homes in Jewish settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, a government official said Friday, in what appeared to be a defiant response to the Palestinians’ successful United Nations recognition bid. Please... your "commentary" anbd the facts are inverse... Seems Steve Haper was completely just in his no vote.. thats very clear now. Quote

DogOnPorch Posted November 30, 2012 Report Posted November 30, 2012 I guess I just dont find it as "interesting" as you do when families get killed. Of course you do or you'd be posting in 'What are you listening to?' rather than here. Do you think it can't happen or something? Surely the Palestinians wouldn't kill a pregnant woman in cold blood...or bash children's heads on rocks...right? Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.
Canuckistani Posted November 30, 2012 Report Posted November 30, 2012 Do you only have one eye? You have a very selective way of looking at things. Settlers don't kill Palestinians? IDF doesn't kill Palestinians to protect the settlers? What's wrong with you? Both sides are doing ugly things in an ugly battle. Israel needs to close the settlements and recognize Palestine before they can claim to be on the side of the angels. Quote
