Topaz Posted January 23, 2012 Report Posted January 23, 2012 Again Harper made a promise to another group of Canadians, and again a promise broken. He said he would have a summit with the FN and now we have him there at the opening and then taking off for Switerland. Harper knew he had to go to Europe so why plan a summit if he knew about Europe? Harper NEVER planned to have anything to do with the summit and that's why we will probably have more problems with the FN and the blame in with the government. Harper also doesn't like First Ministers summits and its looking like Harper is only PM to give Western Canada the best opportunities, excluding the FN. http://ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs/canada-politics/first-nations-chiefs-angry-over-harper-decision-duck-213725372.html Quote
g_bambino Posted January 23, 2012 Report Posted January 23, 2012 (edited) Harper is not the government (despite the misnomer "Harper Government"!). It's so odd that people go on about democratic deficit while simultaneously treating the prime minister like an absolute monarch. Harper NEVER planned to have anything to do with the summit... Can you substantiate that with any actual evidence? Because the link you provided actually indicates otherwise. [ed.: c/e] Edited January 23, 2012 by g_bambino Quote

Because the link you provided actually indicates otherwise. [ed.: c/e] While he's not an absolute monarch, nor is he the government, whatever engagements he or his cabinet are involved in directly reflect the government. They represent the government in any of their official capacities, which is why they are and ought to be held to a different standard than Joe or Sue backbencher. For instance, in NB a cabinet minister attended a pro-life rally and there was hell to pay because indicated government endorsement of this rally. He said he was there personally, but it doesn't matter when you're a cabinet minister. It's perceived as the government's official position when they attend these things. Quote

So, why then the hooplah about Harper's "early" departure when there will be "around a dozen cabinet ministers" there, anyway? Quote

g_bambino Posted January 23, 2012 Report Posted January 23, 2012 Attawapiskat? I don't quite understand the direct relevance. Optics[?] I think that sadly is the only reason behind any issue that's made out of this. Quote
The_Squid Posted January 23, 2012 Report Posted January 23, 2012 Harper didn't "chicken out". He just has more important things than to meet with "those people"... Quote

fellowtraveller Posted January 23, 2012 Report Posted January 23, 2012 Harper is worse than Hitler. Word on the street is that he has to travel to Europe with a large security contingent to fend off being picked up and jailed by the International Crimninal Court for his many war crimes. Quote The government should do something.
waldo Posted January 23, 2012 Report Posted January 23, 2012 Word on the street is that he has to travel to Europe... no - word on the street was already covered earlier in this thread... see Harper's aversion to having his failure in canceling the Kelowna Accord surface directly in his "presence". ya, word on the street has Harper worried about attention being drawn to his past decision to scrap the Kelowna accord. capricorn Posted January 23, 2012 Report Posted January 23, 2012 (edited) Well then, by leaving after opening the meeting for an engagement abroad, Harper won't be able to use the thing as one giant photo-op. Not being able to play up this angle as the meeting progresses is a setback for anti-Harperites. Edited January 23, 2012 by capricorn Quote "We always want the best man to win an election. g_bambino Posted January 23, 2012 Report Posted January 23, 2012 Quite the collection of unsubstantiated theories flying around here. And only four or five posts in and Godwin's Law is already fulfilled. It's almost impressive. Quote
waldo Posted January 23, 2012 Report Posted January 23, 2012 Word on the street, aka, waldo's circle of leftwing blogs and bloggers. nope, sorry lol lil' buddy... see Globe & Mail, see Canadian Press After years of waiting for a formal process to replace the failed Kelowna Accord for fixing native poverty, the Assembly of First Nations says it is now receiving signals from the new Conservative government that the summit will indeed take place. g_bambino Posted January 23, 2012 Report Posted January 23, 2012 see Globe & Mail, see Canadian Press That doesn't substantiate your claim. Quote
waldo Posted January 23, 2012 Report Posted January 23, 2012 That doesn't substantiate your claim. I can lead you through the short-walk inference... if you'd like. Harper canned the Kelowna Accord; Harper is sensitive to the long-standing criticism over his decision to can the Kelowna Accord; Harper recognizes the meeting will most certainly channel back to his canning of the Kelowna Accord; Harper wishes to save face; Harper, effectively, skirts the meeting. ya, word on the street has Harper worried about attention being drawn to his past decision to scrap the Kelowna accord.
