Chrétien promoting Rae as interim Liberal Leader

Seriously, Jean my man, step away, step away PLEASE!

Jean Chrétien is urging Liberals to support Toronto MP Bob Rae as interim leader of the decimated federal party.

Sources say the former prime minister has been phoning dozens of defeated and re-elected MPs since the Liberal party’s historic defeat in Monday’s election.

...

Some Liberals view the push to name Rae interim leader as a ploy to ensure he’ll become the permanent leader. He could gain such an unfair advantage in the interim post that prospective leadership rivals would simply bow out — a ploy used successfully by Ignatieff in 2008 to squeeze out his rivals, including Rae.

...

Nevertheless, some MPs privately say a backlash is developing to what some perceive as backroom machinations to install Rae, a former NDP premier of Ontario.

No Bob Rae. Ever. Nuh-uh, buh-bye.

I am sure Bob Rae is a nice guy, but this whole thing stinks. Again. Taint. Backroom politicking, same old bullshit. And it still smells.

Some MPs argued that Rae — or anyone else chosen for interim leader — should not be precluded from running for permanent leader. If the interim leader turned out to be a hit with Canadians, they said it would make little sense to force that person to bow out of a full blown leadership contest.

With Bob Rae anywhere near the LPC leadership, the only "hit" Canadians would be wondering about is what what is the bong they were smoking when they decided to do it.

The LPC needs to get younger and that means Jean Chretien needs to back off.

It's not about age, it's about continually reminding Canadians about a time of unbridled, shameless, bald-faced corruption. They should get a restraining order against that withered old fool.

Isn't that the death knell of his leadership aspirations? An interim leader isn't allowed to run, I thought.

The government can't give anything to anyone without having first taken it from someone else.

To play devil’s advocate, of the Liberals left standing, I’d think Rae is one of the few in caucus to have any real leadership experience. I think akin to the old PCs having old Joe Clark leading them. In both cases, neither is likely to become PM, but their “steady hand on the helm” was/might be what is needed in both cases.

Goodale would be my second choice.

I support Bob Rae 110% in his leadership bid and hope he is around in 4 years to contest an election with Harper or whomever runs. Bob could take that Liberal seat count into single digits without breaking a sweat.

Chretien is the new Mulroney, watching the decay and collapse of a political empire and taking no repsonsibility for his pivotal role in the dismemberment.

The government should do something.

I doubt Rae will be taking them that far (if made interim leader), more likely a couple of months until the've selected their new leader.

In 4 years Rae will be 67. Rae is going to get crushed in Ontario because of his dismal leadership of Ontario. Harper couldn't ask for a better situation for Canadian politics. The Tories will have hay day with Rae as leader. His numbers will be even lower then Ignatieffs.

The LPC still doesn't learn. It's amazing how arrogant these people are. Their party is nearly dead and they are still doing the same thing they've always done. They need to figure out what it is they stand for, the only thing thing they seem to stand for is power.

IF... Bob Rae were to become interim leader OR any other type of LPC leader THEN the LPC wouldn't have learned. However, this is just Chretien throwing his weight around and THAT is one of their problems.

And the the philosophy of 'stand for power' was roundly rejected by Liberals right across the country as they took their votes elsewhere or didn't even bother to show up to vote.

Keep in mind that at the last leadership convention, it was really between Rae and Ignatieff, there are a lot of Liberals that support Rae, and in my opinion, he is exactly the type of leader, backed by a solid platform, that this party needs.

You, like the LPC, have learned nothing from this election. It's getting to the point of insanity.

There is no such thing as a monolithic LPC that has "learned nothing" from this election.

Wrong. The party apparatus should have learned a great deal over the last couple of elections. Apparently they haven't. Electing Rae is just another Ignatieff, which was just another Dion. Eventually then need to stop the madness.

It is you who are wrong. It is pure fantasy to suggest that the grass roots of the party can launch a complete takeover of the top in four days. That dos not mean the grass roots has not learned. It just means that learning is only part of their problem.

Wouldn't Rae make a better INTERIM leader rather than the leader that takes them into the next election? He would have to sign a contract that says he not running for leadership and won't try and bring the NDP and Liberals together. I'm sure that they want some one from Quebec or connection to Quebec as leader but it's only less than 2 years and the Tories have their majority so there's nothing for the oppositions parties to do but sit back and get paid.

No one is suggesting that Rae be elected leader.

If there were real justice in this country the SOB would have been jailed for any number of crimes. And, to show my impartiality, Muldoon would be his cell-mate. These two are just more evidence of the political corruption that is endemic within Quebec.

Politicians protect one another otherwise Steve would have gone after these two just like any other criminal. Righting this seedy tradition would be one way Harper could improve government. The law should apply to everyone - equally.

Are there any allegations that Rae was corrupt? Or only Chretien?

When it came to Chretien, nothing was proven, and in fact, pretty much the opposite came to light.

It doesn't matter. What does matter is the optics. He was PM during the sponsorship scandal, money flowed from his gov't to Quebec ad companies while he was PM. That's all that counts. Either he knew about it or he was completely incompetent to not know about it.

Chretien is a left winger like Trudeau was and like Rae is. These people only ran for the Liberals because the NDP couldn't get elected to govern at the time. More arrogance and sense of entitlement from the Liberals. Nothing new here. Waiting for Blue Liberals like McCallum(the only 905 seat the Tories didn't win btw) to defect to the Tories.

I agree. A proof is a proof.

Another way to phrase it was that either he knew about it and was responsible or he didn't know about it and was irresponsible. Edited by jbg

Yep, the Lone Bureaucrat Theory, very popular amongst Liberals.. I blame everything on the Rogue Bureaucrat Chuck Guite, who randomly scanned the Montreal Yellow Pages and unilaterally decided to mail $200 million dollars to every second ad agency. Coincidentally, all those selected were Liberal-friendly and in Chretiens back yard, yet remarkably Jean Chretien remained completely unaware. Bad, bad Chuck. Edited by fellowtraveller
