TheNewTeddy Posted February 20, 2012 Report Posted February 20, 2012 I've only been "back" for a short while but I'm noting a pattern that longer threads tend to default into either pages of debate between two posters back and forth, or, personal attacks. I'm wondering if this is normal for these parts or if I've just rejoined at a "bad time" Quote Feel free to contact me outside the forums. MiddleClassCentrist Posted February 20, 2012 Report Posted February 20, 2012 Most sensible conversation has ended after 5 pages and degrades as the flow of discussion leaves the original topic. Usually because 1 or more posters are just trying win, rather than have a dicussion. Quote Ideology does not make good policy. Good policy comes from an analysis of options, comparison of options and selection of one option that works best in the current situation. This option is often a compromise between ideologies.
Argus Posted February 20, 2012 Report Posted February 20, 2012 Most sensible conversation has ended after 5 pages and degrades as the flow of discussion leaves the original topic. Usually because 1 or more posters are just trying win, rather than have a dicussion. That depends on the complexity of the argument and how many people are taking part. I've seen some topics go to ten pages on the first day. Where topics really degrade is when some individual picks on a minor part of what another is saying, and then totally derails the discussion to focus entirely on that point, which is often only barely relevant, if relevant at all. TheNewTeddy Posted February 20, 2012 Author Report Posted February 20, 2012 Its a political forum.. that is normal Personal insults are normal, as are mindless debates; but normally it's between more than just one poster and another. Usually it'll be between a group of posters, like for example... 1 Republican and 1 Democrat start arguging another Dem joins in 2 GOPers find the thread 1 Dem leaves 3 on 1 for a while, the Dem logs off The 3 GOPers finish up the discussion A Dem finds it a little later, starts it up again 4 other Dems post throughout the night The 3 GOPers find it the next morning.... Here it seems to be like Random person and Bush_Cheney start arguing the end I suppose I could join in to shake things up Quote Feel free to contact me outside the forums. olpfan1 Posted February 20, 2012 Report Posted February 20, 2012 Here it seems to be like Random person and Bush_Cheney start arguing the end I suppose I could join in to shake things up American Woman and Bush_Cheney usually argue when they feel their country was slighted, which is perfectly fine I used to go on politicalforum.com and had to stop because it was too hardcore back and forth sniping for me by republicans and democrat supporters Quote
cybercoma Posted February 21, 2012 Report Posted February 21, 2012 That depends on the complexity of the argument and how many people are taking part. Where topics really degrade is when some individual picks on a minor part of what another is saying, and then totally derails the discussion to focus entirely on that point, which is often only barely relevant, if relevant at all. This is exactly the problem. I've gotten caught up in this in the past and have probably perpetrated as well, but it kills threads and any sort of intelligent discussion. Quote

I've just resorted to putting him and other trolls like him (ie, CPCFTW) on ignore. Quote
TheNewTeddy Posted February 21, 2012 Author Report Posted February 21, 2012 I've not seen any trollish behaviour yet. I don't know if it's possible to put this as a technical law (something the forum would automatically do) but in many forum games (specially word games, like, add 3 more words to this "letter" to soandso) there are unofficial rules that you must wait for 2 other persons to post before you can post again. So it's like You Some guy Some other guy You Some guy again Some other guy again etc. Quote Feel free to contact me outside the forums. Add "TheNewTeddy" to Twitter, Facebook, or Hotmail to reach me!

MiddleClassCentrist Posted February 29, 2012 Report Posted February 29, 2012 I use the manage ignored users for internet trolls and the "no discussion, I'll beat on my chest louder than you can" posters. I might read maybe 10% of posts they make for interest. Like when someone blows out a troll/hyper-ideologue's argument. I like to try and predict how the unsavoury user would respond and then click "view post by" to check my answer. Turns it into a game instead of an annoyance. Shady Posted March 1, 2012 Report Posted March 1, 2012 I don't have anyone on ignore, because I'm not afraid of hearing other people's opinions. No matter how much I might disagree with them. I find only intellectually lazy people use the ignore feature. Quote
