So there is an election coming up in 2015, anyone have insights into how this one is going to play out?

Insights? It is only 3 years away. But they would loose their majority according to this poll in December... a few months have passed are people behind c-10, c-11 etc... or will all be well in 30 some months due to alchohol and mass brainwashing, and taxbreaks slated strategically in 2014? 4% GST anyone?

And I quote "I just don't know how it will come about."

That wasn't my question. Why would you even think that? How do you know that?

I'm thinking we'll see some Mulroney majority seat numbers for Harper. B)

I hope not. Those kinds of numbers require a "grand coalition" of parties that don't really agree on much. Remember, when Mulroney-era PC support fell apart, it went to both the Reform AND the Bloc.

Because I think it

Harper can call an election whenever he wants.. he might take an opportunity

or we could have a constitutional crisis

The GG might just call one

There could be a social conservativerevolt down the line

Or a big scandal

who knows

That is extremely unlikely given the current majority situation.

I would think it all depends on who the leaders of the NDP and Liberal party are and if the Tories are still doing the things that peeve Canadians off like now. Voters being voters, we do get tired of the party in power and vote them out.

You won't get an answer, Smallc. Some folks need reasons to believe something and some don't!

"Use the Force, Luke! Ignore that targeting computer that cost billions to develop and barrels of skull sweat to figure out how to make it! Just go with your feelings!"

Always FAR easier to feel than to think!

You would know best about that, you voted for the current government

Only by default. As I've said many times, I don't vote for any of the others because to my values they stink more than Harper's party!

Just because I don't like the CPC is no reason for me to embrace the NDP or the Liberals. Or the Greens.

I vote for who I feel is the least of all evils. I decided what is evil by using my head, NOT the Force!

What is your opinion on the idea of introducing fixed-term parliaments? I know it is easy to argue very convincingly for and against introducing fixed terms but especially in a country like Canada which is huge and has a federal form of government, as much predictability is needed as possible.

On the other hand, fixed-term parliaments is a recipe for a political stalemates. If there is a crisis which can not be solved by any other way than to call a new election then why should some fixed election dates be so holy as not to breach them?

Discussing now what the federal election might be like in 2015 is ridiculous. 3 years is a lifetime in politics. So many things will change, and change again before anyone casts a ballot. Regardless, if the economy is strong, Harper probably retains a majority, or at least a strong minority. If the economy is struggling like it has been over the last few months, he probably loses his majority, and quite possibly PM.

It's hilarious that people hate Harper so much they longingly look forward 3-years to when he'll face re-election again.

The 2 parties that have a realistic chance at beating the CPC don't have a leader. The Libs aren't even choosing their leader until sometime next year.

Any poll regarding the CPC's popularity at this point is beyond irrelevant.

How is that even possible given the Canadian system where the PM can call an election at any time? If the opposition does not even have a leader, the government really needs to be unpopular to lse the election.

If you don't like the choices, you could always spoil your ballot, rather than electing someone that doesn't have your interests in mind.

I've considered spoiling my ballot but that sort of thing always seemed to be more of a drama and an ego thing. After all, what possible difference would my one spoiled ballot make? Would anyone care that I, Wild Bill, spoiled my ballot because I didn't like the choices?

Frankly, I'm not so stuffed up about myself to ever do such a thing!

No, I'll continue as I have, accepting that in a real world there are rarely any perfect choices and that those choices are crafted to appeal to large numbers of my fellow citizens and not just ME!

I will endeavor every election to pick the best of a bad bunch, trusting that at least baby steps in a positive direction are better than giant leaps down a negative path.

Haven't you heard...Justin is going to be the Libs next saviour. Maybe this etheral 60% who I keep hearing about who didn't vote for the Conservatives in the last election will coalate into a vote for "anyone but the Conservatives". Of course, not sure where they will park their vote. Maybe the two left of centre opposition parties will unite...

If the two left parties unite then much of the centre will go to the CPC.

It'll be bad for the ROC because Quebec will hold all the cards again, where at least now a party can win a majority without broad support from Quebec.

Harper could pull a Chretien and call a snap election soon after the Libs elect their leader like Jean did to Stockwell Day.

Its understandable and a lot of other people do the same thing. Thats the negative thing about political parties and ideological monopolies. There should be multiple options for both conservative and liberal voters, otherwise parties will take their supporters for granted.

I question things because I am human. And call no one my father who's no closer than a stranger
