It's just not that simple, I'm afraid. First off, Iran would not likely attack America. They would nuke Israel! One missile with a fair sized nuke and Israel is GONE! No retaliatory strike, no nuthin'! True, it would also decimate the Palestinians but since when has Iran or any other Arab country done anything significant for them anyway, except give them weapons to attack Israel.

Israel is small but it's not so small that one nuke would wipe it out. That is just crazy talk. It would take one for each population center of Israel, probably 10-15 nukes. That amount of nukeage is a whole lot of radiation that you're going to be sending out over the region ... a Muslim region that contains Iran's big allies, Hezbollah and Syria. Keep in mind Iran has been sending Shi'ite death squads into Syria to suppress the uprising there. Also, I doubt a nuke would knock out the Israeli nuclear retaliation ability. When Mordechai Vanunu defected he told of over a hundred nukes that were well protected and bunkerized.

Obviously you missed the point of BC 2004's post (not that I am his fan). But Grogy missed the point as well, and I rather usually agree with Grogy. The Russians were never after nuking Western Europe. The Russians are more likely conventional invaders. As the likely aggressors they would pick where and when to strike, or merely intimidate. Conventional defense would be impossibly expensive since that would mean having a broad and deep army the entir length of the re-positioned Iron Curtain (with Poland, Hungary, et. al. now on our side of it). The idea of nuclear arms is that if the Russians punched westward the West would respond with nukes.

The Russians, to quote opl1fan, are "pissing their pants" about that risk. Unless they can get the West to stand down, through anti-war movements, subversion, arms treaties and the like they are confined within their borders. That is not what a historical and habitual empire (going back to pre-Communist days) enjoys.

It's population has already declined by tens of millions in recent times, and they've lost all their best and brightest (what few were left after the purges in communist times) as immigrants to Western countries. It would do best to focus on its own economy and domestic situation rather than trying to clash swords with the US. With its arsenal of thousands of nuclear weapons, it is completely safe from foreign invasion and intervention. Russia should be happy with that and try to improve the lives of its people for a change.
