Florida pastor Terry Jones had expected to enter Canada Thursday morning and participate in the event at the legislature in the early evening. But a staff member at his church said that he had been held more than three hours by repeated searches and questioning. “He believes that the border control is delaying him deliberately to prevent him getting to the event in Toronto in time,” said Fran Ingram, who has been getting text-message updates from Mr. Jones. She said that the border officers asked repeatedly about a provocative movie, The Innocence of Muslims, that spurred protests that left dozens dead. Mr. Jones helped promote the movie, argues it is “historically true” and had planned to defend it tonight. She said the guards also confiscated two signs, one which equated Islam with Nazism and one which had been erected at the Florida church to identify it as a Koran-burning site. Mr. Jones is now planning to speak in Toronto Friday, provided he is allowed into the country, leaving organizers of the Thursday evening debate to enlist one of their unidentified understudies. I'm hearing on the radio that the reason immigration is giving is that Jones says he's a doctor and there's no evidence that he is one. I don't support his views but he should have the right to say those things. There's no reason to not allow him into Canada. Sapp said the reason for refusing his entry was based on a disturbing the peace charge in Michigan, which she says was dropped. Sure but to deny him access because he may offend Muslims (or has offended them in the past) is pretty sketchy for a country is supposed to support Free Speech. I don't believe he's ever advocated violence against Muslims. The event he was meant to go to was a cross-faith discussion. Not just a Muslim hating jamboree. Doesn't mean it's not right to let him into a country. Again he's never advocated violence against anyone. His only real extreme action was burning a Quran. I don't think they denied him because he may offend Muslims per se. border agents primarily are concerned with the security of Canada and not letting people in who are a threat to the country's security. Even though it really wouldn't be Jones' fault, him entering Canada and speaking in Muslim-heavy Toronto has a significant likelihood of leading to violence and hence his presence is in a way a threat to the security for Canadians. This is probably the third or fourth post where you've said or implied that he was denied entry because of his political views. That's not why he was denied entry. If he banned others from having access to a Koran, he would be against freedom of speech. Simply burning a book he possesses is not anti-speech.
