olp1fan Posted December 14, 2011 Report Posted December 14, 2011 I think what rubs people the wrong way about sports like Figure Skating or Gymnastics is they are decided by subjective judges not an objective standard, like say points or time. some games are decides by the refs though .. in a way where one team gets all the penalties and the other doesn't Quote

An official in a team sport like Hockey's job is to make sure objective rules are followed not to determine the outcome. Why do we all know the name of Kerry Fraser is because he jobbed the Leafs in 1993. We're not supposed to notice refs in team sports. Edited December 14, 2011 by Boges Quote

Boges Posted December 11, 2014 Author Report Posted December 11, 2014 I'll ad to this thread instead of start a new one. DaFuq Lou Marsh committee! http://www.thestar.com/sports/amateur/2014/12/11/kaillie_humphries_wins_lou_marsh_trophy.html Olympic bobsled champion Kaillie Humphries is this year’s recipient of the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada’s outstanding athlete for 2014. The 29-year-old Humphries, who defended the gold medal she won at the Vancouver Olympics four years ago with another brilliant gold medal performance in Sochi last winter, was voted the 75th winner of the prestigious award. She finished ahead of a star-studded group of finalists that also included Los Angeles Kings and Canadian Olympic defenceman Drew Doughty, tennis stars Eugenie Bouchard and Milos Raonic, and Six Nations lacrosse phenom Johnny Powless. Humphries is the first bobsledder to ever win the Lou Marsh. Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish was last year’s winner. Humphries, who started out as an alpine ski racer but switched to bobsled at the age of 16 after breaking both legs, was also world champion in 2012 and 2013. She won Olympic gold in Sochi and Vancouver with brakeman Heather Moyse. You have a woman, in Eugenie Bouchard, who has done something this year that no Canadian Woman has EVER!!!! done. So because a Bobsled driver defends her title at the Olympics and tries to hack it with the men you give it to her? There's no comparison to Tennis when it comes to the competitive nature of women's sports. The fact that Humphries could repeat is a sad assessment of the that, fairly new, Olympics sport. If I was Genie, I'd be pissed. Well she's hot and rich so I guess she doesn't care too much. Quote

Boges Posted December 11, 2014 Author Report Posted December 11, 2014 Maybe Genie should, like, win something? She did win a tournament this year. But winning in the World Cup of women's bobsled is different then winning in the WTA tour. Making it the Wimbeldon is quite an accomplishment. Quote

Just because we suck in tennis for the last .....well forever , doesnt mean Genie should get the LM . You can bet she was up there in voting, and I would bet that many had the sentiment that when or if Genie finally wins something major she will be rewarded with the LM. Quote

Comparing Women's Bobsled to Women's Tennis is sort of like comparing Lacrosse to Soccer. Christine Sinclair won in 2012 for helping Canada finish 3rd in the Olympics in 2012. She won because she scored a hat trick and got robbed in the semi-finals and Canada winning a medal in Soccer of any kind is a big deal. Same with Tennis, it's way more relevant than Bobsled. Couple that with the way she played and endured what she did, case in point her injury and continued playing. Frankly she was a no brainer. Genie will get hers.....and more. Quote

Don't think any Canadian, man or woman has defended a gold medal in bobsled. A lot of Olympic athletes who aren't in big name pro sports live just above the poverty line so they can compete in their sport. I don't have a problem when one of them gets recognized for it. Boges Posted December 12, 2014 Author Report Posted December 12, 2014 It's more like comparing Glace Bay to Moose Jaw. None of it matters much to anybody. I'm a hardcore lifetime sports fan, but..... Though Europeans are pretty dominant in the sport now, Tennis is much wider played across the world than Bobsledding. Bobsledding is the fringe of fringe sports. Canadians care about as much about Tennis as they do Bobsled. It's one of those sports that only matter every 4 years, like figure skating, speed skating, luge and ski jumping. Tennis takes centre stage on sports networks 4 times a year at least and now that Canadians are in the top 10 in both men's and women's tennis Canadians will care more about the sport. In fact, other than Serena Williams, Canadians are doing much better at Tennis than Americans are. Quote

Boges Posted December 12, 2014 Author Report Posted December 12, 2014 (edited) Women's 2014 WTA rankings for tennis say otherwise. http://www.wtatennis.com/singles-rankings Beyond the Williams sisters, who are both in their 30's, the nearest Americans to the to the top are in the 30's. Other than Genie, there are few other top Canadians in the rankings but once the Williams sisters are gone, Genie might be the lone North American in the top 10 or 20. The situation for Americans is more dire on the men's size as the top American is 19 while Milos is in the top 10. http://m.atpworldtour.com/Rankings/Singles.aspx Edited December 12, 2014 by Boges Quote

Boges Posted December 12, 2014 Author Report Posted December 12, 2014 How does this translate into Canada actually doing better...right now. Are the rankings meaningless? Well considering how much resources are available to American Tennis players the fact that Genie and Milos are both in the Top 10 is a huge accomplishment for Canadian Tennis. Since Sampras, the US hasn't produced a single world class mens tennis star. And the top American women are both related to each other. Perhaps tennis just doesn't matter in the US anymore. But there are a lot of popular tournaments across the country as well as the last Major of the year. Canada has two tournaments that happen at the same time a few weeks before the US Open, that's it. Tennis never takes center stage. Coverage of tennis is just filler between major sports. It won't ever be cared more about than it is now, and that isn't much. It won't ever be cared more about than it is now, and that isn't much. It is as boring to watch live as it is on TV. Not sure if you were paying attention but during before the US Open TSN unveiled their 5 feeds and were showing matches on 3 or 4 of the feeds during the tournament. Other than the US Open, the matches are always on during the day so it's easy programming. During the summer what else other than the CFL and Baseball is there to care about anyway? Quote
bush_cheney2004 Posted December 12, 2014 Report Posted December 12, 2014 Well considering how much resources are available to American Tennis players Many international players train in the U.S. Have access to the same "resources". the fact that Genie and Milos are both in the Top 10 is a huge accomplishment for Canadian Tennis. Since Sampras, the US hasn't produced a single world class mens tennis star. And the top American women are both related to each other. How many slam titles have they won ? How much career money ? Perhaps tennis just doesn't matter in the US anymore. But there are a lot of popular tournaments across the country as well as the last Major of the year. Canada has two tournaments that happen at the same time a few weeks before the US Open, that's it. U.S. media devotes plenty of bandwidth to major international tournaments (Australian, French, U.S. Open & Wimbledon). I cannot name any in Canada from historical media exposure.
